The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Brian Brinegar, Dan May, and John Groth are three former college roommates who plan on spending the next fifty-five hours playing through seven different Mario games in their entirety. That's Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3, Super Mario World, Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Three gamers, seven games, fifty-five hours, all for the sake of the children. The trio is broadcasting their Super Mario Marathon live all weekend via UStreamTV, kicking off at 3PM Eastern and going until all the games are completed or they go crazy and turn on each other. I spent some time last night chatting with the guys, who have a lovely recliner and a friendly dog. I warn you...don't expect them to be good at this. These aren't speed runs. Just a group of friends showing you a good time for a good cause.
Sounds like good time, and I figured I might as well get you folks involved if you already haven't heard about it! I've put my $20 in, so feel free to follow suit.
Honest question: How/why does this [ever] work? Why do we care that people are playing Mario?
My question isn't related to the money that is/isn't going to charity, but the method used to coerce people into giving it up... in the same manner, I never understood why people/adults cared that kids jumped roped or whatever x hundred times in y days in elementary school.
(edit: I ask this now because I swear there's one of these every month or every other month and I don't understand :P)
Gabe did comment on this as well on the main page. Not that would change any of your guys' opinions of course, but just saying it has his blessing.
The cynic in me says he only mentioned it because it's for Child's Play.
There have been other marathons for other charities and what I really want to know is why people think that it's a good reason (a good excuse?) to give money to charities.
(Shurakai, I hope you don't feel like I'm putting you on the spot or whatever, it just so happened your donate-to-a-marathon topic was the one I chose to ask this in :P)
"Heeeyyy!!!! Look at us!! We are doing silly and game related!!! Weeeeee!!!! Also, since you are all gamers who are watching this, go an donate to a charity that relates to your favorite hobby and helps kids"
Grabs the attention of gamers by doing something outlandish then directs them to a charity cause that they might be interested in.

People doing crazy/dumb shit for charity is only to get dumb people to give their money to said charity.
Intelligent people who ask "Why do they do this?" have already donated to that charity.

I don't understand why there is a "goal".
Just donate however much you want and give it all to charity.
What's the point of a "goal"? Is it a way of saying "Please donate,we are only so and so amount away,it's not much."?

they're so dumb that they've raised $5000 in a very easy way. what the fuck is wrong with that? as in... are you people being serious?

Well after 1 hour and over 20 deaths they finally beat the last bowser in Mario 64. And now they move on with Mario Sunshine and 2200 viewers and raised their goal to 8000... Guess goals make people want to donate more.
To all those asking: "Why play games for charity? I don't get it plz halp"
I ask you another question: "Why shave your head? Why go on a run? Why wheel your wheelchair across a continent? Why do any number of things for charity?"
There's a very simple answer here folks, and it's simply that it's a way to get attention. Playing a marathon of games for attention is no more or less valid than running across a country for attention.

I prefer my fundraisers to have better ethics personally.
Like, instead of doing what you would essentially have done normally and slapping a 'donate' button on the side maybe actually actively seek to do some real immediate good.
But of course ends justify means right? Yeah...
I'm not knocking them for raising charity money. Well played.
Im knocking them for being unimaginative and doing what people have been doing since the dawn of fucking time. Telethonning their lives.

This is like; what anyone of us would do in their free time... And, then go to work, make money, and donate some of it.

Twice.
Clearly I'm not the targeted demographic.
This is like what, the 4th time around this year?

yeah, that's exactly what it is.
But hell, they're making money for charity, so that's cool.

That's how I feel. Well, as least they made some money for CP.
