I don't give a fuck that I have fallen ten feet in Dead Rising. That's an example of your side - why they're unnecessary and what have you. But I'm quite proud of the fact that I can say 'hey, I've FC'd a song in Rock Band using only up-strums' and have something to prove it. One of the things I will most enjoy in Home, I think, is visiting my friends' trophy rooms and comparing them to mine. It's a way to establish friendly competition in every game.

I agree -- achievements or bonuses based on skill or using lesser-used aspects of a game can be a lot of fun. The "Bonuses & Medals" in Uncharted, despite not being published online, give you points for doing shit that unlocks bonuses like different costumes and access to weapons, etc. Some of them happen just from playing the game, simply because they're easier or based on common weapons, but there's some good ones there like "5 headshots in a row" or "blow up 3 enemies at a time with a grenade." Things you can do to challenge yourself that wouldn't necessarily come up during regular gameplay.

I actually like them more when they don't contribute to some sort of "gamer score," and are simpy used to give you goodies in-game. I'd rather get something like, say, infinite ammo from performing well in a stealth game, rather than a number under my name.

I'm happy to see 2.4 is on the way. I'm a little appalled by the reaction of the first few posters.

Eh, again, I think you can only hear about a thing so many times before people just start rolling their eyes and telling you to come back when there's something concrete. How long have these rumors been going on for now? Even if it's real now, there's still no actual due date for it, and considering how long they've been pushing things like Home back for, why would you expect anyone to be all hugs and kisses over this?

There's a vast difference between hugs and kisses and the kneejerk reactions of the first few posters here. The vitriol of the first two felt... spiteful. Almost a "FINE! Well, you still suck!" sort of quality.

As to whether or not the thread is too early? *shrug* I don't think so. There's now a firmware revision that we know is going to have this upgrade in it and there's a promise of more information coming.

Sorry that our lips are not firmly planted on the PS3's airhole like yours are.

If you actually looked at my posts in this thread, and actually try not to brush it off as anti-Sony sentimentalism because our pants aren't getting sloppy over this "announcement", then you'll see some actual criticisms of PS3's online play and the constant delays of what Sony promises.

Eh, for your first part, it's PA. You should be used to it by now. Especially you, all things considered.

And again, we've known about this revision for ages now, and it's been discussed to death. Sony coming forward and basically just going "Yup... That thing you knew about right to the revision number? Yeah. That's true." And nothing else? Again, eh. There's no new info, it just feels almost like damage control because everyone expected the next firmware update to BE 2.40. Give us a video showing it working, and isn't some kludgy, half implemented piece of blech, give us an update on how it works, on how it looks, limitations to the bar's options while in the game, ANYTHING that, again, we didn't know was coming many months ago.

I swear to god, there for a moment I thought you were replying to me.

To be completely fair though, I think he was talking more about Walnut than he was you.

Unless they add in some more options to what is there now for your PSN friends, this doesn't seem like it would be all that amazing. As it stands now, what would you be able to do if you could access the XMB in games today:

    - Change IDs during your game (would this confuse some games, would it really be needed)
    - Change system settings during the game (might be useful for some of the PS1/PS2 game settings, but would it work during PS1/PS2 games?)
    - Listen to non-game audio during the game (if you could kick it off from here like a custom soundtrack, and have it continue playing in the game, that could be cool)
    - Pause the game to watch some stored videos (but why?)
    - Access the PSN (I suppose it would be handy to download game content on the fly, but the game would probably have to restart anyway . . )
    - Access the internet browser (I suppose this would be handy for a variety of reasons but how many of us have a computer handy nearby anyway. Maybe if it kept the last page you were at in memory, like if you were accessing a game guide or something)
    - Access your friends menu to send and receive messages and chat.

Most of these probably wouldn't be realistic because of memory constraints. The most useful, realistic one would be the friends menu. Being able to stop and chat would be handy, but would it let you continue to chat while you were playing your game? Sending and receiving messages would be good and a definite improvement, but I think the golden item here would be game invites, which isn't currently an option. If they did add it, the question then would be if it would work with current games, or only with games that supported it going forward? In that event, it wouldn't really be useful until a little further down the road.

At this point, I'm only expecting being able to stop to send and receive messages or chat. I'll still prefer Live, but it will be a step in the right direction. Anything beyond that would be a pleasant surprise.

All I really want personally is the ability to send and receive messages from within games, and do cross game invites. I know, kind of under shooting expectations, but really, I'm not going to sit here and hope for the world. I want something clean and effective to communicate and join friends from within a game. It doesn't even have to be that complex :P I don't even care about the console wang swinging because I own em both. I just want for one of the systems to stop sucking violently when it comes to the online aspect.

Agreed, as this is really the only area lacking in comparison. Saying you have access to the XMB in game implies having access to the whole thing, which really isn't completely useful or necessary. All they really need is to add a menu option to the PS Button in game menu that allows me to access my friends list and send invites. If they can add an invite function that works with upcoming games, :^: . If they can get it to work with all games, :^::^:

Add to that cross game messaging, and you have me all <3

And Bam, as long as companies are able to pull down their servers whenever they please, PSN will still not quite hit the same reliability level of Live. I like my PS3 too, but look at all the games on the PS2 that have had their online just shut down pretty much out of nowhere. Dedicated servers are nice, but so is jumping into a forum, getting some people together for some Crimson Skies or some Phantom Dust together and knowing that it'll still be there (with the one exception, of course, being stupid EA).

I know you like to go all in with your enthusiasm behind things, Bammy, but take a breath and a step back ;)
Because games can only do one or the other AMIRITE!? Seriously man...

custom soundtracks and cross game messaging/invites are all i really want. hopefully sony will deliver on these couple things.

achievements that dont give you anything in the game are pretty pointless, i think. but i know a lot of people love them, so whatever.

A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.
