* me slaps Cloudman around with a large trout * Sly 2 and Sly 3 are also fine games, although quite different from the first one. I can certainly appreciate what all three games tried to do.
The Sly series is great. The first one is just hardcore platforming (with shit vehicle minigames that should die die die) at its best. The second is more diversified and polished, which some people like and some don't. Still a damn fine game.
The third strays too far into the How Many Game Types Can You Stick In There territory for my taste, but it's a decent game if you pretend the other two didn't exist. It was the first game in the series I played and I loved it, but after playing the first one I couldn't go back to it. The purity of the first game's platforming addicted me.
N+ was the best platformer to come out last year. Yes, better than both Mario Galaxy & Ratchet & Clank PS3. There, I said it.
You are the worst kind of liar. It is a pretty fun game though.
The thing I loved about N+ was its purity. No plot, no filler, no hub levels. Just hundreds of wonderfully designed rooms with ever increasing challenges.
And yeah, the first Sly is a fantastic platformer. I've never tried the sequels though.
I enjoyed I-Ninja and Pitfall on the GameCube. Most 3D platformers aren't very fun for me because I end up comparing them to my experience with Super Mario 64 and they pretty much all come up lacking. It's funny that even this long after Mario 64 there aren't many 3D platformers that I think really come close. (Yes, Mario Galaxy is fantastic.)
For those suggesting Mario, I don't have a Wii, or DS.
Then get them already, jeez. You want platformers, get the system they're on. This isn't brain surgery or something. This is like buying a 360 and then complaining that there's no Zelda or Pokemon on it. And then opening a thread called "Are Zelda and Pokemon dead?"

Meh, I think this is nostalgia clouding your judgment, because Mario64 has been surpassed by many a game already, even back on the N64 itself with superior games like Banjo-Kazooie and -Tooie.
I just remembered. i was looking forward to playing Starcraft Ghost, but it looks like a Duke Nukem Forever situation.
Nah, Blizzard actually said they don't plan to release it, while DNF is "in developement" and will be out "when it's done". They even put a trailer with one one-liner!
Portal's more of a platformer than the new paper mario. Even if it is 1st person.

I've never played any of the Banjo games. I did try Jak and Daxter and it didn't do anything for me. Loved Sly Cooper, but that one had already been mentioned.
I'm currently playing Uncharted, I just got it today. It's really different, not what I was hoping for. The main character is annoying, and cliche.
I'm sorry, I'm extremely picky.
Uncharted has platforming elements, but is mostly a 3rd person, cover-based shooter. Which you would've quickly discovered had you just downloaded the demo from the PSN instead of buy/rent it
Maybe I'm not to broad-minded on genres, but I like how platformers give me a sense of total control over my environment.
It sounds more and more like you're just looking for more games in the franchises you like, rather than platformers.

Pure platformers are just boring for me. They weren't always but the past few years they just don't excite me. I enjoyed Galaxy but didn't care to do any of the extra levels or anything after I beat it. Jumping on shit gets old after doing it for like 20 years
I'm a huge platformer fan, and don't much care for Mario either. Shock and gasp. The only game in the series I've liked so far was the first Paper Mario, though there are a number I've not tried yet; I have high hopes for Galaxy once I get a chance to play it, it looks like fun (as long as I can tune out his voice).
also, slap whoever suggested super paper Mario, that is a TERRIBLE example of platforming.. what the hell!
What do you mean? Paper Mario 1 & 2 were RPGs but Super Paper Mario is a platformer.
yeah, but SPM's platforming is pathetic.
Yeah, I second that. And it wasn't very good as an RPG, with not much customization going on (I miss the level up bonuses that I could control).
it hurts even more when you think of how excellent the first two games were.
and yes, Mirror's Edge looks amazing.
Thirded, fourthed and fifthed for truth. Although I agree that the original comment was totally off-base. SPM isn't a terrible example of a platformer.
It is, however, an excellent example of a fucking terrible platformer.
I'd have to recommend uncharted, but by all means, get the demo first. It gives a good impression of the ratio of combat-platforming in the full game (which i'd put at around 70-30 in favour of shooty-shooty punchy-punchy). It needs to be stressed that the combat is excellent, though.
I never cared much for Mario, myself. I'd rather shoot/spin/attack an enemy rather than jump on it.
So if you like third-person action games so much, why do you care so much about the death of platformers?
Sonic, Duke Nukem, Jazz Jackrabbit, Commander Keen and others are action games now?
OP's "platformer" list is Jak & Daxter / Ratchet & Clank. The first J&D was a platformer, then Jak got captured and got injected with a healthy dose of Angst. The others are far less platformy than Portal, which despite being a first-person game and somehow dirty to the OP should be played regardless due to high amounts of Awesome.

R&C is 50/50. Playing Deadlock/Gladiator makes you realize just how big a part of the series the platforming is, because it was boring as all hell without it. But yes, Portal is platformy goodness and should be played by everyone.

Right, R&C uses the shooting to supplement the platforming. The first R&C game I played was actually Tools of Destruction on the PS3 and I was a little annoyed when my first 4-5 deaths were from falling, but then I realized "wait, of course, it's a platformer" and I got over it. Arguably MegaMan is a platformer, too. It seems like in most cases the difference is simply in the cause of death. Do I die because I miss jumps, or do I die because I was shot? Do I have to worry about touching any part of an enemy at any time, or do I only have to worry about avoiding their attacks/projectiles?
If you took out the pits in a Mario game you'd get a really boring game. No threat of falling to your death means that there's no reason to jump on platforms anyway.
But yeah, I'm still convinced that the OP just wants more Jak & Daxter and R&C games.

Well you could afford a PS3 so you also could've opted for a Wii and DS and even have money left over. Looks like you made the wrong choice, and are now paying the price for your stupidity. Better do some better research next time before you splurge on expensive items without thinking. You easily could've known you would need different systems for the games you want.

How the hell is Metal Slug "possibly" a platformer? It's far closer to pure platforming nirvana than most anything else not on a Nintendo console.

I have a Gamecube. But I don't have $250 to spend on a Wii.

I dunno, dude. Could it be because you're incredibly near sighted or something?
Or that the only system you own is a SEGA Beena?
I would just say eBay Tomba!! but since it requires the original Playstation that would defeat the purpose.
I said I got Gamecast, fool.
