Ping Pong partners

So, I just got back from China last week, where I had been studying Ping Pong. I haven't played in OVER A WEEK. I need help finding a place. I'm going to check out the Washington Table Tennis Center up in Bellevue on Monday, because it's the only place I've heard about. I know Gabe and Tycho are big fans of ping pong, and thought perhaps maybe some forum-goers would also play. I go to UW, and there are tables there, but honestly, the only people I've seen playing aren't that great. I am looking for people who love ping pong, who don't see it as a game, but see it as a sport. I'm posting here to find people, or at least find information. Are there places besides the Washington Table Tennis Center in Bellevue? If so, what are they? Is WTTC any good? I would go there hopefully daily once school starts, but definitely at least two or three times a week (depending on work in the Summer, etc), so getting a membership would probably be best. I've heard the people up there are good, and I'm hoping to play in their August championship.

So yeah, that's it, I guess I'm just looking for people who are ardent about the sport, and would be willing to get together to practice at time. I fear I'm already getting rusty not playing for a week.

Oh er, yeah, I guess I should specify that this is for people in Western Washington mainly, asking for advice at least. That was kind of stupid not to specify.

Also, I wasn't totally sure where to put this, so if it needs to be moved, please do so.

I love love love ping pong, but I just never get to play.

I practiced every single day when I was younger and around tables, and I was easily the best, but when I got to old to go to the youth center that had the tables, my dreams and hopes were crushed.

If you love ping pong, you know what it's like to really really want to play and you just can't.

I didn't know bellevue had a place like that, I'm going to look it up right now.

I absolutely love ping pong as well. I work in an R&D facility and jumped in almost as soon as I started working. It's taken me a while, but I can comfortably say that I'm pretty decent at it. I think it's mostly due to the fact that I play daily, ha ha.

I'm buying a house soon, and planning to buy a table + robot (newgy 2040).

I highly suggest you buy your own racket.

I'd also be wary about going into a table tennis club thinking you'll be competitive. Expect them to completely dominate. In Austin, there's a few players who are near olympic level.

I use to play pretty competitively around Orange County, and was on a team, but that was 5 or 6 years ago when i was young.

It's an awesome game, and I wish more people played seriously. Good luck finding opponents.

My coach was the second best in Beijing, and I wouldn't say I'm at her level, but I'm competitive. I have beat her once, when I was doing particularly well, although usually I'm 3 or 4 points behind her. I have two of my own paddles (racket is for tennis, hehe), one of which I fit for myself. Even for China, I was/am pretty decent, but that doesn't mean I'll just walk into the club and dominate. I fully expect to lose, especially since I've seen some videos of the people at this particular club on Youtube. However, they have a competition in August, and I was hoping to get my edge back (I haven't played for a week and a half now) and get back to training seriously before the competition, hopefully so I could make a decent showing.

I support you getting your own table, but be wary of robots. Some of them will dent/cut the balls, and while higher-priced ones are good for "setting" your form, they don't give the variation that will happen from playing with a human. Just be aware of the pros and cons I guess. I'd recommend a coach (if you're in an area where you can find one) more than a robot, especially if you compare the costs.

I'm sorry, I completely misread your initial statement. I thought you said you had just started playing table tennis in China, sorry. Forgive the silly advice then.

In any case, good luck getting something together in Seattle/finding someplace to play.
I usually stick with "paddle", but some people have tried correcting me and saying racket, just like some get offended if you call it ping-pong instead of table tennis.

Yeah, it's all just semantics I guess. I've just always thought of racket as something with netting, but really every person has their own preference. I call it Ping Pong because that's how it sounds in Chinese (乒乓球 ping1pang1qiu2), but I've heard a lot of people call it Table Tennis here.

Okay, just wanted to say that I will be going up to the place in Bellevue on Monday. I'll be there right when it opens, most likely, and will stay until the afternoon/evening. Apparently, there's not a lot of people that go there during the weekdays, and those who do bring their own partners. So, I'm just putting it out there that I will be there on Monday, waiting for people to show up. If anyone on this forum is in the King County area and wants to play, hit me up with a PM or just show up at the washington table tennis center (look it up for directions) on Monday anytime after 1pm. I even have a nice paddle you can use, and I'll bring the ping pong balls.

Well, do you mind playing with someone who is by no measure anywhere near as good as you probably are?

The receptionist said there probably won't be anyone there as soon as they open, so I guess anyone is better than nobody*.

    * provided you can keep the ball on the table? I can teach that much, at least. Hehe, you said you were good when you were younger, and ping pong is a sport that usually comes back fairly fast. If you show up, and there's no one else there, I'll play you. Of course, I'm going to see if I can play with the guy that opened the place, but I don't know if he'll play me.

It turns out monday won't work, but I would lie to play you sometime.

I can definitely keep it on the table.

It only goes off when I try hitting it a lot harder than I should.
