A friend of mine is wanting to get another friend a really nice gift for her birthday. Her favorite author is Donald Miller, but she already has all his books. So what would be a good gift?

I was thinking a book by another author that has a similar writing style. But if you guys have another suggestion throw it out there.

Don't say gift card. My friend is asking me for advice so that he doesn't have to resort to something so impersonal.

Wow this is a ridiculous coincidence because I've recently fallen in love with Donald Miller's writing and read 3 of his books so I went looking for something else similar to read and just this morning started in on a book titled "Gall" by Pete Gall.

So far I like it for a lot of the same reasons I like Miller's books, but Gall is criticized by a lot of people because he uses cuss words and discusses some of his personal lustful experiences, etc. I'm not personally offended by that, but I thought I would mention it.

The other Donald Miller fans I know seem to also be fans of "Velvet Elvis" by Rob Bell and Brian D. McLaren's work as well.

Yeah, this girl wouldn't be offended by cussing or, what you described as, "lustful experiences". I'll let my friend know and see if he's up for those. Thanks a lot!

Can you guys describe Donald Miller's writing style/genre? I'm not familiar with him and I bet you'll get some good responses if you widen the description a little bit.

Should have been a rock star.

Never read him or heard of him till today. He's apparently a Christian/spiritual writer. Which is why Pinch states that some people would be offended by Gall's book.

He's a big author for kind of a new age of Christian readers. His favorite book is Catcher in the Rye and you can definitely see its influence on his writing. I guess it's sort of like Catcher as an autobiographical narrative with a spiritual journey as the driving force.

I haven't read the author you mentionned but I just googled him.
It sounds like his books are about life experiences.

This might be in the same genre but not so much faith related:

Notes from a Big Country by Bill Bryson

the guy has lived in both the USA and the UK, and this is his new found perspective on the USA after returning there. Its mostly light-hearted comedic life stories.

If your more interested in the UK he has Notes from a Small Island

Haruki Murakami The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

Somewhat spiritual, irreverent and modern. Quite a compelling read, and it's nice and thick which equals a good present book.

I enjoy Donald Miller's stuff even though I think he can be annoyingly condescending sometimes.

If she's looking for similar things, she might like Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell, which is kind of similar, but I like it more. I've also heard really good things about The Shack by William Young, but I haven't read it myself yet.

Thanks for the advice guys. My friend got her Velvet Elvis and another book by Pete Gall. Couldn't find "Gall" by Pete Gall.

    Ok to close thread.
