Files Off a Spare Tower

My g/f got a new laptop a while ago from her job. This replaced her desktop that she had so we just keep the tower in the closet, got rid of the monitor and everything else when we moved recently.

Fastforward to today when she just got a call from her pop asking if he could have the tower to which she said ok. Now she gets off the phone, looks at me and asks me if I can take off all the incriminating stuff on that computer from my laptop.

So I ask you this H&A people. Will I ruin the harddrive in the tower, if i took it out and put it in my external hard drive enclosure? Is it as simple as that to do what i need?

Thanks guys!

It's basically that simple, yes. Obviously you'll want to make sure you don't static shock the drive, but other than that you should be fine. I don't think you'll need to worry about setting master/slave since you'll be hooking it up, presumably, through usb.

Yeah, it's through USB. That was my main worry, that I had to set the harddrive to slave when I put it in the external case.

You shouldn't need to as far as I'm aware. You're plugging it in through USB, so it's basically like plugging in a little usb drive.

Actually, a lot of enclosures require drives to be set to master, not slave or cable select. If you have to move the jumper, just make a note about where it currently is, and move it back when you're done.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?
