Resident Evil 4 on PC - Help me please, my eyes are bleeding.
I just got RE4 on PC, I traded in my Resident Evil 4 for GCN on Goozex to get points for RE4 on PC. I know many will say this was a bad move but I didn't feel like playing my Gamecube, plus I want all the extra content that was included on PS2. So, I've got some questions:
I'm playing on a 24' Wide screen LCD monitor . . . when I set it to 1920x1200, it will not load. Is there a fix?
Is there anyway I can use my mouse to aim? I guess, the controls aren't so bad but I'd much prefer mouse aiming, or if I buy the wireless connector for my 360 controller, will it work?
I want to make it as pretty as possible, can somebody link me to solid graphical mods?
Oh, for anybody else, before you think about posting it:
<Goomba> Regicid3 doesn't know how to use Google, apparently.
<Regicide> I know how to use google, dumb ass.
<Goomba> Really? Is that why you can't google "RE4 mouse aim mod"?
<Regicide> I wanted people who I kind of, sort of, barely trust that have actually have experienced the game on PC opinions on mods
<Regicide> instead of a bunch of random ass comments on filefront
The rest I cannot help you with. Unfortunately this was probably one of the worst ports out there apparently.
Then again it's also cheap.
The best modding option for the PC version is probably buying the Wii one and telling yourself both put together cost just as much as the GameCube one costed for the early adopters.
I guess they thought mouse aim would make it play almost like a FPS and make the game so much easier? That's really the only logical thought one could have to justify such an act.
Still very stupid though.

They just wimped out on the port. The Wii version has pointer aiming and is fantastic.

Get the mod thing that one guy made so you can use your Wii remote instead of the mouse. I know your mouse cost as much as the Wii controller, but the Wii is better. You can probably find it here.
My friend just cut off the end of his OXbox controller and sodded on a USB end to play this game. With some visual mods thrown in there, it actually works really well, and when one has a controller and the PC hooked up to a big, high resolution TV, it becomes the best version of the game out there.
It just takes a lot of work to get it there. Still just a terrible, terrible port.
I'll recommend some stuff to get you started (be warned, the main mods are large so they're going to take a while to download):
1) - First you'll want the 360 button pack replacement pack if you're going to be using a 360 controller. You can also install the PC Keyboard button replacement pack if you want, the two shouldn't clash IIRC. There also exists a PS2 button replacement pack if you want.
2) - Next, time to make the game pretty. Grab the Texture Patch 2.0 pack, which replaces ALL in-game textures with awesome, ultra-high-res textures. See screenshots.
2.1) -Optionally you can also download and install the Enhanced Environment pack over the Texture patch, it's just some extra refinements on some of the textures and things.
3) - For some reason they went with pre-rendered cut-scenes as in the PS2 version, instead of in-engine. Naturally these look blurry as heck (really low res). So someone did some re-encoding and made them ultra-smooth and awesome, as you can see here
4) - This shader mod will give you proper lighting and depth of field / motion blur (both of which you can toggle off if you want).
5) - I've never used this (it's a recent development), but you can also grab the Bloom lighting mod, which may help things to look even better still. This works off of changing the shaders as well, so it's either this one or the one above. There's also links somewhere in that thread for a really cool Sin City shader model, and an in-progress cell shading model.
6) - I'm not sure whether or not this is included in with the first texture pack, but there are higher res texture packs for the Villagers / Bosses and the Monks. I'd say only download these if the villagers look like crap. It's been a while so I can't remember whether I even made use of those. You're probably fine without them. EDIT: Actually yeah, now that I've re-installed, I think it's safe to say you probably don't need these.
In theory you're done there, but why settle with just that?
- The laser trail mod is a nice enhancement, change the colour, trail and opacity of your sighting laser.
- Proper high definition menu's and items pack. Be careful with this. Some users have reported preoblems using it, so I'd suggest backing up the relevant folders before installing. Has worked OK for me so far from what I've tried.
From there, it's your game. There are LOADS of character skin and weapon model / sound replacement packs out listed on the mod page, and some animation change mods as well. Like the Counter-Strike weapons model pack for example. There's a pretty funky Cosa Nostra skin for leon's mobster outfit. PersoSkins are also quite good, I like the look of SAS Leon. Handgun and knife reskin packs. Leon STARS skin pack.
There are any number of skins for the rest of the main crew (Ashley, Wesker, Ada etc.).
There's a community mega-patch in the works that's supposed to be a one-stop fix all for all the good stuff. Keep tabs on it here
The rest I cannot help you with. Unfortunately this was probably one of the worst ports out there apparently.
Then again it's also cheap.

I dunno man. The port is undoubtedly crap, but after having modded the tar out of it, I find it even better than the GC version. It's got all the extra's of the PS2 version and it looks really awesome in hi-def. Just make use of a 360 pad and you're set. Heck, that's even before I do stuff like customise my skins and stuff.
That awesome list of mods has convinced me to finally get RE4 for PC. I loved it when I rented it on Wii, hopefully the port is less terrible with all those pretty pretty mods.
It has been via some scripting. Wiimote operates off of bluetooth, so it's not difficult to read into a PC if you've got a bluetooth reader. It's not quite the same as the Wii version obviously but from what I understand it gives better aiming results than a standard gamepad, or so I've heard.
Yeah, so far I have all the fancy graphics mods, the higher res videos mod, and the 360 button replacer mod and I can't say it's bad at all. It's a shitty port if left alone to be sure, but with mods it's better than the gamecube version.
Thanks subedii! I bought this for a couple bucks on Half.com to play with my new gamepad, and actually did some searching for mods, but never saw all that stuff. I've never played a Resident Evil game so even if it's shitty, at least I'll have it checked off my todo list.

The forum doesn't really pop up on google when you go searching for RE4 mods. You might find a couple of the more popular mods listed elsewhere but for some reason the main site doesn't.
In any case, it's a pretty awesome game. Although by now about a half dozen games have already adopted it's gameplay mechanics so it might not seem as novel today. Dialogue is the usualy Resident Evil fare (i.e. cheesy and unintentially "so bad it's good" one liners).
It's not scary like the other RE games, it's more action oriented. You also don't really need to know about the previous games since this one starts off on a different plot. All you really need to know is that Albert Wesker is the series' main antagonist (although he's not really involved here either).
Are there any scary or terrifying missions at all in RE4? I guess I was hoping for a little more on the fear side, since 3rd person shooting games with gamepad controls don't excite me that much. (I'm not going to bother with the mouse mod unless some here really thinks it's great.)
There are a few times where you'll get that lump in the back of your throat, but not nearly as often as RE1 or 2 (or hell, 3).
Some people found certain parts of the game pretty scary. Mainly:
[spoilers]the regenerators. Although admittedly whilst I did find them a little creepy, I can't really say they scared me as such[/spoilers]
In any case, the game was designed for 3rd person controls, and you'll soon get used to it. The gameplay itself is fairly different in tone from other action games. Whilst it's not so much "survival horror" you could more call it "survival action". Emphasis on the "survival".
Make it through the opening village alive and you might understand what I mean.
I call the opening village scene a "rite of passage" as it were. If you can beat that, then you're ready to play through the game. If you can't, just keep trying until you can.
Oh, I forgot to ask: there's no magic quicksave hack somewhere, is there? I know, I know, it's about challenge and all, but I'm here for a tour, and don't care to retry sections more than 2 or 3 times. But I'm not getting my hopes up, so I'll just have to sharpen my console gaming skills that have been dull for oh, 15 years.

It's not THAT bad. Seriously, I play almost no console games either, and I had no real problems getting used to the 360 controller. And you're right, the game wouldn't be much fun without the challenge.
If you're really keen on being tourist I suppose you could just download the trainer and freeze your health or something like that. But then I really wouldn't see the point in playing.
Of course, you could just use the trainer to unlock costumes as well.

Dying in RE4 is kind of a moot point as at worse you only lose a few minutes of progress.
Yeah I haven't even played it more than 5 minutes. I'm just a PC whiner at lame console mechanics that I thought I left in the trash can a decade ago. (Mafia is such a great game, but every few missions make me just roll my eyes at the absurdity of the experience.)
Then again, TIE Fighter makes me restart missions when I die, and I will happily do that over and over until I get it right. Maybe I'm more forgiving of classic DOS games than modern ones. But don't mind my ramblings.

Should help you out with graphics.
Yeah...it defaults to all keyboard control, and without modding there's no way to aim with the mouse.
I'm not kidding.

Gah?
I mean, sure, ports are hilariously easy on the pc when you can actually aim worth a damn, but still. Keyboard is not meant for fite.
It just takes a lot of work to get it there. Still just a terrible, terrible port.
- Mouse aiming mod exists but it's allegedly crap (never used it myself) as it's essentially an analogue stick emulator.
- Game is easily compatible with a 360 controller
- However the button prompts are messed up
- No idea on the monitor thing, never heard of that problem. I was running it on a 1680 x 1050 monitor so I couldn't tell you.
Now, to go about fixing this broken game and making it something worth playing.
First thing you want to do is download and install the patch. Next, you're going to want to hit the mod forum:
http://z6.invisionfree.com/Resident_Evil_4_PC/index.php?act=idx
Before you can mod the game, you need to do some file extraction, a guide to which can be found here:
http://z6.invisionfree.com/Resident_Evil_4_PC/index.php?showtopic=4
Once you've extracted the files, you're ready to replace them and really party.
The main mod listing is here:

This will take some time . . . I will probably pick up the 360 wireless receiver for my PC tonight.
Well there's your problem
If you have a Wii, however, you should grab that version right away. It is the best.
If you don't...well, then just wait until you get one.
I just plugged in my 360 controller and it worked fine.

Having played both the GC and the PC versions I'd have to disagree.
Yes the default PC version is very poorly implemented, but if you're not afraid to tweak it, it's a pretty awesome version in its own right.

No clue what a regenerator is. ;-)
Bah, I fail so hard at typing.
And regenerators... well, you'll know them when you find them.
