Help for corrupted save files on a PS3?

First off, I know I've been asking a lot of PS3 questions lately, and I apologize if I'm becoming spam-ish in this regard. I'll gladly close this thread if need be. I've already tried looking around for a solution to this problem though. The official Playstation forums made me want to claw my eyeballs out because they were so unhelpful when I asked a question, and emailing Sony tech support got me a two day wait for an uninformative automated FAQ reply. Since I know folks around here are intelligent and literate, I thought I'd risk being annoying to ask another question.

Anyhow, on to the problem. I'm using an 80 GB PS3 (from the MGS4 bundle) running the latest (2.36) firmware, and I'm trying to play through Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (from the essential collection) in backward compatibility mode. I've made an internal PS2 save card on the PS3 HDD to save my games.

Every so often, when I try to save, it will at random tell me there was an error. Sometimes it will say 'no data found' and other times it simply says 'save failed - check your memory card'. The result after such an error seems random. Sometimes the save will be there and load fine the next time. Much more often, however, there will be a 'corrupted data' file on the internal memory card. When this happens, it becomes impossible to save to the card until I delete the corrupted data. In the most extreme case I've experienced so far, it not only corrupted my latest save game, but the entire contents of that internal memory card. The data could not be deleted manually, and I had to erase the internal memory card completely.

Playing MGS3 is a tense experience now, but I'd prefer the tension come from the enemies and story elements rather than random hardware failures. Does anyone have any advice on this issue? I'm mostly concerned about whether or not this is a BC issue, or if it's a PS3 HDD issue, and what steps I might be able to take to correct it. I've not tried any other game on this PS3 other than MGS3 at the moment, mostly because I don't want to play MGS4 until I've beaten the third one, and that's the only other game I have. Any help offered would be appreciated.

tl;dr - MGS3 saves on a PS3 in BS mode keep corrupting when trying to save a game. Is this a BC issue, or a hardware issue, and can I do anything to stop it? Thanks.

I don't have a solution, but I would like to note that according to this

MGS3: Subsistence had problems with saving, but it was supposedly fixed in a later PS3 software update. It should be working... but in your case it really isn't working all.
