Question to the wise: Is there a control scheme that avoids the use of shoulder buttons? Mine are broken...
Um... I think you'll be fucked in at least two places. Everywhere else that you see a shoulder button press, you can just use the touchscreen.
There are two points in the game where you have to enter "passwords" that involve a button sequence. Both use at least one shoulder button.
Better call up Nintendo to see what it would cost to fix.
Bugger. But thanks.
They work if I keep hammering them, so are those bits timed? Otherwise I could squeeze through.
I've got a Japanese Import DS so I doubt they'll fix it, but I should chance my arm...
You'll think I'm crazy, but have you tried blowing into the buttons? Put your lips up to one buttons (you want to form as good a seal as you can) and blow like it's 1985 and Super Mario Bros won't start. My L trigger had the same problem, and every time I did that it would magically work perfectly for five minutes. After doing that regularly for a few months, my L button is now completely fixed.
I am almost done with the Lost Sanctum. Wow, it's bad, it's very very bad. Seriously, turning the coolest feature of the game into a gimmick for the sake of adding a few hours to the game? Thanks a lot Square.
That whole fetch quest trough timelines thing just turn the game incredibly tedious. There is not a single bit of interesting added lore. I won't talk about the other dungeon because i haven't tried it, but...
I pretty much decided that the lost sanctum wasn't worth it from what you guys have said. I was never able to do this as a kid, and still have trouble now, but how do I kill the eye thing with 5 flames around it in the sun temple in 2300 AD? I know I could go look at GameFAQS but I like you guys.

Have your people use physical attacks against the five flames until you find the one that, when you hit it, causes damage to the center. Then focus all your attacks on that one. It will use its roulette ability to mix them up again, so hit them all til you find that one again and repeat.
It also helps to have fire resist/immune gear if you are having trouble staying alive.
I just finished the entire Lost Sanctum segment other than finding that lumicite shard for the armor, and I will never do it ever again. Someone needs to count how many times you go up and down that damn mountain because seriously, it is absurd.

I believe it is a minimum of 23 times up and down Emerald Mountain, but it may be more if you mess up the "favorite food from the past" part, or aren't using a walkthrough and aren't sure where to go. I don't get how they thought that was a good idea.
Some badguys in the first dungeon attacked me for stealing their Bromide. I see no item in my menu. Was this some kind of gag?
In Japan, a bromide refers to an idol card. Kind of like a cute or sexy picture of a celebrity. The joke payoff comes later when you find out what the bromide is actually of, if memory serves.
Also, check your Special Items menu, the one at the end. I think it should be listed there with the other key items.
Black Omen demolished. I'm saved and ready for the final battle. Whoo!
I always make sure to demolish the Black Omen in 2300 AD first, then 1000, then 600 and so on. More TP, more items.
Yeah, I don't feel like running it multiple times right now. Especially since doing Lost Sanctum seems to have overleveled me a bit (updownupdownlol), and I'd like Lavos to be at least a bit of a challenge before I hit New Game +.

Ha, your anything but crazy. That kept them working for a good few months, but now they are dead. V good tip though, cheers!

Heh. When I played this game as a kid, the only party I've ever beat Lavos with (I might've deviated once or twice.) was Crono, Ayla, and Marle. Crono and Ayla's Falcon Hit was an awesome movie, and then Marle's heals pretty much kept everyone alive.
Somewhere I found out about a Lucca+Robo double tech that did crazy radial damage. Set up your party so they hit the right bit, and Lavos is toast. So my power-finish party was Crono Lucca Robo. Robo is the best anyways. Healing wave heals enough without him being a total wuss like Marle.

I always have Chrono, Lucca and Marle especially for Antipode 3.
ATM, I'm rolling with Chrono, Frog, and Magus. Chrono and Frog rock the Attack command, Magus sports the Gold Stud and spams Dark Matter, and frog breaks away to Heal or Cure 2 as needed.

There is actually a neat trick you can use on this one - Have Magus use Black hole (I hope thats the same name of the tech still) and it will take out the two flames closest to your party - now you only have 3 flames to work with instead of 5.
I remember always having Crono and Ayla for the final Lavos battle, because... whatever that horizontal line dual-tech is called... always did full damage to the right bit regardless of protection. Made the fight basically an instant win
Lave - You could always get it, and borrow someone elses DS just to get past the two bits that require the shoulder buttons. Once your save is past those two bits, you should be fine.
I'm trying to think of where you need L & R. The only time I can think of that it's required is in the future in Arris(?) Dome. You have to hold both buttons at the same time and press A to open a particular passage. The only other time I can think of is
When Lucca goes back in time to stop Taban's machine from crippling her mother.
. That is timed, but if you fail to enter the code correctly it's not like anything really significant will be affected. All that changes is a little bit of the ending. Is there anywhere else I'm forgetting?

Man, did Magus ever kick my ass hard. Took me like 6 tries to get past him.
And it's always tragic when he's powered down for joining your party.

If he wasn't, then you would just tear through the rest of the game.
You're thinking of Falcon Strike, Ledneh. Whenever I use it, I get the urge to yell it out.
"FALLLLLLCOOOOOOOOON.... STRIIIIIIIIKEEEE!!!"

So, Dimensional Vortex:
I rolled through it in 1000 AD. There was some random areas from the game, a lava cave with semi-weak enemies, and a pretty good crown. I kicked Dalton's ass, the bit about Porre was neat (lol cross lol), and then fought the Steel Clone. Makes me kinda regret maxing out Crono's Speed and Strength already... Oh well.
After I beat it, I was dumped back to the world map. I assume you have to go through it in each time period?

One of them is. Hammer fast, good sir.

Yeah, it's not actually an item that you actually get in your inventory ever. It's just something to start an encounter.
And maybe it comes into play later on in the game as a very very small side-thing. I wouldn't call it a running gag, but it's a gag, yeah.
Edit: I like Idol's explanation better. And I might be totally wrong about the 'never in inventory" thing, too.

It's also serious overkill and very boring.
The Black Omen is probably the worst dungeon in the game.
I love the Black Omen.
Okay, I've always wondered this. How do you get into the Black Omen in 2300 AD? it's always been locked for me.
If the president had any real power, he'd be able to live wherever the fuck he wanted.
One is godawful, the other is good

It's working out really well so far.
