We love advertising.. apparently

I'm not sure on how I feel about this but according to the article a survey carried out by IGA says we love in-game ads. Now it's obvious that the survey itself is a load of monkey spit but companies like Sony are obviously taking these things to heart.

We all knew this stuff was coming to some games but we may be seeing it in seriously large quantities, at least on PS3 games and probably 360 games too. Because of resource issues (memory limitations, storage limitations) we likely won't see this kind of stuff on the Wii (excluding advertising that has been built into the game itself).

I personally hate in-game advertising with a passion. Certainly I accept these companies need to make money to offset the actual costs of making the game, but generally isn't that whole what the buying the game with money thing is for?

We saw this stuff coming to pc games, but with the increased storage capacity and so forth of consoles it looks like we'll probably be seeing it even more there. Think about it, it's practically a captive audience.

On the pc we can patch out or tweak the games to disable the horrendous advertising, what can we do on the consoles? Block it at the firewall/router level, then all they'd need to do is perhaps integrate it as part of say xbox live so if you block that ip address for advertising you also block out your capability to log onto live.

I see dark times ahead.

UPDATE:

Sony has confirmed it's going to start advertising in as yet to be specified games.

An already existing soda machine in the newsroom in CoD4 is now Pepsi/Coke = fine.

In games where it makes some sense, like racing/sports, it doesn't annoy me.

Marching through a war-torn landscape, without a single intact building, and seeing a billboard for the latest episode of some stupid tv show? That would piss me off to no end.

For me, it's all about context.

    I don't give a shit about in-game ads unless it's ridiculously obtrusive.

I have seen no-one at all complaining about Snake's iPod, for example. If the next Smash Brothers tells me to enjoy a refreshing Coke then I'm also not going to care.

Falcon - your second example has never happened and will never happen, and people need to stop touting it as an anti-in-game-ad thing.

I've got slightly less objection to advertising when it's used to subsidize development, but I have the feeling that the purpose of this is to generate an ancillary revenue stream, which is a hard sell to me when the platforms doing it have pushed the software price point to $60.

Yeah, but that's something that's been integrated into the game itself and to be honest I don't think anyone minds it. Konami wanted a way for you to changed music and listen to podcast like content in-game, they had the idea of using an ipod, Apple liked the idea and so it was born.

That kind of stuff I can accept, it's just the kind of advertising that IGA does that I object heavily to. In other words billboards of advertising crap all over in-game.

I haven't actually played any games with ads in them, but most examples I've seen have not been something that would have annoyed me.

Around the time that Battlefield 2142 was released I remember that a lot of people were bitching about advertising in that, but that was because people thought malware was installed on their computers and not because of the ads themselves.

For the ads themselves in that game, I have seen some and there is both good and bad:

What happened with that Battlefield set in the future? You know, 100 years in the war-torn future and there were intact billboards for current-day ads.

    Yes, that happened.

Then again, similar things haven't happened in huge numbers yet.

    Exactly.

What's happened here is that when games started using advertising, gamers were 'hells no!' and listed when it would be acceptable, and when it wasn't. And the advertisers took that on board, and did it properly. And gamers didn't notice and carried on attacking their invisible strawman.

Since this is apparently a way to recoup dev costs, I'd be glad if they passed along some of the savings to the player.

Of course, the even worse alternative is that they are passing on some of the savings to the player and we still get USD 60 games.

    It had Kiwi shoe polish.

Fucking shoe polish. The company would probably have NEVER advertised in a video game if it weren't for the fact that it made sense to have it as a small object that could be dug up.

Now that's how you do ads right and make them fit the theme.

Edit: MGS4's product placement seems sound too, just so long as they don't go out of their way to obsess about it.

Seeing products or ads in places where I'd naturally expect them (like race tracks) is just fine. I expect to see stickers all over race cars because that's exactly how they are in real life.

But stupid billboards that look brand new in a war-torn battlefield (like those Battlefield screenshots on the first page)? No. Hell, you could keep the billboards even, just decay them a bit, make it look like they've been sitting there a while.

Problem is, EA's reach is getting longer and longer. Would it break the immersion if you had to equip the Durex Ultra-Thin before Shepard boinks a blue alien, lest you catch interstellar herpes? Maybe you'll need the Numbing Agent too if you haven't got a high enough stamina score.
