I seem to recall an article or inteview about how miyamoto doesn't like a lot of story in games so the story writer guy is always trying to sneak story into the games, like that whole storybook thing in galaxy.
I really hope there isn't a sandbox game made by Nintendo. But if they DID do it, I'm sure it would be better than the current selection we've got out there now.
You guys are making me want to hunt down a copy of Metroid Fusion...
Don't do it!
UncleSporky: By now, Samus has plenty of weapons and abilties. What would be the major problem with letting us choose (just once, when a new file is started) which ones she takes with her?
And of course you're not advocating have no powerups at all. Everyone who trots out this old complaint asks for the same thing, and yet I've never heard anything that new or original or worth persuing.
I'm a bit confused here - my sarcasm detector is beeping, but I think it's broken.
As I see it, there are a limited number of choices:
1) GenHero loses all their powers up at the start/end of each game for intelligent (or not), or practical (or not) reasons.
2) GenHero retains all powerups, negating the need to search SubWorlds A-F for them.
Of course, now we don't have a game, so
2a) GenHero is powered-up, as it applied to the first game, and severly underpowered for this one. New powerups replace the old ones. Which, aside from asthetics, is equivalent to starting over from scratch - if the Infinity +1 Sword does to Sequel's BaseEnemy what Wooden Sword did to Original's BaseEnemy, then the game will play out in the same way - UncleSporky's Triple Jump copout.
2b) Gates: each boss, when defeated, opens a new area, culminating in the final area. I was thinking more SM when I wrote this, but now I realize a better fit is Metroid II. They could easily have started you off with all the items gained in Metroid 1 without the game suffering.
I'm not sure if it counts as a third option, but I'd like to see
3) Sequel's items/abilities directly influenced by porting the savefile from Original - if you did a low item run, then you'll be underpowered. The biggest problem with this is that developers have to plan for the people who've not actually played the first. Applying the difficulty select towards this might work: if you don't have an original save game and select 'hard', then it'll load a default low-item run.

IMO we should take the suit loss 1 step further and have half the game be in the zero suit! Hell it doesn't even need to be a 'loss' she could just take it off while completing missions in a populated area where it wouldn't be so wise to run around in a giant mechanical battle suit.
Maybe explore the bounty hunter side a bit more with a non-linear do whatever mission you want style play complete with ship battle/suit missions/zsuit sneaking, spy type missions? Metroid meets freelancer maybe? With upgrades as a reward for the missions or just found along the way.
Oh no, I'm starting to sound like this. This is what happens when I talk Metroid.
If it makes you feel better, that actually sounds pretty awesome.
It could be done as a prequel to the first metroid - she didn't get the suit as soon as the chozo saved her, so there is place for exploring her training and perhaps early missions before she had her suit, or even a beta version of her suit later on. There was even some official art on the metroid fusion cart showing her as a teenager with powered gauntlets and a rather large gun.

The only thing against this is the title of the series. (being a prequel anyway)
Of course, it wouldn't really bother me playing a game called Metroid, if I never saw a metroid.
edit: wait.. I have to ask. The only metroid game I haven't played: Hunters. Does it have metroids? I know the demo did.
Wouldn't a prequel allow for more leeway with Metroids than a sequel?
While true, there is still an unknown sized gap between MP3 and Metroid II.
And actually, in Metroid Fusion, by the end, you could assume that the BSL was breeding them for their own purposes, so who knows what information on metroids they still have.
According to Metroid 1 and the Prime series the classic weak to ice metroids were engineered to be a source of limitless energy so it is entirely possible someone would risk making them again for that reason.

@Xeno: Not to mention I'm sure there are plenty of X-parasites(worse name ever, btw) still on SR388.
Edit: actually, it'd be pretty neat if they expanded on the x-parasites to the point they had their own bodies, or maybe a hive-mind. I may have just been playing too much halo recently, but that could totally work.
Besides, Halo never even lets you fight its Gravemind.
There's also the hope that Dread or whatever comes after fusion is Samus vs the Galactic Federation, since she can pretty much be charged with treason at this point.

While this plotline would be pretty awesome.
I would put money on Nintendo never ever letting you "shoot" human beings in mass.
I'd love to see an expanded metroid universe game anyway. Rather than samus, play as a GF soldier, or one of the hunters from the DS game, etc. So much potential in the universe they have crafted.
I was really hoping that metroid prime was going to be a hidden final boss in hunters, but nope. So dumb.
Dread could be done awesome if instead you play it from the perspective of a GF soldier, trying to capture samus. At some point you'd switch sides against the GF, or something.
There's also the hope that Dread or whatever comes after fusion is Samus vs the Galactic Federation, since she can pretty much be charged with treason at this point.
Well, MP3 implied that that one guy from Hunters is going to be a character in the next game, and since he's against the federation, it's possible that they team up.

My memory sucks. Which guy was this? (Answer in spoilers just in case).

No need. Grunt enemies are Federation Robots, bosses are biological experiments gone wrong, the last boss is either the main Aurora Unit or a Federation guy that's mutated himself to the point that he can no longer be considered human.

She hijacked and crashed a research station into a planet after refusing direct order, and stole a federation ship.

To me, the crappiest thing about fusion:
That wierd ass conversation between your ship, and the Federation guy. I mean... what the fuck was that? Was it supposed to build somewhere and I missed it?
Also, is it really necessary to spoil games as old as fusion? I mean, MP3 maybe... MAYBE. But fusion? That came out the same time MP1 did.

True, it's a just in case. I actually liked all the metroids, sure Fusion's easily the worst but still it's a good game.

Nintendo did publish Goldeneye and Perfect Dark under the Rareware label though, so it has happend before.

Alright, I think you got me with advance wars. I could write off Rare as being 2nd party, and I was specifically talking about shooting people in regards to Fire Emblem. Advance wars though... I forgot somehow Nintendo found a way for war to be cartoony. :P

They should just remake Metroid Prime 1-3 with the Super Metroid engine.
:P
Even better, I'm sure the mod community could do it if nothing else.
