Since Gabe is a mac user, not quite sure about Tycho, I thought I'd post this here.
Spore and the creature tool, both do not support OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) and the GMA 950 chipset. Both of these, however, are sufficient for running this tool.
So some people over at
TUAW, figured out a workaround. On which I based my version of this tool.
Demo, of course. (
Warning: the macbooks with the GMA950 chipset, do not work. Intel-only.)

I'll take this opportunity to spew some hate around, since it is what drove me to putting this effort into getting this to absolutely everyone:
Mac games have reached bottom level. And these little things, like making a Leopard only check as requirement(!) for running this game, makes me want to throw up. Into EAs face, preferably. Especially since Tiger > Leopard, and Snow Leopard round the corner, another silliness, I see no reason to upgrade for anyone or anything until an OS comes around which does as its' told.
So to you mac users, have a blast! (by the way, this version is also smaller than EAs. They have never heard of compression, apparently.)

Thank god for my Windows partition.
Oh it's such a nice day, I think I'll go out the window! Whoa!
Leopard introduces some changes regarding OpenGL processing, (for example multi threading, but it should be in the latest upgrade of 10.4 too).
GMA 950 is bottom level (below the bottom) regarding gaming. I think Apple shot themselves in the foot while they went with this chipset - but its very cheap to include, the Macbooks are not really for gaming, so I can understand that decision. Even the low level onboard solutions from (AMD and nvidia) are more powerful. As long as the install base consists of machines which have these low end HW, developers/publishers won't care about the platform - period. (Luckily this is changing with the mid-tier machines like the iMac).
One reason could be that most of the processing is done in software if you use a GMA chipset (shaders etc.). Maybe the 950 drivers aren't fleshed out, so EA decided to not support them at this time - or they simply did a sloppy port and simply forgot the entries in the config file of the game. :P
But the Tiger thing really gets on my nerves. That's simple marketing > end user. Just like that whole Cider business, although it does port faster. (and runs worse, of course). So that's another Marketing > End User Friendliness.
I don't like EA. I'm glad they kept certain licenses alive, such as Command & Conquer, and the whole Battle For Middle Earth business was nice too. But aside from that, I hope Will Wright switches Publisher. Because he does seem like a good developer. But this EA thing is stifling to end users.
