Hmm, I heard Sins of a Solar Empire was pretty good, it's single player only though. You can't go wrong with some good old Broodwar or Warcraft III, though.

Hrm.
I haven't gotten into a RTS since Rise of Nations.
THEY KEEP ON RISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN'
World in Conflict is pretty cool if you haven't tried it out. It doesn't have a resource system, you just get a certain number of points for units (which replenish slowly if they're destroyed).
It's highly focused on micro. Lots of attention is paid to special powers, tactics, and support abilities. If your computer can run it, give it a whirl.
Dawn of War Soulstorm came out, it is still Dawn of War deep down but hey, how is that not fun?
Played Company of Heroes + expansion? That's a good one. Supreme Commander and expansion? I liked that and it has a large focus on HUUUGE armies and it isn't THAT old.
To be honest, not a lot of RTS games coming out recently, but they've all been fairly good quality.
My favorite RTS ever: Supreme Commander + expansion. The expansion totally revamps the AI and makes it incredibly good, even without cheating.
Sins is ok, but I got bored of it pretty fast as it is really shallow. Depending on how you look at it it's either an incredibly shallow space RTS (compared to say Homeworld or even Star Wars Empire at War) or an incredibly shallow 4x game (compared to Master of Orion 2 or Imperium Galactica 2 or Stars!).
My two recently have been (as above) C&C3 and Sins of a Solar Empire; sins is a bit less RTS-ish, though it depends on what type of RTS you're looking for
Supreme Commander I thought had some decent computer-eating requirements, though it was also quite highly reviewed (it basically depends if you like the Total Annihilation-style of game)
Sins of a Solar empire is good if you like your RTS's being more like, for example, Civ 4, rather than StarCraft.
Sins is very resource/empire building oriented. The combat is easy going but still very fun, especially when you get huge fucking fleets.
If you don't like the heart attack pace of Battle.net or something like Dawn of War (which would be in the middle), then Sins can be fun.
But if you hate waiting for resources and want particularly tactical combat then I don't think Sins is the answer unless you play online, because the AI, in all it's wisdom, is fairly predictable (although they improve it with every patch and a couple have passed since I played).
The next best choice IMO is Dawn of War, it's basically the best designed RTS I've played, the race variety is pretty damn good, incredible graphics and unit variety... shit... i need to go play it now. I have not played Soul Storm though and know nothing about it.
COMPANY OF HEROES COMPANY OF HEROES COMPANY OF HEROES
Other options include Worldshift, World in Conflict, Supreme Commander, COMPANY OF HEROES, Command & Conquer 3, and jesus christ buy Company of Heroes.
Starcraft is the only real RTS worth a damn. Its not loaded with cheap gimmicks like other games, it is the epitome of RTS. Even after 10 years, people still play it profusely. Its worth it.

Cheap gimmicks? What the hell does that mean?
Any resolution over 800x600 or any gameplay innovation since 1998 is a cheap gimmick.

I highly recommend Sins of a Solar Empire. I think the empire management is overstated in this thread, and is actually on par with or less than Starcraft, for example. You start at a home planet, and expand by jumping to neighboring planets, clearing them of enemies (mobs or enemy players) and colonizing the planet. From there it's pretty straightforward, you can queue all your structures if you have the resources for them, as well as research, which is done at a separate research screen rather than at individual buildings.
I gotta jump on the Company of Heroes bandwagon. Truly a tremendous game, only a few "races" but they have a nice feel, incredible tactical options.
As for Sins, it's something of an acquired taste. Very slow, very very slow. Much less micromangement. And the games can be long. I tend to think of Sins as more of a real time Civilization as opposed to something kin to Starcraft. A ridiculously awesome game to be sure.

3D will never catch on.
Thought I'd add in a few oddballs.
Medieval Total War II - Part Civ, Part Tactics. Great game with endless replayability
Darwinia - Amazing graphics. Very simple RTS, but very engaging
Universe at War was supposed to be ok, I'm sure it's pretty cheap now,
I'm curious, since I don't know if it was mentioned. Does anyone recall what that card based (RTS? Turn based?) strategy that was mentioned back on the front page a while ago? Gabe and Tycho seemed to praise it pretty highly at the time, though I haven't heard mention anywhere since.
Going to go ahead and restate Medieval 2: Total War and Rome: Total War. Thing is, if you get Rome: Total War play through once on vanilla then download and install the mod for Rome Total Realism, it makes it quite a bit more difficult and accurate than vanilla.
Also, seems a bit obvious but Warcraft III or the older ones if you can find and run them.
EDIT: Also, apparently Sins of a Solar Empire is coming out with an expansion sometime which will flesh it out a bit more and add singleplayer. No date yet though.
Seven Kingdoms Ancient Adversaries. If you like a good balanced RTS with lots of economic, espionage, and allegiance options and all around good, fun game play then it is for you. If you can find it.

Recently I have had less and less time for games. Real life and everything y'know?
Then a guy at work got me into playing Company of Heroes online.
I play this every evening. EVERY evening - I'm not even a big RTS guy... I cant remember the last time a game gripped me like this. It may have been Fallout...? Hmmm.
The point is, after playing the demo and having to deal with a sniper by drawing his fire with one squad, then running in another and tossing a grenade in the window... I was hooked.
I have to tell you to make sure you have time/money set aside for starcraft 2 when it comes out! Till then, I agree with lots of the above posts. Just download some demos and see what you like.
I'll also join the Sins praising choir, but then again I don't play Civilization because I like to see something other than my computer screen once in a few months, so your mileage may vary.
It's old school, but it's kind of like Age of Empires but with less micromanagement but more management abilities for your kingdom. Starcraft and Warcraft just became zerg games.

Company of Heroes for the small scale but epic RTS gameplay. Lots of micro, you'll be closely managing the tactics of the battle.
Supreme Commander for the HUGE scale RTS gameplay. Very little micro, it's all about large scale strategy.
Sins of a Solar Empire for 4X gameplay that's a bit more accessible than most 4X games, and with games that span galaxies and (on the large scales) can last whole days / weeks.

Also, for a tactical-leaning fix, try Ground Control. It's good. It's also free? Haven't tried getting it, but I'm at work, maybe when I get home.
I can't vouch for Ground Control 2, never played it.
Nothing comes close to Starcraft though.
Have you played Seven Kingdoms?
