Anyway, I resolved to actually sit down and power through Megaman X6 tonight. I just... I couldn't do it. The game is that bad.
1) Commander Yammark - leaps of faith over spike pits killed me three or four times, but the boss was a joke.
2) Ground Scaravich - This stage is impossible for normal Megaman. You literally cannot beat it without the Falcon Armor. The boss is a joke.
3) Blaze Heatnix - This is where I gave up - the giant mechaniloid with four weak points, only half the screen is rising lava? Oh, and beating Yammark first causes metal flies to swarm you, and they reflect normal shots? Sorry, I'm done.
This game is just terrible, there's no way around it.
The last four X games (X6-8 and Command Mission). . .they shouldn't exist. All the classic games, Zero games, ZX games and Legends games are awesome. And so is the X series. . .up until 6. Ugh.
I have no comment on the Battle Network/Star Force games as I just didn't like the gameplay.

Those nightmares are random, and have nothing to do with beating Yanmark.
The faq I was using said they were.
In the Ground Scaravich stage, in the first area you get teleported to, no matter how many times I tried in the randomly generated area, there was always a part with a large pit and a low hanging ceiling block. You can't dash wall jump because it blocks you. How do you do this without the air dash?
The nightmare stages aren't random, they're set by whatever stage you last left. For instance, if you enter the magma stage and then leave, then it'll be the ice stage that's a nightmare version (just as an example, I don't know off hand the actual stages that are changed). You don't even have to beat the boss, just what stage you last were in.
As for that area you're having trouble with, if I remember right, the Falcon armor you start the game with has the air dash built in. You're right, the stages are laid out like shit, and I wouldn't doubt it's impossible for base X to get through. But there's really no reason to use X without any armor. Not that it's an excuse, but there ya go.

There are only two jumps that you can't handle with base X. The secret place in Shark's level, and final jump before Gate. I always used standard X over Falcon because the buster is so much wider.

Speaking of Command Mission, what's the general consensus of it? I know the X storyline is nothing really strong, but I've played Command Mission up to the end of the first chapter and thought it was a fairly fun jrpg, it's no Dragon Quest or Chrono Trigger but it's fun.
All I'm saying is, does the game start sucking big time later on? Or was it just hated because it's a later gen X game?

What I hated in X6 was playing as Zero, and traversing the areas where you need to hang on lines by pressing up. Of course, they had to make a diving, noncancellable move with Up+attack while jumping, which results in bottomless pit doom. :x
I wonder if MM9 will be 16:9. You know, if that was the only real difference between it and the other games, I'd be fine with it. But seeing as how they are really, really sticking with the 8-bit thing, I doubt it.
And my opinion on the X games - 1, 2, and 3 are gaming perfection. 4 is good. Everything after is just not worth talking about.

Oh man, I'll tell you the exact moment X6 really jumped the shark and screwed the pooch.
Sigma stage 2.
The entire first half of the level is covered in spikes, wall to wall. If you've kept your armor collecting up to date, your first thought would be "Hey! I'll use the Shadow armor! It's impervious to spikes!" So you totally breeze through the spikes. And then, when you reach the mid boss High Max, what once was an almost invicible boss is wrecked by the Shadow armor. "Dude!" you think, "This level must have been tailor made for this armor.".
Next room. Wide pit with a giant block in the middle. Impossible to cross without an air dash.
Take a guess what feature the Shadow armor is lacking.
Go on, guess.

Oh God, that too. I stopped playing X6 at the exact point and with the exact reasons.

Not exactly true. With proper enchancements, you can get Shadow armor over that gap just by jumping. But yeah, under normal circumstances, good luck. My own personal combination for Gate's fortress is:
Shadow Armor
Power Up (makes so that you always shoot fully charged shot. Turns Shadow Armor into close combat monster)
Super Jump (increases length of jump)
Super Dash (increases speed of dash)
Energy Tank (extra tank)

I got to that point with my shadow armor, tried that jump off and on for a good hour, deemed it impossible and shut the game off and haven't bought a single new mega man game since.
Just watched the footage. Don't get me wrong, I'm psyched about them keeping the 8-bit style and all, but...what they've made looks indistinguishable from the previous games, at least from what I could see in the video.
And this is a bad thing? Personally, I'm Psyched to get was is essentially the first new NES game that isn't a pirate or a homebrew since Wario's Woods in 1994....

X5 still has the hardest Devil to me. It's either use the armor made for him and have one hell of a time getting to him, or get to him the easy way and get raped repeatedly.
I wish it were being made with MM7 graphics, but hey. At least its coming out finally and I think its awesome that, in a sense, Capcom is coming full circle and going back to its roots to finish the series. I just am curious about the plot (if there will be one) and what else they might add to make it neat.
I thought X8 was a good game. Made up for the suck fest that was X6 and X7. And outside of X being emo at the start of X7, the game sucked even more because of this:

X8 deserves a pass if only for the excellent voice work.
Well, Command Mission deserves the credit for being the first game with the cast. But thank god Capcom saw that they were great and brought them back for X8 and MHX.

It would be amazing if they did a limited NES cartridge print run of this game. Instant ebay gold.
just because it has NES-style sprites does not mean that it is being coded in 6502 asm, or indeed that it could be done on the NES at all.
Agreed, however, I would bet that within a few months (maybe weeks) of the Games Wii Ware release, some enterprising Hacker will have the thing running on the NES.

Better yet - we'll see someone using the wireless NES controller mod for the Wii, running it on the NES-Wii casemod, plugged into a 20 year old TV.

Wireless? bah! NES Controllers are meant to be wired!
We are all assuming, of course, that they are going to allow Gamecube controllers to work. At this point, has it even been said if Classic controllers will work? They may just stick to the Wiimote only. Though that would suck.

So the video on GoNintendo/Joystiq has been posted?
I've gone fro "Day One" to "Second One"
Edit: I'm a bit ashamed to admit that the only original MM game I own is MM5, but my box & manual are in near-mint condition so I'm pleased.
Edit 2: And I haven't bought a PSP game in months but I seem to remember seeing Megaman Powered Up at Circuit City the other day for $10. I might swing by and grab it.
We saw way too much of SSBB before it came out and that burned me a lot on the game. I do hope this little footage is all we get of MM9 before it's available for download.

Powered Up wins hard due to the feature of letting you play the full game as any of the bosses. And Roll. And Proto Man.
If you technically count each character as a full game, that's 11 games right there.
So sad we'll never see PU2. R.I.P playable Air Man.
Can't beat Air Man!
This is nitpicking, but given how smooth the image of Mega Man rotating around his Z axis was on the real NES in Mega Man 5 (Gyro Man, Crystal Man stages), I'm rather disappointed with how choppily Mega Man goes around those tube-shaped magnet platforms in 9.

What about it? Besides looking sluggish and not very action-packed.
