I hate the 'too short' complaint when it comes to portable games. I've got too many games as it is, so I'd rather a game be really good and short than mediocre and 35 hours long.
So at this point I'd say the consensus is it's pretty damned good, at least for a system currently really lacking in RPGs. It appears to have all the personality and originality we expect it to - only serious complaints about it I've read are the somewhat hands-off combat system and the short length.
7.0/7.5/8.0 from EGM. Complaints were it was too short (15 hours or so), some missions were a little vague, and one reviewer thought the combat wasn't interactive enough. All were generally positive though.
Hooray! :^:
I don't have 100 continuous hours to sink into a game anymore, so that's good stuff. As long as the story is entertaining.
Man, there's just too much awesome going on for the DS lately. I wonder if the Wii is going to be this hard on the wallets in Wii-Day + 1.5 years.

In there defense, 15 hours is short for an RPG, portable or no.
I was a little unnerved though because my EB used to have a cool floormat with Contact on it and when I went into the look today no sign of the game and the mat was gone. I blame pod people.

Rocket slime was 15 at most, and I loved me some rocket slime.

marketing just changed over. I susepct it will keep changing somewhat rapidly the closer we get to christmas.

Rocket slime had two strickes against it..length and it was easy...and it was STILL an amazing game.
Upon further inquiry at Best Buy (and I actually talked to a guy who works in inventory this time), I am told that they won't receive any copies until the 24th. This is the same date amazon.com has. The fact that these dates coincide worries me. Has anyone managed to pick it up yet?

Still waiting on my Amazon preorder. I was apparantly supposed to confirm something by the 10th, but just found out about it and took care of it today. Better not have any repurcussions...

They cancelled mine. I'll pick it up this weekend at my local store, barring a barrage of bad reviews.
You guys need to trust me when I say its too short. Its like... the story gets better and better and better, and then it ends, and its kinda like... I dunno. Play it for yourself! Its still good!

We'd love to play it for ourselves, but apparently we can't until tomorrow. Or Friday. Or Monday.

If the ending is too abrupt that's one thing, but I wouldn't call 15 hours too short.
I like short games. I actually manage to finish them most of the time.
Unless a game has a lot of replay value, a 15 hour game isn't worth 35-50 dollars to me.
On the other hand, this is an Atlus title.
If you don't get it now, you could be paying out the rear later on.
I'll probably get this, but I am going to wait for reviews from "real" people.
I don't know what your monetary situation is like, but $35 for a DS game that last 15 hours seems like a good deal. In one day I could see a movie and go to dinner paying for my fiancee as well which adds up to well over $60 for a two hour movie and a meal. Not including the casual sex I'd say the video game is a better value.
Hope I find a copy without a pre-order since this looks like it might be rare. rowr.

Unless a game has a lot of replay value, a 15 hour game isn't worth 35-50 dollars to me.
Luckily, most 15 hour long games I've played have had enough content to replay 3 or 4 times which was worth it.
Value is completely subjective, so I am not arguing with you, but I am curious as to why a 15 hour game isn't worth 35-50 dollars. Most games, like 80% of them, are only 6-10 hours in length and 75% of these cost 40-50 dollars.
Also, a movie is usually 1.5 to 2.5 hours in length, and a DVD costs 15-25 dollars. Considering the media length-to-cost ratio of a DVD and comparing that to the ML-to-cost ratio of a 15 hour game, isn't the value much higher overall?
Length means nothing, it's how the pacing is dealt with.
Phoenix Wright had five cases. I was bummed, thinking it would be short. But when Case Five came to a close, I felt more than satisified. I have no idea how long I actually played, but it seemed just about right. While I certainly wanted more (a feeling any good game should invoke), I didn't feel shortchanged in the least.
Compare this to the New Super Mario Bros, which felt a bit lacking by the time I finished. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but I felt like it wasn't enough.

If the games cost ten bucks a pop, I'd agree with you.
When I'm paying upwards of thirty dollars, though, I'd like to get more than a week's worth of play out of a game.

My value system is very simple. 1 dollar = 1 hour of enjoyment. So if it costs me 50 dollars, I expect to enjoy the game for at least 50 hours.
I don't require 50 hours of ORIGINAL content, but the content that is there will have to be made in such a way that I can replay it.
Okami was a good value at 40 dollars as it took me ~50 to beat it. Sadly I can't find the desire to replay it (yet) so maybe I'll get even more value out of it.

But yes, it is different for everyone.
Very few things in the entertainment industry follow that pricing model. So, you either don't purchase a lot of games or you feel cheated often?
By the by, have you ever gotten a lapdance? That's like 20 bucks for 2 minutes!

Depends how memorable the lapdance is. I mean, if every minute you THINK about it afterwards counts towards its entertainment value, you might reach a much more satisfactory ratio.
But yes, that $1 = 1 hour rule does seem a bit unrealistic. I don't think I get that out of most of the things I buy.
The search goes on! My GameStop dude said it should be in at 2 p.m., but I'm not holding my breath. Nintendo World said they won't have it until Friday or Monday.
As far as length, less really is more nowadays. Games like Prince of Persia, Beyond Good & Evil and (the little-bit-longer) Resident Evil 4 were all completely stellar titles that I felt great about. The pacing is far more important than the actual length. Oh, wait:
Seriously, this is just pissing me off. If atlus doesn't get their act straight I'm just going to buy another title instead. Bully and Clubhouse games want my money too and they are right there, sitting pretty on the shelfs.
"Oh you won't be able to find the game in two weeks". Well too bad for atlus. Another guaranteed sale lost.

Clearly, you've never bought an Atlus title before. The hunt for the title is part of the game itself.
Chill out. It'll be available in a few days, if not today. I'd be much quicker to blame EBStop than Atlus, anyway.

So, if I go to EB will I be walking out with a copy of this game or what?

No, not really. I buy RPGs (and a few other non-RPGs) and rent anything else. Or wait until it lowers in price.
Dr Mario Kart - Movies are only 5 dollars here, and I can (easily) stomach 5 dollars for 2 hours. Then again, I rarely see movies I really want to see.
The Oct. 20th release date conviniently coincides with the TRU buy 2 get one free promo methinks.
Assuming you can find a TRU with one next week. I'd love for it to happen, and I'm keeping my eyes out for it if it does, but I'm not holding my breath for this and Touch Detective (the two Atlus titles I'm coveting) to be available there.
So, if I go to EB will I be walking out with a copy of this game or what?
