Age of Attendees?

Ok, I have a general idea that this will be a typical 18-27 year old male dominated gathering but I was wondering how many people are outside that genre. I am a 38 year old dad/gamer and I am taking my son/gamer (17) and daughter/gamer (12). I was having a REALLY hard time trying to figure out what our summer vacation could be that would be fun for all three of us since we have three different age groups and when I was reminded of PAX(by listeing AGAIN to Wil Wheatons PAX address) it clicked. So just curious if I will be the token old guy(as my kids are so fond of calling me) or if others will be around. August can't get here soon enough.

Welcome oh wizened one to the mythical clan of the 25 year olds!

Me and my 2 friends coming are all 25, really how else can you afford to gallivant across the countryside to PAX unless you got a real job, or very generous parents.

I was 15 at PAX last year and had no problems with my age. I enjoyed the panels and playing all the games of course, and felt fine hanging out in line with people much older who included me in their DS games.

    I'm 28 too, I didn't feel too old.

Just don't be that old guy who told us to keep it down in the classic console room when a random group of us started actually having a good time playing this crappy Nintendo game. I guess he didn't want to be bothered while he played Street Fighter 2 by himself.

There are girls at PAX, too. ;) You and your kids should fit in just fine.

If your daughter was older (read: of the dating age) I would tell you to teach her how to deflect the more flirtatious nerds but you shouldn't have any problem.

Whether you have issues with a 12 year old at the event depends on what kind of parent you are. Last year's keynote started with "My name's Will Wheaton, and Jack Thompson can suck my balls." Jerry and Mike also like to announce their new favorite explative every year...

Depending on your standards language is the only area I think people might get out of line.

You know what? My kids and I are reading these forums because we are soooo geeked to be able to hang and do something together in a city we have never visited. After seeing these responses we are going to have a 'totally rad time'..sorry, old guy saying. Our 'first' experience of PAX was listening to Wil doing last years keynote and since then we have bought his books and had him sign them in person in L.A. So basically I am saying my kids are well adjusted(cool) and they know what is going on(hip) and I look forward to seeing you all there because my sense of humor suffers from mere texting(though my kids will say it is an old man looking for attention....ha!)

...back in my day we didn't have anything you could "waggle" or any of these newfangled "colors" you got there on your fancy-schmancy viewscreens. We had two types of monitors: amber and green, and that's how we liked it. Why, all this 720p and 1080i claptrap is just there to spread confusion! If it ain't vt100, it's the work of the devil. Now pardon me while I rest my bones on this here davenport. Zzzzzzzzzzz
    [/old man voice]

It really says something about games and how they can appeal to so many generations. My Dad was a pinball wizard and used to take me out to what passed as arcades in the mid-70's. The first game I ever played was Biplane, and I was crazy for it in all its monochrome glory.

I'm as stunned by awesome graphics as anyone else, but the games I love the most are ones that would still be fun if realized by crude blocks. Nethack is the perfect representation of this. It really says something about the design of a game as a game when you can recoil in horror from a purple capital L appearing on your screen.

I get "totally stoked" (I used that phrase correctly, right?) for PAX every year. It's so much fun to see the universal appeal of gaming together in one place. Everyone has a story to tell about why they love it.

You know, I think game designers of today could learn a thing or two from older games. Back then they couldn't rely on fancy graphics or marketing campaigns. They just had to make the games fun to play. I know that's a pretty novel idea but I sometimes get the feeling that some in the gaming industry have forgotten that. Some designers think all you need is pretty graphics and good trailers. But true gamers know quality when they play it.

It's because all these young whippersnappers have no imaginations, ruined by the tv and the hip hop music, with their hipping and a hopping and a bipping and a bopping.
