I've decided that I really don't like the story that much. The game is pretty fun, albeit much too easy, even on hard. It's just that the story just ends sourly.
snake should have just shot himself, this whole business with big boss being alive and ocelot really being himself the whole time was just dumb.
What? That was the best thing, story-wise. The whole theme of the game is the older generation coming to terms with the way the world has changed, and making way for the newer generation. It fits perfectly.
The best way for Snake to make way for the next generation is to shoot himself and not have a magical fairy come and explain the plot.
I think by the end of the game Snake had done enough for the next generation, and he'd had such a crappy existence up to that point (accelerated aging with no cure, finding out hes a biological weapon etc etc) that shooting himself would have been a total downer. I thought it was poetic that he decided spend the rest of his life living the way he wanted to, without war, even though he knows he has less than a year left to live it.
It just seemed to end so well with him shooting himself. Then the magical fairy came in and explained stuff that would have been better left as we originally assumed it. My fiancee was mad because she cried for no reason when it turned out snake was still alive. So much of the story seems tacked on, and contrived in order to force newly introduced characters into fulfilling some destiny that was outlined in mgs1. I don't understand how my entire support team from mgs3 could all turn into total assholes.
Looking back on it, I think mgs1 could stand completely on its own with just accepting the OMG THE PRESIDENT WAS INVOLVED ending, and not having all this other business.

You know, just like every other JRPG that has someone over the age of 35 in it.
Now that i'm thinking about it, who else wanted at least one more act like Act 1 and Act 2? Act 3 and 5 were unbelievably short gameplay-wise, while Act 4 was pure brilliance and the best act in the game. But I would have liked a little bit more battlefield stuff.
I felt the exact same way. But then again, I've felt that way about all the MGS games. They always start off with some great gameplay, then get more and more on rails and cutscene heavy as they go.
The whole Liquid/Ocelot possession dealy. I know they explained it with Ocelot brainwashing himself in an elaborate ruse to trick the patriots. I kind of figured Ocelot was acting as soon as the final fight starts, he rips off his shirt, and you see that he doesn't even have liquids arm anymore. Although I suspected it as early as when he first spoke and it wasn't Liquids voice like it was when Ocelot got possessed in MGS2. I just chalked that up to a production detail or something at the time though. But still, I like to think that while he did still have Liquids arm, that Liquid was possessing him whenever Solid got too near, and that is how he got the great idea to try to trick the patriots. But maybe that's just my wishful thinking since I liked that plot point so much.
Also, I beat the game last night around 10:30 pm. I forgot it was a Kojima game for a minute and assumed that beating it by 10:30 would be plenty of time to watch the final cutscenes and shuffle off to bed in time for work tomorrow.

Well considering that it makes the whole plot point of MGS4
having snake shoot himself which IMO would be the worse way for the game to end, why would it be better for snake to commit suicide when he is going to die something like 3 months, it makes no sense for him to kill himself when he can live out the rest of his life in peace.

Well Snake was killing himself to prevent the mutated FOXDIE in him from developing into an airborne biological weapon. It was only after talking to Big Boss at the end does he find out that the FOXDIE that Drebin had injected him with was killing the old mutating Naomi FOXDIE.

Snake can't die yet, he needs to participate in one last sneaking mission ... a new Snake's Revenge.
Otacon: Snake we've found the REAL masterminds behing all your suffering through hours of gimmicky bosses, melodrama, and battling mecha with blatant, phallic weapons. Go back to 1987 and infiltrate Konami. Eliminate the enemy leaders, Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa!

It doesn't matter.
For all his suicidal talk and actions, I always got the impression that Snake deserved a chance to live and that he himself wanted the chance to, he just never thought it was possible, at least not with the Patriots and Liquid running about. In the first game hes tried to walk away from that life and been dragged back. He goes back in part because its what he knows, its what hes good at and a part of him wants to but after so many years hes learned what BB and others have learned, it doesn't really bring him anything in the end and he wants to escape that and live. Blowing his brains out would have solved the Foxdie problem but he couldn't do it because he doesn't want to die. Throughout the game hes not happy knowing how short his time left is despite then volunteering to run into a microwave hallway.

Oops! I meant Yoji Shinkawa >_<. Y'know, Kojima's right-hand mecha designer. He's designed all the Metal Gear and Z.O.E. machinery. He's also the guy who, when asked in an interview, literally said "well it is a COCK-pit" about all the Orbital Frames' enlongated groin pilot seating in Z.O.E. That, and he keeps putting guns in between Metal Gears' legs.

If you are tying to just get through the game yeah its easy... But try for no alerts... that shit is not easy.
Also Titmouse, have you played much MGS4, or did you just read the story synopsis?
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
Does setting off the alert in the MGS 1 flashback scene count towards the alerts for my no alert no kills run? Because I went through that flashback snapping necks and setting off alerts... For old times sake.

Just beat the first boss on solid normal, fun fight
The first time she hid i mustve ran past her 5 times before realising what she was doing. Octocamo is cool but the fact that she hid in the surroundings, or used her arms to mimick lab equipment was really a nice touch. That and after I'd found her I then had time to pull out my biggest gun and let rip. The ink cloud when she needed to retreat was a nice touch too. Hope the rest of the lovely ladies use their character traits this well. Cant say what she had to say afterwards or Drebin's explanation of some crazy gang executing her whole village was all that compelling, maybe its explained later?

Shot/blew her up. There was a RPG involved. But Im kinda making a point of using all the guns and getting a good feel for each of them during this run, since my 2nd and subsequent playthroughs will be the more stealthy/no kills run. If i dont blow shit up now and relish some fine semi automatic weapons at my disposal im gona feel like ive missed out some small part of the game.

Not really. It's about 2-3 hours longer. But it has two really awesome moments near the end. And an awesome final boss.

Otacon tells you that OctoCamo hels you stay undetected to the infrared/heatseeking sensors of unmanned weapons like the Gecko, but you can just switch to your solid eye NV mode to see Laughing Octopus.

I think I hugged every girl after she came out of her shell at least once just to let her know that everything's going to be ok. Then I threw her down so she could take a nap and tucked her in with a stun grenade.
Ok, amusing story time: so I'm really getting into this and it's one of the codec sections with everyone and their mother calling you. My dad comes into my room and asks "Who the hell keeps calling you?" my ringtone has been for the past few months, the codec double beep.
- The difficulty. Way too easy.
- Boss battles felt un-epic except for the final one with Liquid.
- Lack of people to call on the codec. Only two? For the whole game? Bah. Hassling people via codec was probably my favorite aspect of MGS1-3.
- The fact that it was a war game and not at all a stealth game. I mean, not really. It felt more like Gears of War to me than an infiltration game.
Does it really count as a kill if a Frog gets tranqed and falls? They disappear when they do, but even if you shoot them on the ground, they can jump onto the ceiling and then fall asleep and die. Does that count?

I was surprised that they have 3 methods of attack.
The front hug, back hug, and straddle-hump on the ground hug.

If you're not playing it like a stealth game you're probably not doing it right. You can muscle your way through most areas but it's generally much more rewarding to sneak through, since, after all, that's what the game's designed around.

Sorry, but I don't agree at all.
MGS4 is, tonally, a severe departure from the previous games. Basically, the world exploded into all out war. The war economy. War everywhere. Hell, no mention is made of "hey, Snake, wtf - go sneak through," by Otacon or anyone else, which is completely unlike the other games where they berate you as soon as you get an alert status. Alert status isn't even a big deal here. It hardly matters.
Yeah, you can sneak through (I guess? I wouldn't even know where to begin in some acts). But with the ability to purchase weapons, the addition of NPC soldiers you can fight alongside and actually take over enemy installations with, and the chaos of war going on around you at every step, plus the vast "monetary" reward you get for destroying things and from killing/knocking people out and taking their weapons, I wouldn't agree at all that stealth is the focus of this installment whatsoever. It's possible, but I think Kojima was trying to show how pervasive war is. I don't know. I felt like this game was the opposite of the others. Hell, half the time you can wander around in the open while people shoot at each other and you won't get an alert status.
Hell, Otacon specifically urges you to kill, multiple times. Not just Vamp, but PMC soldiers too, from Act I through to the end. The non-lethal/sneaking mission philosophy seemed to have been dropped. In fact, I don't think the phrase "sneaking mission" was uttered once. It was in MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3. The only exception is during the resistance part, of course. Which also lends credence to my point. They had one part of one act specifically require sneaking. That wasn't a part of any of the previous games either. I mean, sneaking was heavily suggested, but you could run around shooting people. Here, one section is a required sneaking section (similar to how Shenmue and Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit have a specific sneaking section). And it is followed by a violent motorcycle chase. The juxtaposition is telling in my opinion.
I would not call MGS4 a stealth game at all. Beyond all the above, stealth doesn't really make sense. Why bother? Considering all the plot elements, considering everything people are telling you, and considering the ambiance, stealth is not very relevant to the context.
*shrug*
Just my opinion.
As for my "not doing it right," I don't agree with that for obvious reasons - while I don't think Hideo expects you to be a bloodthirsty murderer throughout the game, I do think he wanted players to feel like they've been dropped into a war zone.

Sorry, but I don't agree at all.
I don't know what game you played, but I rarely gained an alert status of any kind throughout my first playthrough.
Also, where the hell does Otacon tell you to kill anyone other than Vamp? I don't remember this either.
It's like you played a different game.
