Funky laptop startup problem

K, so I had those bookmark problems earlier and today I'm helping my sister with a weird laptop problem. When you press the power button it lights up and the power LED also lights up, but the hard drive LED never turns on and and 10 seconds later it shuts off without ever even attempting to boot up or even power up all the way. WTF happened? We've tried this both on just battery or plugged in it makes no difference, it shuts down before the screen even lights up.

I would like to put something clever and about me but I fear my company will find it

    Try pulling the battery and then plugging it in and turning it on.

    no dice had no effect. the light came on and a couple seconds later it shut off and the hard drive light never came on.

    If your not seeing it POST then it's not the hard drive thats the problem. It could be CPU RAM or Motherboard. Bad bios are a possibility but I honestly have no idea how to go about resetting them on a laptop.

    Tech support from whatever company you got it from will most likely prove to be the most expedited way to solve this problem.
