Oooh, a good time sink, if you can tolerate VGA level graphics; X-Com.
The sequel, Terror from the Deep is supposed to be awesome, but really, really fucking hard and even frustrating. I'd try the first one and see if the genre/style is for you.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I want a time sink like an mmo but minus the multiplayer and online. First up my internets are not that great, b i'm really not digging the current community and I'm a loan gunner in all this, but I still want just a huge game i can sink hours into. Like the OP I tried X3 and I still love the concept but just flying from point A to point B wihtout doing anything. Let me ask this tho, I liked the idea of x3 building an empire and then taking over the galaxy as I see fit, and this could literally take months of play. The one thing I hate about every RTS and such i've played so far... is it is just a random map and games don't last that long (i'm talking I want at least a month or two). Or is there another X like game out there that takes just as long but has a little more action in it?

Although its a RTS, Sins of a Solar Empire sounds pretty close to what your looking for. The only real similarity with X though is that your in space and stuff shoots stuff. Games on a large map can last for weeks, months, basically a long as fuck time. Theres a map editor in addition to a random map thing, and a whole lot of maps made by the devs. Theres nothing stopping you from making a map that has thousands of planets and is generally fuck off massive, although your computer might explode.
Its kind of like a 4x game, civilization and what not, but its also a lot different.
Edit: Galactic Civilizations 2 is a traditional 4x game made by the same guys, turn based instead of real time, more indepth tech tree, etc. Its one of the best out there.
Diablo II is great for this, but then again.. you might want to keep your soul.
While this may be true, you'll be glad you did when the Demons spawn from some hellish maw in the middle of every major city with the soul purpose of harvesting souls. At least then when they catch you can can say. "Sorry, I played Diablo II. Bitch."
Hellgate London might be a good way to waste time, it had a rough release but is pretty awesome now, and there's the option of subscribing for the extra content. If Planetside still had a strong community I would recommend that but alas it is wavering. Other then that Diablo 2, like so many others who have spent the majority of there life sucked in it
Dammit. There's some russian game. It's got Ranger in the title and it's a space RPG thing.
I don't think it's a power rangers in space game, though. It was pretty poorly translated, but crazy fun for the most part.
ya i was hoping hellgate london will fill that need, but the problem is I just can't get into it. And i want to try the other ones but I just can't stand the top down look. I've been eyeing sins of a solar empire. The only reservation I have is, I've heard that after a point it's just a matter of going through the motions because nothing even remotely matches your power. I may still give it a shot. My dream one day hopefully will come true is a single player (online an option) game on the scale of Oblivion with the item quality of diablo and the level system of diablo. I can't stand oblivions items and leveling ugh.
It has a variety of different class types -- you don't have to level them up to level 10 to know if you like the play style - about level 3 or 4 and you will have a good idea - takes about 3 hours to hit level 3 your first time around
There is a really good amount of content: MUCH OF WHICH can be played by a solo player -
The interfaces are intuitive and there is built in player chat (don't have to activate it)
The quests are well designed, with really good graphics. There are no 10 hour raids, although if you string a couple of the really large quests together you can really make a weekend of it.
In short, good fast leveling up RPG'ing - with or without friends - great graphics, bugs are worked out, ton of content... reasonably priced.
Fuck... why did I stop playing...? went back to college... heh

We have winner. I knew I was forgetting about something important. This game is a great way to waste time, especially when you start trying out all the different mods people are making for it. There's a surprisingly active community for such a small game that should keep you busy for weeks if not months. The combat is sort of actiony and tactical with a lot of weapons and character customization.
Final Fantasy 11 is a pretty good game if you're willing to put in a pretty big time investment. A lot more rewarding than a lot of the MMOs out there when you do complete the goals, too.
I got a surprising amount of enjoyment out of Evil Genius. I don't really know how to classify the game, but i've been told that it is very similar to Dungeon Keeper. You build an underground lair, devise security and trap systems, recruit and train minions, and send said minions on global missions (this part isn't really interactive though).
The game is singleplayer only, has an almost continuous gameplay ( it's composed of two islands island bases). I found the game to very rewarding, there is constant progress through expanding/improving your base's infrastructure and security systems, progressing through the minion and technology tech trees, and there is a constant need for funds so you need to balance how many minions you have manning the base and how many you have stealing from the world.
Getting Guitar Hero 3 for the PC would be a great investment, and if you enjoy it, it can be a MASSIVE time-sink. After a couple of weeks of intense playing you could get pretty good, so it at least has some pay-off unlike a mmo.
I've got 2 more hard levels left and I swear I've put 2 hours into each of them already. It's a good game to play while you're doing something else, like listening to a podcast.

Space Rangers, and I second that soooo hard. Honestly I suggest it in any thread that it would fit to do so. The second is a great game, especially as a time waster as every new game plays out differently. It's a very strong "open world" style game where you select a character (out of 5 races and about 6 starting "packages" for each race) that provide different starting equipment and relationships with other races but after that you can just do and be what you want. You can get missions from every inhabited planet you find and missions vary from general do shit in space ones, ground mech/rts missions, and text based adventure missions (which also vary a lot with some being tycoon style run a snow resort, arena sort of situations, races, and many more that in dozens of games I still find ones I've never seen before). There is also an arcade style game found by going through black holes. All of this happens while npcs wage a war against the Dominators (a race of robotic space dwellers) which you can lead offensives, defend solar systems, help fund research against different types of dominators, and so on.
There is just so damn much to do in the game and it is fairly easy to just do what you want and ignore what you don't. Also it is fairly low in system requirements.
If you do look into it, try and get Space Rangers 2 via download (direct2drive, etc.) so as to avoid the Starforce shit found on the CD copies.

I've got a better idea, download it off Impulse.
Impulse is Stardock's new distribution platform (looks as if they're trying to put up some competition to Steam), and the awesome thing about it is that there's no DRM at all! Once you've downloaded the game you don't need to even log it in anymore.

Yes! I just got this and am having a blast with it. Some reviewer said it was like Sid Meier's Pirates but developed by insane people (like the pizza making tournament you have to win, or that jail time leads to choose your own adventure style minigames.) That pretty much sold me (that and impressions I could find of Light of Altair being generally meh).
Are people playing this? Someone start a magnificent thread so that I can figure out what the hell is going on. My little dude and his merchant ship (w/ bonus rocket thrower) aren't sure where to head next.
Dwarf Fortress, insanely complicated, tons of things to do, it will take you probably a week just to figure out how to not die.
Total War, any of them. Combine the length of a campaign with the sheer number of battles, if you choose to fight them all manually, could easily take weeks.
Old standbyes Civilization, Galactic Civilization, Sins of a Solar Empire, etc.

So you were just hanging out, reading some year-old threads?
Play DotA. Its a Warcraft III map that is more like a mod. Each game lasts about 30min to an hour. Its very deep with many different heroes and lots of stuff to learn. The only thing is that there are a lot of assholes who play.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
Seriously. Doesn't it look amazing? It's made by the same group that made the Space Rangers thing yrlss mentioned last page.
Also, if you like old school RPGs, anything these guys have done is supposed to be pretty good. http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/

I love me some Exile 3.
i beat puzzlequest in one weekend of frenzied playing though, so it might not be the timesink you desire.
