I'm thinking about taking a flight from Dayton, OH to Orlando, FL to hang out with my buddy. Looking at the prices it's about $190 for AirTran and the next step up is $320.
Does anyone have any experience with AirTran? Is it one of those small ass planes that shake at the smallest thing? I get kinda nervous on those. For what it's worth it says that the plane TO Orlando is a Boeing 737, and from Orlando it's a 717.
The 737 and 717 are both pretty standard planes. They're not huge, but they're not the pencil-with-wings you seem to be thinking of. I've flown on a 737 in the past and found it perfectly fine.

On that, I have no idea. I've never flown outside of Europe. But I would definitely recommend that you do carry on anything you're worried about breaking or losing.

I have flown AirTran quite a few times from Philly to Ft. Lauderdale. They have been fine and are pretty much like every other domestic airline these days. The 717 is a bit smaller than the 737, but you wont feel like you are on a small plane. You probably wont even notice except for the seat configuration.
As for taking your 360 in your carry-on...I cant say. I'd probably check it just because of the potential hassle of taking a larger bit of electronic equipment with you through security that you cannot turn on.

The last time I flew from knoxville to boston the guy in front of me was bringing his 360 packed up in the box with him and airport security was breaking his balls about it. He loudly complained it happened every time he took it with him on a flight. He wasn't checking it he was carrying it on. I've never traveled with a piece of electronics that large but it did stick out in my mind when I read this thread. Anecdotal for sure so YMMV but take it into consideration.
Yeah my friend came up a few months ago and brought his 360 through his carry-on, and didn't seem to have a problem (and it's a tall hispanic scary looking dude) so I shouldn't have a problem with that. I'll be bringing my games in there too, because they went through his luggage.
I think I found a better deal with Southwest. Opinions on them? Yay? Nay?

The only reason Southwest is cheaper is because they locked in their 2008 fuel supply at something like $51/barrel. I can't say about their customer service however.

Just go with whoever is cheapest or fits your schedule best. They really are all the same these days (domestic flights anyway). With Southwest just try to get into group A for seating because having to fight for overhead space can be a pain in the ass.

I'd recommend bringing it as carry-on. I've traveled with mine as carry-on when flying post-9/11, and didn't have any problems running it through the x-ray. However, I did fly this weekend (although sans 360), and the airports I visted had new signage indicating that the TSA was requiring large electronics (video game systems were specifically mentioned) be x-rayed outside of any baggage, as they do for laptops. So make sure that whatever you're carrying it in allows you to get just the console out and into the platic bin as a separate item easily. Keep in mind though that the smaller aircraft have significantly smaller overhead storage, so a large bag isn't better (and you don't often get to choose the make, model, or size of the aircraft). I have the MadCatz 360 backpack, and I found it worked really well for this situation, as well as had a little extra room to carry my Zune, sunglasses, and a small book - it should fit in most aircraft's overhead.
If you do choose to pack it in you checked baggage, I'd make sure you pack it extremely well, and a hard-sided bag is best. Keep in mind that they're not kind wih luggage. It will be exposed to crushing and significant drops and jolts that really aren't good for the 360 (or it's hard drive). Even the original box is probably not sufficient to stand up to the more abusive baggage handlers.
Another tactic is to bring luggage that's a little too big for the overhead, but still small enough to carry through x-ray. You can then gate-check the bag, and those tend to get treated more gently (they're loaded last, by hand, and taken off first and returned to you at the jetway when you get off).
Be aware that a lot of airlines have instituted new rules where they'll charge you extra (seems to range quite widely) for checking a second bag, in addition to overweight bags. You can still have 1 carry-on, a "personal item" (like a purse), and 1 checked bag. You want to check another bag, it's on average another $50 per additional bag, plus any overweight fees, again per-bag. If you travel heavy, you can end up paying beaucoup bucks at check-in.
Very good information, thank you darkgrue. I will be only bringing my backpack (school backpack) and putting my 360 and games in it. Maybe my PSP/DS (whichever I feel like bringing) and that's about it. I'm pretty sure that thing will set in the overhead or underneath my seat (they still allow that right?).

I've flown AirTran a number of times to a number of different places, and I've always found them easy to work with. Their flights are cheap if cramped, but really these days cheap is the main thing. I'm not sure if they still do this, but they actually just GIVE you headphones for free when you board the plane, and you can take them home if you want to.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
AirTran is notorious for their delays. If you're flying anywhere with them make sure you budget for at least an hour delay in both directions. I used to use AirTran but I fly Delta now instead. You can carry your XBox on, just treat it likes it's a laptop in regards to getting through security, take it out of its case and put it in its own bin when going through the x-ray.
I don't know if you're looking at websites or the airlines themselves. I know that I use expedia and cheapoair to buy plane tickets and I've gotten some dirt cheap airfare that way.

Good customer service, inexpensive no-frills flights, limited destinations. I'm a big fan, regardless of that last point.
Also, if you're going to bring your XBox360 as a carry-on, you're probably going to have to stow it in the overhead, and that definitely means trying to get into group A or group B for boarding, like the man said earlier. Overhead bin space fills up quickly, and you may be SOL if you're in group C on a crowded flight. Usually when I fly with them I just have one small carry-on that can go under the seat in front of me, but a 360 may not fit if you have a lot of other stuff in your backpack.
edit: Also, Southwest uses only 737s, if that matters.
737s are great, and that matters alot. Thanks Sith.
Vision -> I just looked at both expedia and cheapoair and both were slightly more expensive than Southwest. The only downside to Southwest is that I have to drive to Columbus, but that's about an hour drive at most.
ceres -> Yeah? From what I heard (talked with another friend) they are pretty well crowded because of the price. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing... If you make your flights cheap, you get more customers... More bang for the buck.
i can't stand southwest, but maybe since the whole rushing for a spot in line ot get a seat is kind of ridiculous. for a while the price was not worth the extra hassle, it was a budget airline for an expensive price.
for me paying a little extra now for an airline i like is worth it for me. especially since my wife knocks herself out with drugs and i am left to entertain myself as i can't really sleep on airplanes
Well it's a 2 hour flight, and I'll bring my DS. August 21-30 doesn't seem like it'll be that crowded. Total was $230 for both ways, which wasn't bad at all.
I prefer Delta, but not $100 prefer, you know? :P Hopefully this goes smoothly. I don't know why I'm scared to fly now... I used to fly ALL the time when I was younger.

However, they are the definition of no-frills flying. Don't expect anything more than 2 wings, a pilot and a seat somewhere on the aircraft.
And yes, if you can fit it and security lets you through, carry-on the 360.
