So I'm looking for some recommendations on pianists to listen to. I think what set me off was the Bioshock soundtrack. There's a song on it called Cohens Masterpiece. It's the kind of dark and haunting composition that, when listened to on high volume--maybe alone in the car or an otherwise isolated and quiet setting--really paints a fantastic and surreal landscape around you. At least, that's the impression I get. I really like that kind of thing. I'd love to hear some suggestions for listening, as I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to this type of music.

Hmm, try Tchaikovsky. Or for something more modern: Michael Nyman

    Chopin is incredible.

Mozart has some great piano arrangements as well.

Really, there's a wealth of piano stuff out there. Happy hunting.

Scriabin: Started off rather typically, then as his music developed, moved toward odder territory.

Early Scriabin recommendations: early etudes (the Op. 8 set, for example), early preludes (Op. 11 set), and the second, third, and fourth sonatas.
Later Scriabin: fifth, ninth, and tenth sonata

    Op. 8 No. 12 etude
    9th sonata

    Debussy: Any of the preludes.

Beethoven: The piano sonatas. The "named" sonatas (Moonlight, Tempest, Waldstein, Pathetique) are quite famous, and quite good, so they're a good place to start. Any of the later sonatas are great too; #27, 28, 31, and 32 are favorites of mine.

Chopin, Scriabin, Liszt. All are good choices.
Final Fantasy Piano collections as mentioned above are pretty good, especially if you are already into video game music.

If you're looking more for performers rather than composers, Murray Perahia, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Claudio Arrau, Artur Schnabel are all good. There's a pretty huge list on Wikipedia.

    Sorry I'm just responding now.

I've gotta say, I'm really digging just about everything that's been brought to my attention. Haven't got a hold of an Final Fantasy music yet(never played), but I'm looking into it.

    Thanks all. great stuff
