So I just got a e8400, upgraded from a e2160. Now every time I log into my Windows Log-in, or come from stand-by, or exit a game, or even refresh the main page of Steam my computers hangs. If I try to click on something during that couple of seconds I hear a beep from my computer. That's really the only side effect from my processor. I can play games normally, no noticeable problems. Maybe it's something in my bios?
yeah your going for 65nm to 45nm maybe the bios needs to be flashed. Is the processor set to the right clocking? check inside the bios also check the temps with either rivatuner or in the bios if your mobo supports it. What is the model number of your mobo?
You will need to see if the FSB, CPU vCore and CPU multiplier are set to the e8400s stock. The e8400 has a stock vCore of around 1.12. The stock vCore on an e2160 is around 1.35. Which is the safe limit of a 24/7 e8400.
Tell us what motherboard you have. Including the revision number. If it is okay you will have to put the e2160 back in and flash the bios if needed. Then unhook your PSU and bleed your bios by taking out your battery. After it's bled for 5 minutes or so put the e8400 and the battery back in. Go into the bios and make sure to configure it to your liking as well as check to see if the e8400 settings are correct.
I built a system for my brother with the same proc and mobo when the e8400 came out. It has the f8 bios. Use gigabytes @bios and update it to be on the safe side. Make sure the e2160 is in it so no crashing or errors occur while getting the new bios.
