I beat the game and never noticed the huge twist I kept reading about in reviews. People kept saying stuff like "one of the biggest twists in a game" or "the game has a huge twist" and so on.
So I beat the game but never noticed a twist of any sort. I kept expecting one but nothing ever hit me as an OMGWTFBBQ!!!on1oneoneo1!!!1 moment. Did I miss something?
I have no idea, but this review seems to think it's
In perhaps the dumbest plot twist since Billy Lee Black turned his own dad into a bullet while reciting NRA slogans, the big plot twist in the game is that the demons infesting the land are really aliens that killed other aliens that want Amaterasu’s help.
I beat the game when it first came out on the PS2 and thought the plot was pretty straightforward, except for the mystery about
who Waka was and what was the nature of his connection with Amaterasu.
I suppose the revelation that the priestess Rao was really a demon could have been a plot twist, although it's telegraphed so heavily in the game that only the most unaware could have possibly been caught by surprise.

Was she the whole time, or did she get kidnapped after you had already met her? I was under the impression she was the real deal to start with.

But i was pretty shocked to find...
Her mangled corpse in a cave later on
The new artbook out mentions that the real Rao has blue beads and no hair in her face. The evil Rao has red beads and her hair covering her one eye. I have not really checked this out in the game yet though. I'm pretty sure it was the Evil Rao the whole time.
Divine and evil beings like Amaterasu, Waka, and demons are just aliens.
That.... that's a joke right? Please tell me that that's just a joke.
it is not!
they're really implied to be "celestial beings" but it all comes out to aliens in the end
Actually this interpretation here quite frankly misses the point entirely; if you were to look at the legend of King Arthur in the same way, it's a story where some guy becomes king because some waif in a puddle handed him a longsword and said so. It's like a computer reading bedtime stories; far too literal and entirely lacking in spirit.
Ever wonder why people dance around in the air in Jet Li movies, such as Hero? It's not some modern invention, it's because the protagonists of some Chinese legends could quite simply fly and that's all there was to it. That's the way it was.
Same applies to the mythology Okami is based upon. The heavens are literally a place above Earth, and Japanese dieties are not really that far separated from people (heck the Imperial lineage was claimed to have direct divine ancestry). Since the last time anyone just walked into the sky was never, people rode storm clouds, flew, sailed ships over the horizon, etc.; it's still a "place" of sorts even if it's divine.
Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
...
Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.
...
Oh but if I went 'round sayin' I was Emperor, just because some moistened bint lobbed a sword at me, they'd put me away!!

that's kind of dumb.
If you've played Ocarina Of Time, you've played every 3d zelda ever.
Okami had enough that was different about it that I preferred it.
I, uh, didn't really care for Ocarina that much either.
I mean, what the fuck do you do after Link to the Past anyway?
what I was saying is they're all pretty similar
I expected that kind of shit from a JRPG but not a feudal Japan fairy tale. Fuck all writers.
That's... uh... what I'm saying to...
Don't make steal your beautiful aquamarine shoe, Kuribo.
oh alright
