The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
The recording industry is akin to an old man in a horse and carriage going on the highway and complaining that the cars scare his horses and trying to petition to city council to ban them from the roads.

Is the RIAA manned solely by everyone's crazy, racist grandpa?
"The radio! Pshaw! The radio is the tool of the Irish and Gypsies! Makin' kids' heads soft! Why listen to the radio when you've got a perfectly serviceable Morse telegrapher to widdle the hours away!"

i've just given up on "real" music and listen to video game song remixes from VGMix or OCRemix nowadays. maybe some independent stuff i'll randomly find via MySpace or something similar.
fuck the RIAA, they're not the be all end all of music.
It's a good thing that the only thing I do that concerns music is buy a CD, take it into the store's parking lot, and burn it. Over and over again. Contributions to global warming aside, I'm pretty sure that the RIAA finds that acceptable.

you're burning a CD, which is also piracy.
you now owe the RIAA USD$500. they accept most major credit cards.

The funny thing is, when I was thinking about saying that I was going to put "set fire to it" so as to avoid the obvious pun. And yet somehow my subconscious must love setting people up.

I don't mind that there's a company out there cracking down on websites and people who spread around shit tons of bandwidth in music, I can understand the reasoning behind that.
But attacking radio like this is basically punishing everyone to make up for something that not everyone is doing. And that's never okay.

RIAA... proving daily that rich idiots will do anything to get richer.
Seriously fuck you guys.
The stuff some of these companies are doing, not just music labels, but companies that get paid through DVDs as well (Especially the anime industry) seem to be giving a harder and harder time to people who just want to get their stuff legally.
It's so fucking stupid, and all it's doing is making it more and more rewarding just to download their shit and fuck over the license holders and distributors out of even more money.
"It's a form of piracy, if you will, but not in the classic sense as we think of it," said Martin Machowsky, a musicFirst spokesman. "Today we gifted them a can of herring, about their argument that they provide promotional value. We think that's a red herring. Nobody listens to the radio for the commercials."
Are they fucking serious? Did you completely miss the point that NAB was making? The fact is that playing singles on the radio is excellent advertising for what Record Companies are selling.
I'm really all for the music industry changing to fit modern distribution, but the transistion is going to be rough. And attacking the radio? A few months back I was offered my first radio interview and airtime and I was fucking blown away. Bands put their shit on the internet all the time, but it's when it makes it to the radio that people actually take it seriously. Yeah, radio isn't perfect, but it's likely the least corrupt and bullshit way to get people to hear your music.
And keep in mind, unlike the crusade against online pirating, there's no excuse of "it's denying the artists money!" with this.
Artists do get paid royalties by radio stations(via some crazy arcane system I can't decipher). This is just the labels going "Waaaah! I want some too!"

Rabble Rabble Rabble!
Harrumph!
Because it sounds like you're just being retarded.
but yeah you know
they're effectively a cartel with a massive lobby group
"Why don't we just kill these fuckin' people?"
In all seriousness, they...just don't belong in this time period.
Not listening to music is also a form of pirating music.
so long as you give them money
are you thinking about music? that counts too
fuck the RIAA, they're not the be all end all of music.

Hot Toddy?
The way it works is, you hear a song, and you're like that song was fucking great
So you go out and buy the album and it sucks

actually it's now more like "hey that song is awesome i think i'll buy the single off iTunes for $ .99!"
*listen to samples of rest of album*
"wow, the rest blows. i'm just getting the one song then."
