CPU problem?

The Man with No NameThe Man with No Name __BANNED USERS regular
I'm building a computer, and it powers on fine as long as the 8-pin ATX 12v Power connector isn't sending power to the motherboard (meaning the CPU isn't being powered). If I connect the 8 pin connector, and then try to power on, nothing happens. Fans don't spin, nothing gets power, just an orange led lights up which I have no idea what it means and isn't anywhere in the manual. The motherboard DOES have power, because the standby light is on, but nothing happens.

So I'm trying to figure out what the hell is wrong.

Does this mean the CPU is bricked? Because I've never had a dead CPU before so I don't really know.

What the hell can I do?

It's either the CPU or PSU. If you have another Power supply you can swap in to test, do that.

sounds like its underpowered. id check to make sure there isnt something wrong with the 12v connector if u have a multimeter.

I doubt its the power supply. It's 750 W and as I've said it powers on just fine as long as the 12v 8 pin connecter isn't connected to the board

my motherboard also has a damn orange led that turns on when you press the power button, but the manual doesn't list anywhere what that actually means.

Are you sure the connectors you are placing are not PCI-E connectors? Even if it is 750w it could just be faulty.

it's a PCI-E2 cable that I'm using, if that makes a difference. I didn't see any other cables with 8 pins like that.

Though one end of the cable allows you to break away to pins so you can just have a regular 6-pin PCI-E connection or something.

okay, those cables you are plugging in are for video cards, not Motherboard power. That's why it's not working. PCI-E on the cable means it's for a PCI express card, not a CPU.

    What PSU do you have?

Also, for the record just because the PSU is 750W doesnt' mean that it's not faulty.

Ah, I see. I looked some more and found out the 8 pin cable i'm actually looking for is actually just split into two seperate 4 pin cables. I plugged them in both into the same slot and was able to power up. Cool.

It's amazing how many people do that. I don't understand why they didn't make the video card plug a different shape.
