Woah woah woah.. Siren remake? Oh shit, I think I just soiled myself at the thought of that.
    PS3, downloadable.
At least, we think it's a remake.
    No-one's quite sure.

From the look of things, it's more of an alternate history version of the original game with the same general plot, but new twists & turns and a new cast of characters.

    And the thing looks incredible.

Lots of screenshots in the spoiler tag.

If there's a game that will convince me to pick up a PS3, this is it. I'm a huge Siren fan and since Sony publishes the series, the chance of it showing up on another system is nonexistent.

I checked out the Magic Box page on this. Damn that looks good. Hopefully it'll have the "awesome" voice acting from the original.

I got Siren through Goozex recently, but I ran into a problem on the third stage with the escort girl falling off of the bridge and alerting the guards to come kill her while she's technically off the map. Are there more escort missions? I hate escort missions, especially shitty ones.

I'm very familiar with that map and off the bridge isn't off the map (the river bed is dry so you can travel on it). And yes, there are plenty of escort missions.

Siren is simultaneously the most frustrating and most rewarding horror game I've ever played. The learning curve is very steep and the difficulty level is always high, but once you start to get the hang of the game, it becomes manageable and for story & scares, few games even come close to Siren's level.

Ah, I assumed that the player couldn't get down to the riverbed and the girl couldn't get back up. I'm not exactly heartened by the prospect of further escorts, but I'll give it a try again.

Escorts was one of the things that Siren 2 really improved over the original. Whereas in the original game, escorts were always a liability, in Siren 2, escorts generally could take care of themselves: they'd pick up enemy weapons and help you fight.

Siren 2 was a much less frustrating game than Siren 1 while still retaining what made Siren great which makes me believe that the Siren Remake will be nothing short of incredible.

I really enjoyed that first scene with the cop. The bridge irritated me, and I haven't been in a big gaming mood, so I didn't pick it up again.

Siren was an odd beast; the stealth mechanics worked, enemies were genuinely intimidating, and the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife. Sightjacking was great, evasion was your most effective tool, and the story had this dreamlike quality to it that made it surprisingly appealing.

On the other hand, the disjointed way in which levels progressed was damn near criminal. The puzzles were about as unorthodox as your average horror game, but with the added irritation that their significance wasn't obvious until you went through the area as someone else. I was slightly annoyed when I found out the purpose of freezing a towel was to set a delayed-reaction noisemaker to lure a zombie out from a locked room. My brain *broke* when I realized I'd gone through the level three times before I figured out how to do this.

Siren was compelling enough to finish, and spooky enough to keep me on my toes the whole way. It is, however, a game that will really, really try to get you to stop playing. If Siren 2 is (was?) even halfway coherent in how its levels and puzzles are structured, I'll buy it at the drop of a hat if it can still be found.

This game was made by the same people as Obscure II, so I have faith they can do it. The controls for that game were really solid.

With the Obscure devs doing the Wii/PS2 version, and all the crazy physics stuff in the Eden-developed 360 version, I'm kind of interested in both of them. I can't wait to see some more reviews as this game really has the chance to be something cool, in both forms.

EDIT: Urahonky, I would play a randomly generated survival horror. You could do it Diablo style, with randomly generated rooms connecting set piece areas together that would have bosses and story content. There's also the ability for easy DLC there if the company making it really wanted to milk their customers. :)

No kidding. How awesome would that be? You'd never be able to learn the structure of the place, which is half the fun in my opinion. The whole "where does this door lead" feeling needs to happen more often.

Nosferatu: This comes very close to what you want. What the Amazon page doesn't list is the fact that you've got a few hours real time to complete the quest. This was a blast for Halloween game night a couple years ago.

Dammit Don. I didn't need to spend more money this week! :P

So I got Nosferatu in, and it's amazing. I'm seriously creeped out at every moment while playing. But the game is balls hard. I had to go from Medium difficulty to easy because I couldn't make it through a few rooms without getting slaughtered.

Nice to know that everything changes when you get back... Except the monster placement. Which isn't a big deal though, because sometimes they appear, and sometimes they don't. At some time they will show up though.

Overall it's a great game. Thanks Don. :^:

Siren 2 was just as nonsensical in some of its puzzles, however it was also much more upfront about when you needed to do stuff in other levels in order to solve puzzles in other levels. Plus it included an optional hint system.

As to finding it, well, that depends on what region you live in. I hear it's pretty easy to find in Europe, however Siren 2 was never released in the US. I personally played one of the Asian versions.

Also, I've played a bit into Episode 2 on 360 now and I got stuck and had to start a section over. I managed to get a car I was driving stuck between two pieces of debris, and I couldn't get it to move. I don't think it was technically a bug, as it was just the physics engine reacting properly, but still it kind of sucked. It's the only technical issue I've experienced so far and I'm still enjoying the game.

It's definitely helping that I didn't really have any expectations for this game. I watched a couple of the tech demos early on, thought they were neat, and then it would drop off my radar. Every now and then a thread here would remind me it looked cool, but I don't think I was ever expecting this to be a triple A title.

Also, I keep forgetting that this was done by the Test Drive Unlimited guys, and it's kind of ridiculous that it runs on an engine made for a racing game.

Also, I keep forgetting that this was done by the Test Drive Unlimited guys, and it's kind of ridiculous that it runs on an engine made for a racing game.

GTA IV used the same engine as Table Tennis.

    Real life uses the same engine as [strike]Pong[/strike] [strike]Splatterhouse[/strike] [strike]Manhunt[/strike] [strike]Shadow of Memories[/strike] [strike]Metal Gear Solid 2[/strike] [strike]Sonic Spinball[/strike] Pong.

We are. And when you come back here cursing us for how hard the first game is, we'll know our job is done well. :P

So, I enjoy most of the mechanics in this game.

But the controls are made of shit and fail. And we must eat them. :(

Yup, sadly only in the 360/PC version though. I got a chance to play some of the Wii version, and Urahonky was right on the money with his impressions several posts back. The game feels rushed and unfinished. The script is totally different from the other version even though the plot outline is basically the same, and the voice acting is laughable. If you're going to get one of these, 360/PC is the one to get.

I'm mystified by the mix of reviews. Half bad, half "fascinating but flawed."

I...I just want a good creepy game. With Max Payne.

Maybe I'll just replay Max Payne 2. Again. For the millionth time.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm having fun with it on 360. It tries a lot of cool stuff, and it does have the voice of Max Payne, as well as a similar vibe in places. It's not really that creepy though, more of a "blockbuster" style game than horror.

I really hope Alan Wake actually comes out.

I checked out the gametrailer review, and I have to admit, some of the graphics and set pieces seem to be downright impressive.

I just watched that review myself, and having played a bit of the game, I'd personally say that's probably the most accurate review I've seen so far.
