Verizon drops the hatchet on alt.* newsgroups.

Dear Verizon Online Customer,

As a Verizon Newsgroup service user, we wanted to let you know about some important changes that we will soon be making to our Newsgroup service.

On June 24, 2008, we will be modifying our Newsgroup offerings to only offer groups in the Big-8 Newsgroup hierarchies, which are listed below. The 0.verizon.* newsgroup hierarchy will also continue to be available. Users will not be able to post or download from any other newsgroups using our Newsgroup service.

comp.*
humanities.*
misc.*
news.*
rec.*
sci.*
soc.*
talk.*

More details regarding the Big 8 newsgroup hierarchies is available at: http://www.big-8.org/.

This change will not affect your Internet access service. If you would like to subscribe to newsgroups other than those we offer, you will need to subscribe to a separate commercial news service. Please note that your use of any such service is still subject to our Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.

I wonder how the world will take this...

I KISS YOU!

I would guess the only 2 things people use newsgroups for nowadays are porn and warez.

On the flip side, both of those are far more easier to aquire nowadays as well, especially with the advent of the torrent system.

I believe I read that this was a response to child pornography, or at least that was the initial reason, and it's probably an easy way to save money on something that few use for any legal purpose.

I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this. On one hand, I can understand that newsgroups are probably a dying communication method, these days, with things like blogs, message boards, chat rooms, etc. becoming much more fashionable. On the other hand, Verizon is keeping other newsgroups around, and I'm guessing they're a lot less popular than the alt.* stuff. On the gripping hand, most of alt.* has been filled with spam and "less desirable" material (porn, warez, etc.) so that's less of a headache for any ISP to have to manage.

Most people who use this part of the internet frequently usually use the specialized usenet services because of their better retention.

And knowing what kind of content lurks there, I'm not shocked that Verizon axed it.

This. Many ISP's here in Sweden cut off Usenet access years ago. Yes, all of it, not just branches of groups.

Get a newgroup miner. Xnews works decently well. Set up your login info for that newsgroup through your ISP. Download away.

Er, sorry. I am perhaps mis-reading the rules or not reading the proper rules, but I had believed that my answer was specific enough to the discussion (and didn't go into any sort of "how-to" or encouragement territory). If I should remove that direct reference from my post, I'll happily do so.

I used to use newsgroups back in the day (circa '99-00) before porn was available in vast quantities on the web and before self-created forums because so easy/abundant.

Really web forums made the usenet ascii obsolete and although I'm sure there's good stuff at fast speeds available on the binary side, I always had problems with missing chunks most of the time. I don't know if larger files eventually stopped getting split up, but you used to have to download pieces from a bunch of messages then combine them, and there would always be a few missing from my end.

Yeah, but they always provide the redundancy files so you can patch up the holes.

This is weak, newsgroups were still how I got most of my anime without having to goof around with port forwarding and IP blocking and all the other stupid nonsense that comes with torrents. I remember getting some mixtapes off there that I haven't seen elsewhere as well. I'll probably end up cancelling my Verizon DSL and switching to cable (not just on this, but it's one of many issues) and switch to cable, at least until FIOS comes to town.

Ya, Something did need to be done. Blanket approach? Probably overzealous, But does it cure a serious problem? I would like to think it does. I knew the newsgroups couldn't maintain its status for long. Fuck'em I say. That stuff is gross and people should have their balls ripped off for looking at that illegal stuff. Child pornography is just wrong.

I'll be the first to admit there is a lot of unsavory content on usenet. However, that is also true of the internet at large. I don't think that "The internet has *gasp* ...porn?!: shut it down!" is the proper way to handle the situation, and I don't think that is the solution for usenet either.

There is a wealth of information and content besides porn and warez, the more obscure and hard to find the better. It can serve as a great supplement to the mainstream internet.
