Body Twitching

As i type this i am in bed next to my boyfriend, and as usual his body twitches while he is asleep every few minutes. anyone ever startled a cat and seen the cat's reaction? his body does that, all night, every night.

anyone know why he does this? anyone do something/see something similar? anyone know maybe how to help fix it?

he is 21 years old, active, in good shape and is taking no medication. he snores sometimes, but only lightly, and only if he is on his back. he also sleep talks, but i have no idea if that is related in any way.

he doesn't feel tired or sore when he wakes up or anything so he hasn't gone to see a doctor about it, but i was wondering if maybe he should look into that? he didn't even know he did it till i told him he did

It's completely normal. Happens to most people right as they're falling asleep, but for some it can happen all night.

Hypnic Jerk is what it's called, according to wikipedia.

My husband does much the same when he sleeps, and is also active. It's pretty normal, even if it is a little unsettling sleeping next to that person. Fortunately he doesn't do it constantly, just every once in a while... which can be a little odd when cuddling. >.>

i'm glad to hear that it most likely isn't something serious at least.

but man, they vary from small twitches to full body spasms, every few minutes

I do this on and off when I am falling asleep. I'll usually start to drift into a dream where I am running or rollerskating or doing gymnastics or something, and then I'll fall down in my dream and have a very obnoxious twitch (waking myself up) in real life.

It really pissed my girlfriend off for a while. Our solution was to purchase a bigger bed.

This could be the result of muscle contraction, it is normal in young people who do a lot of workout. Have you considered asking him if you do the same while asleep?, it would be interesting to know if this is just a man thing :P

I had a girlfriend who did this, and it made me realise that I do it too. Its a pretty strange thing, but sleep is pretty odd overall so it never worried me.

I do this periodically through the night, mostly right as I fall asleep, which can sometimes wake me back up.

My GF finds it mildly annoying but has learned to live with yet.
