Installing .NET 2.0 - It fucking won't

So I'm playing a bit of catch-up with some Windows updates and one of the stragglers is .NET 2.0. I download it, and during the install it just cancels out and says it failed to install. Nor is the Microsoft update page telling me why (or giving me the option to find out).
I've got .NET 1.1 installed at the moment (though I notice there's a 'SP1' update for it; tried that, same error as above) on Windows XP. Anyone have any idea what the haps are?
Edit - I tried uninstalling .NET 1.1 and this problem won't go away. Again, there's no error message. It simply says "Failed!" and takes me to a screen that says it didn't update. Their troubleshoot link leads me to advice from them saying to uninstall the .NET 2.0 beta, which I don't fucking have.
Did you download the .NET onto your computer, or are you using the Windows Download Service? Try downloading it to your local hard drive if you can. Sometimes that works for me.

I went through the Windows Update site. It's kept it downloaded in cache or whatever so I don't have to / can't redownload it through them. Where would I find a download that I can run without using their update service?
