Sad news everyone. I'm not sure what happened yet, but apparently the master of practical effects died last night.

No I don't.

Not to be a jerk, but CNN has nothing about this.

    Got a link handy?

And if it's true, this is a very sad day indeed.

Edit: Damn, Google is of far more help.

I'm not sure why CNN doesn't have something yet, but this sounds legit to me. AICN wouldn't post something like this without being 99% positive it's true.

Yeah, I wouldn't call AIC a paragon of journalism, but I see no reason for them to make this up (though I'm surprised they'd effectively have the scoop over everyone else).

Stan Winston and his crew made some of the most memorable monsters and creatures film saw for generations. He will be dearly missed.

As I saw on another forum (while perusing google for a citation); hopefully he's up there working with Henson on something wonderful.

    D:

The dinosaurs in Jurassic Park still look better than most of the CGI out there.

Somewhere up there, someone's walking him over to the weather controls.

    Uwe Boll? :winky:

This sucks though didn't he do the stuff for The Thing? That's still the best looking movie I've ever seen.

I keep worrying that we may lose John Williams soon, he's 76. But he's still doing great work.

No, he's not. He's rehashing the same shit he wrote umpteen years ago. All of his pieces sound the same; good, but the same.

It's because they used models when they should have, and limited the full CGI to fast and low-light scenes. The problem with CGI as it's being used currently isn't an issue with the technology, it's an issue with discretion and knowing that there are other tricks in the bag as well.

I just forgot his name, but we lost a really old sportscaster last week. Was the one that broke the news about the Israeli hostages at the Olympics back in the 70s I think.

edit: the guy i was thinking of was Jim McKay
