Stupid Sound drivers... or something

So, I'm becoming frustrated.

Recently a friend gave me a hand-me-down 7.1 surround sound system for my computer.

After plugging everything in, I realized I was using onboard sound, and never installed my actual sound card. So off to the internets to download some drivers for my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly. Installation finished, computer asked to restart, I let it. I got a nice Windows is starting jingle and thought 'awesome'.

However, I've yet to get anymore sound out of this computer since that single jingle. I've restarted it about 4 more times, reinstalled the drivers again, and nothing, my computer has become mute.

I've searched in the standard places, volume control, control panel>sound devices, device manager>sounds>my card.

Everything looks like it should be working, but obviously, it isn't.

Help me obi-wan kenobi, you're my only hope.

    I would do this.

    1) Uninstall your sound drivers for both on board and add on sound.

    2) go into the BIOS and disable your on board sound

    3) reinstall your sound drivers for the add on card

also make sure everything is plugged in right. if your audigy 2 is like mines the back connectors have no markings.

Thanks for the tips. I actually got it working late last night.

Despite having an Audigy 2, installing the Audigy 4 drivers seemed to have worked... go figure.

I would recommend doing what bloodr said though, when I use any kind of discrete solution I always disable the onboard chipset because there's always an issue. Onboard graphics card, disable the onboard in bios as soon as a graphics card is in, same with sound too. You can get away with it with networking though. Because modern OS' are designed with multiple network interfaces in mind. They're always flaky when it comes to multiple sound chips and multiple graphics chips (of different makes/model)

Did you load the disc that came with the audio? or just download drivers for it? I think the disc would be the best choice for installation.

Its not exactly the case anymore. Modern operating systems can deal with multiple sound hardware. (I used the line in from my onboard chipset to connect additional devices - video game consoles for example - and and played the output through the speakers connected to the sound card). But it is always good to eliminate additional trouble sources.

Creative drivers are not exactly the best - and they usually don't care about older product and the compatibility to new OS. Nothing much has changed during the introduction of the emuk architecture (Soundblaster Live! 1024 line). Thats the reason you can use Audigy drivers with different products. I believe latest driver setup contains support of all the models in the Audigy line. But even a modified "Audigy 4 only" - driver would work with an Audigy 2.
