It actually looks like a slight exaggerated natural progression for SC, for Diablo it doesn't.
Why make it not look like D1/2? What to they get from it being more colourful? Also, concept aret isn't a good way to judge the looks of stuff especially so when a lot of concept art for Diablo seems to have exaggerated gear size yet in the game, not so much.

No matter what, when D3 comes out, I will play the shit out of it, but looking at those Environment Suggestions, I like what they've done with some of them.

Of course, I'm tempted to go pre-order D3 tomorrow despite knowing it won't be out for some time. Does Blizzard generally do good Collector's Editions?
If some random Internet people can quickly modify some images surely Blizzard could change the game to be more true to Diablo.

The same thing they'd get if they did it all dark and gothic; nothing. The game is going to sell eight billion copies anyway, so why shouldn't they stick to an art style they prefer? And shit, somehow I doubt every single area in the game is going to be full of rainbows. Perhaps they're going for a bit of a contrast between early and later areas, rather than having the entire world be drab?
The assumptions people make based on 19 minutes of gameplay make me laugh. The level of nerd rage it's generating will keep me entertained probably until Diablo III's release.
Edit: Blizzard makes some fuck-awesome collector's editions. The Burning Crusade came with a disturbing number of extras. The ridiculously big artbook (200+ BIG pages) was worth the extra price alone...

The screenshots and video we've seen are just a bit shy of concept art. It's not anywhere close to being final, as far as we know.
Plus, one would expect the early levels to be slightly brighter and more colorful. It ain't going to look anywhere near that for the final boss. This is Blizzard we're talking about here. ;-)

I agree completely with this. I mentioned it earlier in the thread:
What if one of the reasons the world looks...less dark/evil...is because its the start of the game, and youre just fighting things that are more "natural" to the world (the goat men for example). Like the evil stuff really isn't around yet.
I'm fine and happy with how the art looks so far though, and have no doubt that it will only get better as the game progresses.
But that being said, I do have to admit that this looks good too:
Edit: also, anyone else notice that they took the artwork movie off the main site?
It just went from natural looking to night time raining and grungy as hell. I mean it is to Diablo 2's style but I think it'll start looking like that later on in the game.
Yeah I think that one went too far, it is supposed to be day time at the least, Diablo 2 had decent lighting in day time areas aswell, so no reason to make it rainy nighttime.

Dark and gothic would not be nothing, it'd do well for the atmosphere, it'd be in line with the previous 2 games, etc.
I think you could put up a screenshot of Diablo II and these idiots could go to town "grunging" it up to how it should be. People seem to forget really quick how fluorescent and saturated diablo II's graphics could be. Every single one of those "how it should be" pictures just makes the game look like Gears of War.
There also seems to be a certain level of complete obliviousness to the technical factors involved, namely that every single fucking monster and environment in Diablo II was pre-rendered with absolutely no need for considering reasonable limits on poly counts and detail.
Look at the floors and walls in this picture. Practically every surface is covered with jigsaw-puzzle-like texturing. Imagine trying to recreate this level of geometric complexity in a true 3D engine. You would be insane to do it with actual geometry, so your only feasible option is heavy reliance on normal mapping to create the illusion of intricate geometry. Heavy reliance on relatively high-cost graphical effects like pixel-shader slathered environments is completely contrary to how Blizzard builds their games.
Also take note of how goddamn bright and colorful this bossfight is. Definitely does not look like Diablo!
This is the most ridiculous argument on both sides. The amount of ever increasingly preposterous 'evidence' is so pointless. There has been so little actual discussion about skills and whatnot, hell I think the Barbarian has gotten less words than the stupid colour war.

Gears of War looked good, it's pretty safe to say grungy graphics look shitty now; it's in.

I agree, they should fix this in D3.

This being my first post in this thread, I would like to make it clear that I always thought of the graphics and story of the Diablo games to be an aside to the gameplay. So really, I won't have beef with Blizz if they keep it the way it is.

I'm working myself into a frenzy of excitement, and not even the 2 year wait for this game is sobering me up.
I read about the suppposed two year wait for Diablo 3 a few times now. Is there any validity to this or are we just going off of the Diablo 2 Development/Teaser cycle?
Please god just tell me this is just idle pessimism, I don't want to wait for two years.

This is something we've only vaguely touched upon here but some people are apparently really upset over the D3s artistic direction. Over at petitiononline.com they've even started a petition called Renewed artistic direction for Diablo 3. The petition is a protest against... well I'll just paste what they're saying.

Edit: On their page there's also a lot of argument back and forth on what it should be like and I have to say their "Environment suggestions" really does make sense.
I think the game looks very good graphically. Screenshots don't really do it justice, it's one of those things that looks better in motion, so check out the video clips.

I really hope they don't take the beautiful, eerie creepy-daylight look and turn it into generic muddled brown gloom. I'd rather see them fine tune the look their going for then toss it entirely for that crappy Gears of War ripoff look.
Am I the only person who is completely stoked about the physics engine? It's going to be like Titan Quest, but actually fun. Holy shit my nipples are so hard right now.

I thought I had put Diablo II to rest after a serious off and on addiction. I swore to myself that I would never touch it again. I thought I was safe. Then I saw the new gamplay demo for III...

Are you saying TQ wasn't fun?
Pretty much exactly, yes. It was fun for about 3 hours. Then I installed D2 and played that instead.

I don't...I don't get it. Never a bad time for D2, but shit...I can't even begin to wrap my head around a Diablo fan not enjoying TQ.

Will we finally go to Heaven and kick some holy ass?
Or will we have to, I dunno, liberate Heaven cause Diablo and his lackeys attacked it?

Wall of Zombies!
That part of the trailer was completely awesome.
"You may have heard of walls of fire... but what about... walls of... ZOMBIEEEEE!!!"
Least, that's how I remember it.
And the awesome lawnmower way the zombies chewed through the bad dudes.

Clearly others do not.
Just throwing that out there

Games need BLUE SKIES! Games need BRIGHT YELLOW SUNS! Games need RED AND BLUE THINGS in them! We want to play in a HAPPY PRETEND LAND, not a shit version of an American slum full of mixed-race gangsters wearing licensed sportswear!
I don't give a shit what the game looks like. I want the skill system and the gameplay that was on offer.
They could make it flashing technicolor I'd still play it.
That whole list is like watching wailing infants wanting the red toy not the blue toy. Ridiculous.
Are you somehow implying that the blue toy is as good as the red toy?
Because I don't think that's an argument you want to be making.
I'll be back when there's something new to discuss.
