I was really hoping they would have fixed this in v.3 final. If I open chatzilla, or have the download manager up, or really anything attached to firefox, then close the browser, there really is no way to reopen the browser without closing chatzilla or dl manager or whatever. That is really inconvenient if you are in the middle of an interesting discussion in IRC. They really need to fix that. (I am just going by the version of OSX I have, which is 10.4)

Grrr, tell me about it. Lewie put v.3 on my PC this afternoon, and i haven't been able to upload pics/links all afternoon, he's only just managed to fix it.

I changed the title to this thread to make it about Firefox 3 in general, as we don't seem to have a thread on the topic just yet. I'd like to hear how the new firefox is running for everybody. I'd like to make the switch, but I'd also like it to not suck.
One of my favorite features, where when you close firefox it'll save all your tabs and have them all up when you open up firefox again, does not work for me with Firefox 3 :(:(
edit: Okay it works if I go file>exit, but not clicking X in top right corner...

That is the best feature of Firefox, and for whatever reason that stopped working in Firefox 2 on Kubutu for me months ago. It's one of the features I hope will work when I upgrade.

Have you configured Firefox to preserve your session? Open Preferences -> Main -> Startup -> When Firefox starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time

For that session restore feature; it actually works great in FF3 and remembers your back buttons too. It's just that, if you upgraded (like I know a bunch of you did) with extensions that have been auto-disabled, the restore feature can be kinda killed dead. MozDev says it's an extension thing, not a FF bug, which is dev-speak for "STFU n00b" as far as I can tell.
To fix this is easy though:
Open "about:config" and change "browser.sessionstore.enable" to "true" and re-start (may require two restarts).
Have you configured Firefox to preserve your session? Open Preferences -> Main -> Startup -> When Firefox starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time
Yeah it carried over from the old Firefox, and I changed it, saved, exited, opened FF again and set it up again and closed. Still no go with exiting with the X.

My bookmarks are gone. I have the backup bookmarks HTML file, how do I get these into Firefox 3?
Go to:
Bookmarks|Organise Bookmarks... -> Import and Backup|Import HTML... -> From an HTML file...
and select the file you want and hit OK.
(Ctr+Shift+B opens the bookmark organiser too)

Check out Foxmarks for future use. Basically it stores your bookmarks and then if/when you change to a new computer it will sync all your BM. Its awesome and I use it all the time.
I've been using FF3 since beta 3 and I've had nothing but goodness. Fast, more efficient and I love the awesome bar, although it did take me a while to get used to it.
I'm just getting settled into Firefox 3. Runs great. Shame about some of my extensions, but that's only a matter of time.
I'm actually interested quite a lot in modifying FF to get rid of certain features, change the behaviour of others, etc. If anyone wants to do something to their Firefox in this vein, mention it and I might be able to help you.
Edit: Personally I want to be able to disable the Live Bookmark icon that appears in the address bar. I know it must be possible. I've already disabled the Go button and the Bookmark star.

Try creating a clean profile, then see if it works.
How would I go about that?
There are two ways:
1. Create/copy a shortcut of Firefox, in the target field for the properties of the shortcut add " -P" (or " -profilemanager") to the end.
This will launch the profile where you can rename/delete the old profile and create a new one.
2. Completely delete the Mozilla directories from your user directory.
For example on an XP install delete:
C:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\mozilla
C:\documents and settings\%username%\local settings\application data\mozilla
If this is on something other than windows xp let me know and I can correct the locations etc.
You should only do the second one if you want to do a complete clean out of everything, when Firefox first launches it will create new mozilla directories. Before doing either you should make a backup of your bookmarks and passwords.
Firefox/Mozilla has been slightly flaky in the past with importing older version profiles so performing number two might be advisable.

I haven't hit any bugs. All my extensions worked. My theme needed an update, but it found and installed it automatically. Wikipedia is a built-in search engine now! I love the page icon on the left of the address field, with clickable crypto info. I also like the smart address bar dropdown. I'll probably get used to the new bookmark manager.
Basically, so far, I'm quite impressed. But not surpised. I've been using this browser since it was called Phoenix. These guys really know what they're doing.
edit: OMFG you can do smart dropdowns in the search engine, too, you have to enable it with "Manage Search Engines". Awesome!

Should be C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Mozilla Firefox and C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla Firefox. The version of the second address that works for both XP and Vista is %AppData%\Mozilla Firefox.

Minor correction.
That's C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Mozilla and C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla
Bit surprising frankly that they haven't changed the directory name to Firefox or Mozilla Firefox. Guess it's a left over from the old days.

Ah, thanks. That's a good point - Thunderbird hasn't had its profile directories stored there for ages and the only other app I know of that stores its profiles there is SeaMonkey. Likewise on Linux (presumably OSX, too) - it's ~/.mozilla. Weird.
Okay I figured out the problem. I have FF3 set to clear all history/private data on exit, and if it clears browsing history it won't load the tabs from last time. FF2 wasn't like this though.
I used FF2 for a long time, and had been using Firefox for a while before switching to OS X. I finally had enough with the ass-dragging slowness of FF on OS X and switched to Safari a few months back. FF3 gave me some hope, so I installed it.
Whoops!
After the initial install and run, which I expected to be slow, I was greeted with one of the ugliest UIs I had ever seen. What the hell were the Firefox folks thinking pushing that monstrosity out for the OS X theme? It doesn't look like anything I've seen on OS X cohesively. I quit it and opened it to check the launch speed... and it didn't change.
Swing and a miss, Mozilla. I'm sure there are some folks that like Firefox but it's not me.

That was the only thing I was missing in 3. I found that dev build as well. I still do not understand why something like this was not integrated into 3.
Version 3 beta 5 came in this Ubuntu install and I have since updated to 3.0. I have had no problems what so ever. 8-)
My friend has an old Power Book and has been complaining about the compatibility with Shape Shifter. I'm sure that should be worked out soon though.
the only thing i'm missing in Firefox 3 is the ability to use my scroll wheel to switch through tabs. Tab mix plus allowed me to do this, but of course that extension doesn't work for the new Firefox.
otherwise, Firefox loads much faster for me and renders pages much more quickly for me. i'm surprised to see a software improvement on my Vista machine.

anyone having issues with memory usage on OSX? For some reason FF3 is using 600MB of memory for me and I have no clue why. I've tried reinstalling it removing all my addons but no luck in getting it fixed. Anyone got any ideas?

I don't really see what's so bad about the Mac version's Theme. It looks about the same as Safari does with only some minor differences in icon design.

Don't know about anyone else, but I think the dark grey Leopard-esque theme looks really out of place on Tiger. Plus the gap between the back and forward buttons was made smaller in RC2 - I preferred it when it had the same width gap as you get in the Windows themes (like it did in RC1and before).

Visual reference for folks that aren't running OS X. Safari 3 is first, then Firefox 3. Spoilered for possible h-scroll breakage:
Let's start with Firefox's back/forward setup. What in the hell is that? Why is the dropdown arrow next to forward, when I have no pages to even go forward? Or is that for the back button? Either way, it's ugly as hell.
Pillbox icons elsewhere? They're still in use in a few spots of OS X, yes. They've never used a pillbox button in Safari. This isn't making me feel like I'm within the OS X application ecosystem that Apple is striving for, which is also part of the point of the new themes.
One thing they got right was the rounded search box. Good job.
Something they got wrong? Rounded address bar! It seems like a nitpick but that's something that looks incredibly out of place, especially the blue arrow next to the smaller grey arrow... that's counter-intuitive. I can't think of what either of those would do. Blue arrow go, down arrow displays recent domains I guess?
The OS X theme for Firefox is awful. When I open Firefox and go 'ugh' that's enough to go ahead and make me pass.
