People can be unrivaled cunts when it comes to this kind of stuff, Kate.
Just because I feel grief differently doesn't mean I'll judge someone for being emotional longer than myself.
Hell, even expecting that is extremely selfish and insensitive.

I don't think the person who said that meant any disrespect to US.
He's a pretty stand up dude and knew Zonky was a great guy.
I personally don't see the harm in someone who didn't know him saying they were sorry for his loss.
I don't need to know someone to be sorry for their loss, particularly when it affects friends of mine.
I think he was just saying some people might have been clamoring aboard the sympathy train for attention. But really, that isn't important. Zonky was a rad dude and I don't care whether someone knew him or not to agree it's shame he is gone.

Yeah, I know the obituary doesn't say a whole lot about him but I'll let people know if there's anything else - families often post thank you's and the such afterwards.
Also, I forgot to post a link to the hospital where they suggested donations - The Janeway . . . which just reminds me that we once talked about trying to do something with Child's Play there a few years back but nothing came of it at the time.
Anyway, Zonk and I lived in the same city and went to the same school until we both left back in 2005 (and, it turns out, we had a couple of mutual friends). I only met him in person once though, and that is something I will seriously regret for a long time.

If you want to leave a message for the family to express your condolences, you might want to see if the funeral home has an obituary page on their website where they'll let you leave comments.
My mom died last month and I was sent a message of condolence by an old friend I haven't seen since high school through the funeral home's web page. Seems like an appropriate way for his forum friends to tell the family how much he meant to them without the formality of cards and flowers.
I didn't know Zonkytonk - I'm just a lurker - but I thought I'd post this info in case it's useful. I'm really sorry for all of your loss.

god, every time I see that fruit fucker in someone's sig a little part of me hopes Zonk will post
this in no way should be construed as a request to remove them
I know exactly how you feel, Dru.
My heart skips a little very time I see his av. That's one of the reasons I'm glad that the sig Rank made me doesn't look like his avatar.
I don't mind that some people have it in their sig. On the one hand, sure it's sad to be reminded that he's gone for good but it also makes me giggle a little. It's bittersweet, and I'm ok with that.
also, there is a link to the funeral home in the op and on his obit page on the funeral home's site they also suggest donations in his name to Janeway's Children's Hospital
so that's an alternative to sending flowers that may be more meaningful for some

Wake is on the 19th, for sure. Vancouver, BC. I have a lot of room in my house - if you bring something soft to sleep on and sleeping bags/pillows, you can crash here regardless. Will be cramped after 5 or so people, but, we'll do what we can.
If you have suggestions for it, please PM me and let me know. Sarah is really busy with everything so I think I'm going to be taking care of it now.

I'll try to make it to the memorial, but it's really up in the air for me. I may be starting a new job very soon and may end up having to work weekends. But if I can make it, I will.
As in, people can ride with me. My car gets about 36 mpg highway (that's what I get going to Portland, anyhow), and isn't too terribly cramped in back (I fit there).

I hate to be a bearer of bad tidings but you guys without passports might want to look up the Canadian Customs website. They told me when I last crossed at Niagra that after June 30th they would be mandatory.

I think I dealt with the anger pretty well. Luckily I have martial arts tonight so I can get out a lot of my frustrations.
Shit didn't need to happen this way. It's fucking unfair and if there is a god this just makes me want to walk up and kick him in the balls.

The newspaper article that was first linked in the previous thread mentioned that the RCMP were looking for witnesses.

Looking it up now.
