Played earlier today with only a few people and it became a melee-only affair. I've found that I'm pretty good in melee. Damn good. I killed Green Power Ranger so many times with crit shovel attacks that he eventually accused me of hacking or cheating in some way. So, that's a first for me.
That is so weird, I just started to read that book again 5 minutes ago. (Your title. :P)
You mean Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or is there a book entitled 'This must be a thursday'?
A new record for Stalin tonight on Jon's! 27 kills on one life.
I think Heavy is my class.
Damn you and your hiding in the window at the start of that map! Until I got auto-switched over, I felt so futile franticly changing classes trying to find some way to get by you or the sentry. :-(

And Assinisdspodsaij I can't spell so that what it is. When you fell out the hole I tried to rocket jump into, I almost died of a heart attack.
That was pretty funny. I thought you were just running by when suddenly you point at the ground and I'm all "oh no fucking way". If I wasn't playing no-scope sniper I might have been able to kill you with that sneak attack.
That said, no-scope is so goddamn hard, but Flippy has admitted that I am a better sniper than him.
man flippy i dont even know how you just ran around that corner without knowing the sentry was there, headshotted the engineer, and didnt even get shot by the sentry.
that was srsly pretty
like, I barely registered that the sentry was there and you had already shot the engy's face in.
Without wanting to sound like a dick I was sort of surprised at your surprise. I figured that was a pretty standard short range kill on a static target.
I figure you must have corrected yourself quickly in order to kill him, though. I didn't seem him or the sentry behind the corner, so I thought you would have been aiming off beyond him and would have made a twitch of inhuman ability to take him out that fast.
I don't play twitch classes and don't have an especially good reaction time so maybe that's it.

It becomes easier when you adopt the tactic I use, which is to stay unscoped most of the time. Hit them with the middle of your screen and zoom and it'll take just the smallest of twitches to re-adjust to the head.
@ Enders, you don't scare me. This time I do mean to sound like a dick. You will be driven from this city mocked and in rags.
e: So you know, my kill/headshot ratio is about .7

The spy needs more ridiculous abilities like running around in a box or disguising as dispensers.
If I'm going to die to the slightest thing I'd like to have obnoxious luls while still alive.
One time, on Dustbowl stage 3 offense I was on a losing team. Which means a ~22 minute match. For some reason, my World Traveler stats got erased, and being stupid I chose to re-get Sniper for that map.
Twenty two minutes. Two, yes TWO headshots. I am the best sniper ever, and there is the proof. Although one of the headshots was Tyrannus mid rocket jump, so I feel the time was well spent.

Man, just last night I had one of my worst sessions, and tonight I had one of my best. Couldn't have done it without those ubers, though. As always, great medic work on PA.
obligatory screendump:
Why so serious?
Tell me, doctor, where does it hurt?
Content to settle differences, a heavy and a pyro share a fiery embrace.
Trick E. Dickie holds only contempt in his heart for the likes of me ;_;
Murrffmmrrmmm!
This pyro would axe me...if only he could get rid of his hangover.
Yeah, so unlike Demoman, I actually appear to be getting better at Pyro. He seems... easy to play.
Run at mans, hold mouse1
Run to resupply
Repeat
I still get owned a lot though... How do you play Demo well, anyway? Can't seem to get the hang of him.
Well, I'll give you my 2 cents.
There's a cap on how much running at mans you can do before you find you're really just blowing hot air. (hoho)
I tend to think of it in terms of risk vs. reward. As you put yourself in danger, you're also (hopefully) damaging the other team's ability to organize. It's why I prioritize enemy medics and teleporters over some of the easier tasks like harrying snipers or spy checking.
When I play pyro, I think of myself as a noisy spy. I distract the other team from whatever they were doing long enough to deal with me. If I do what I came there to do (like chase a medic away or force him to pop an uber early), then my death isn't as much of a letdown for me. I prefer to achieve an objective rather than just to be an annoyance.
As for demo, I find that what you should do first is to play on pubs, and use your pipes only. A lot of demos rely on stickies, but the downside is that you're constantly gauging how many more grenades you need to toss before you right-click. In the heat of battle, that can be a bad thing, and definitely can contribute to tunnel vision. Learn to cover the surrounding enemy area with pipes, and a lot of times the timed explosives will take care of things for you. As brightly colored as they are, a lot of people still don't look down for pipes on the ground, or don't realize how much damage they do.
If you can start nailing people as they're running with pipes, then I'd say you graduate to stickies. How to use stickies is a little more obvious, and will depend on your playstyle, but I'd say in general they're better used for a trap than a battle weapon. Just remember that demos, soldiers, and now pyros can blow them off easily. You'll want to find places that aren't all that obvious to put them, or you'll constantly be in the thick of battle to defend your objective-- not a great place for a demo.
So it follows you'll want to watch out for quick movers that can negate your ability to do a lot of damage without being in the line of fire. Pyros and scouts, mostly. If you're in range of a pyro, you're basically dead already. Any grenades you hit them with will probably get you in the blast radius also, so even a lucky crit (something a soldier might hope for in the same situation) will only make you easier to kill while you're burning. So the trick is to observe and single out pyros before they become a problem. Any time you see a pyro running away from you, you might want to cover your flanks. If you've mastered pipes by this time, taking pyros down from a distance won't be all that difficult, unless they're just bunnyhopping like crazy, or they have a devoted medic.
Scouts can tear you a new one depending on the player, and when your only options are lobbing grenades and swinging a bottle, well... I'd say usually your hope with scouts is that they run in predictable patterns, or that they don't see you laying stickies as you retreat. Either can net you a solid kill. Otherwise, if it's just you vs. the scout, it's likely you'll get taken out. Which should be an indicator to you that you need to be supporting your teammates rather than running up front. Taking the front lines can work sometimes to throw your enemy off, but it's more of an advanced tactic. You don't want to be trying psychological games with a soldier until you're sure you can handle him.
Obviously Demos will do better at some maps than others. I can't seem to get demo to work on Well, for instance, no matter how hard I try. There's a lot of scouts on that map, usually, but the battleground is constantly shifting, too. There's very few chokepoints, meaning you're constantly having to check your six. I'd say if you can get Demo to work on Well, you're on your way to making it your regular class.

Thanks for the useful commentary antipop, just another reason to get out of bed in the morning eh
