Singer Opts for 'Black National Anthem' Over 'Star-Spangled Banner'
Wednesday, July 02, 2008
A jazz singer shocked some Denver residents after replacing the words to the national anthem with those of the "Black National Anthem" during the annual State of the City address this week.
Rene Marie was asked to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper delivered the annual address on Tuesday. Instead, she sang the lyrics of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" — a hymn commonly referred to as the "Black National Anthem" — to the tune of the national anthem, MyFOXColorado.com reported.
"If anyone has got a right to be angry it's probably me," Hickenlooper told the station. "I guess what I feel most is just deeply disappointed."
The mayor said only Marie, her husband and a musical adviser knew what the local jazz singer had in mind.
"What she said was that she was very sorry, that she meant no disrespect, that she was trying to make a creative expression of her love for the country," Hickenlooper said.
But the change in lyrics angered many residents, including City Councilman Charlie Brown.
"I was mad," he told MyFOXColorado.com. "I almost walked off the stage."
Brown said the matter needs to be addressed. "There is no substitute for the national anthem."
After hearing this on various network news stations and reading some reactions online, I can't help but think "BFD."
She made a political and artistic point to turn some head and ellicit discussions regarding the Black American experience and are larger national pride. Good for her. Although I do think it is borderline annoying -- at most.
So,
Is it un-patriotic for Rene to have done what she did?
Or, are those incensed to rail against Rene Marie simply showing their white-American* asses?
*No I'm not trolling here, just referring our conservative majority in which being white is ubiquitous.

Going by what you said, I can see it being divisive in that something that's supposed to unify a country (The anthem) was replaced by something for a specific subset of that nation. Racism aside, I think it was intentional since A) She gets to claim moral innocence, Critics get to be labeled racists and C) She gets her name in the papers.
I understand why some people might be upset but it's not really that big of a deal. The lyrics to "Lift Every Voice and Sing" aren't offensive or anything, they're actually pretty inspiring. And there's nothing specifically "black" about them except that they're often sung in black churches.
So, yeah, she didn't sing the Star-Spangled Banner. That was a tiiiiny little bit douchey of her because that wasn't really the time or place for a personal statement; but ultimately it's not worth the uproar. What's worse is all the white folks who are going to grumble about how the black folks don't respect the country or some shit like that.

She was asked and expected to do one thing, which she agreed to, and then did another. This makes her childish and a liar, but I don't think it makes her unpatriotic.

Oh, I thought 'Black national anthem' meant it had specific references. Well, I still think being critical of her choice is okay, but 'almost walked off the stage' might be a bit dramatic.
The lyrics to Lift Every Voice and Sing, aka the "Black National Anthem:"
Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
'Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on 'til victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
'Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.

Our national anthem does suck pretty hard, but that's what she was supposed to sing. It certainly isn't a big deal, but she was certainly in the wrong.

Maybe I'm just cynical.
EDIT: I just realized what "BFD" means.
Your not the only one. I'm Canadian, and if someone sang some other song when they were suppose to sing the national anthem, I would consider it trolling, a dumb stunt. I would not call the singer unpatriotic, I'd call him/her a sleazy sell-out.

Of course, your national anthem is awesome.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

Yeah, and if there were some major injustice that she was protesting then she'd ethically get a free pass in my book. Like if the Denver mayor were engaged in some flagrantly racist activity, for instance. Singing the black national anthem at a speech given by David Duke? That would be classy. Or if this had been done right at the height of the civil rights movement, or right after MLK's death. That would have made sense, too. This is just silly, and IMO counterproductive.

On another note, why does our national Anthem suck? I ask merely out of curiosity. I always liked it, especially coming from the context of how and when it was written.
Every time Feral says something here, just pretend I said "Me too."

I like the song. I hate the tendency by most everyone who sings it to turn it into a yodeling endurance contest.

The American national anthem sucks because, first of all, it's just not very good. It's not something I'd ever really want to listen to. Second, wasn't it written about a battle? I mean, a national anthem should contain a message, something that country stands for. And the American national anthem is about winning a battle or something.
I hate the the national anthem as performance piece. Just play the music and let everyone sing.
Seriously. I hate how one person sings it and everyone else just stands there and listens like it's some goddamn religious ritual. It's the national anthem, everyone should be singing.

It's rambling and doesn't have much of a good continual tone or beat or whatever the hell the musical term is. Plus you only ever hear the first verse. There are four others and it just keeps going. And don't get me wrong, most national anthems are pretty shitty we aren't unique in that regard.
Then again, isn't "America the Beautiful" often substituted for the anthem as well? Though I guess not as frequently in our post-9/11 world blah, blah, blah, "the terrorists", blah, blah, blah, weeping bald eagle blah, blah, blah.
But the change in lyrics angered many residents, including City Councilman Charlie Brown.
"I was mad," he told MyFOXColorado.com. "Good Grief! I almost walked off the stage."
Brown said the matter needs to be addressed. "There is no substitute for the national anthem . . . ARGHHHH"

It wasn't even that great of a battle either. You'd think it would have been some amazing victory from the Revolutionary War or something, but no, it was from the fucking War of 1812 in a battle that we won mostly by default because we were defending against some guns that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn.

Eh. I like Canada's a lot. I also really like the Soviet/Chechen anthem, and I'll say that I probably like the Russian one, though I can't say for certain since they seem to change it every bloody year.

And even if it was, we win is not really the kind of message I want in my national anthem.

I always thought America the Beautiful should be our national anthem.
A piece whose best known rendition was as the signature song of a blind man of color.
Yes.
EDIT: God Bless America is often substituted, but that's not very good either.
Zimmydoom, Zimmydoom
Flew away in a balloon
Had sex with polar bears
While sitting in a reclining chair
Now there are Zim-Bear hybrids
Running around and clawing eyelids
Watch out, a Zim-Bear is about to have sex with yooooooou!
The U.S. national anthem sucks because it's so goddamn hard to sing. It sounds great when a full orchestra plays it, but it's not a song that everyone in the crowd can join in.
As for the song substitution, I say it was unprofessional of her not to sing the song she was asking to sing, but it's definitely not deserving of even the slightest outcry.

The American national anthem isn't about winning a battle. It's about perseverance and determination for a cause. I'd say we have the absolute best national anthem of any country. Lord knows it's better than God Save the Queen or some copy cat tune.
Although Lift Every Voice and Sing is about pretty much the same as the Star Spangled Banner, I can see why a lot of people got upset. I wouldn't have liked it myself, and I'm a black guy.

uh
what?
What was the cause and perseverance behind invading Canada?
It's a tired little bit of flag-worship, basically.
Agreed. Whenever I substitute teach for a middle school or above and lead my class to our school-wide pledge of allegiance an odd-smile always creeps across my face which is always shared among quite a few other students. The irony of our pledge is shared class-wide.
It's not that I hate America or wish to show unpatriotic disapproval to a group of teenage students it's simply that I don't worship my country. I don't worship anything.
I always thought America the Beautiful should be our national anthem.
I'd nominate Stranger Than Fiction by Bad Religion myself, but I suspect that wouldn't fly with the 64-and-up demographic.
