I might use this a bit. it would be alot easier than trying to find my flash drives to move stuff between my desktop and my new computer ill be getting next week.
how many invites do you have? if theres enough to go around ill take one.
Oh my god, oh my god! I saw this demo a couple months ago, and wanted to use it so bad, but I didn't know anyone in the beta. Would anyone care to send me an invite? I love you long time? :winky:

Sorry guys, ran out halfway through the latest batch of PMs. I believe Sushisource offered to provide some, and the people I invited may have their own to hand out now. Keep hope alive!
Storage is 2GB right now, which isn't great, but kinda like having a shared thumb drive on all of your computers, which is handy.
I should have invites available for people in a few days - I didn't realize you needed to download the software in order to set up an account, and my comp's in the shop.
Hark! I have a request for an invitation to this dazzling soiree of databytes! The humble Akinos has informed me that he has exhausted his supply. So, I pose these words to you, reader, if you have a precious spare invitation you might send it my way.
It's really great, my only complaint is that it is not exactly perfect when it comes to editing files directly in the folder. I've done it a couple of times and about half the time it becomes choked up/confused and forgets to upload the changes.
Unfortunately I think Apple is coming out with a subscription based version of this same basic service with a ton more space and better features so... d'oh.
It's illegal to share copyrighted files online as far as I know, while the hosting service cannot be held accountable for letting users share copyrighted material without the host's consent.
That's just some bullshit I pulled out of my ass but it was worth saying something.
Sounds like the site in question was built specifically to store/transfer music, where-as this is for general file usage. I'm sure there's probably something in their terms and agreements that would get them out of any trouble.
But this isn't just music, I believe. I'm at work with touchy network people, so I can't verify for certain, but it seems to me this is more for business people who want to easily transfer ALL kinds of files to and from multiple computers (excel, word, powerpoint, autoCAD, etc).
I've seen it, it's a locker system where you transfer your mp3 files into a password-locked account so you can download to another computer.
But this is not what Dropbox is for at all...
While you technically could, it would be a vastly inefficient way to do anything like that, especially considering the alternatives. There's a 2GB limit.. hell, an IM clients transfer function would probably be more useful for that.
The main function of Dropbox isn't even, to me, sharing files with other people, but having a shared folder synced amongst all of my computers and online, with the bonus that at any point I can add any computer I use by installing it.
It is also useful on a household scale, but again only for small documents that would otherwise be emailed or transferred via usb drive.
All in all, I think anyone going after file sharing networks have MUCH bigger fish to fry.
As an alternative, check out www.foldershare.com. It was recently bought by Microsoft and is a similar setup.
I prefer this, been using Foldershare for a while and it's just a pain.
I have 5 invites remaining!
*edit* To explain the purpose of this and Foldershare (possible usage)
One of my clients has a small business. She is a personnel consultant and works mainly out of her home, but travels a lot. She has 3 PCs at home, with 2 satellite workers on either side of DFW (Allen and Lancaster).
With Foldershare, she can save resumes and profiles to the folder she has shared (in her case, 1 for the person in Allen, 1 for the person in Lancaster, since they do different jobs).
The employees do what they need with the file and when done, just email her. She checks the folder and since they've saved it on their end, Foldershare updates the folder on hers automatically.
Dropbox works very nearly identically. She also uses it to sync all her pictures and music. The main difference is that there isn't really a limit on Foldershare since none of the files are stored on their server, like Dropbox does.

(I'm not sure but people I invite might get 10 more, allowing the thread to continue to provide invites until everyone that wants one has one.)
Invite sent!

Preliminary questions:
What's the storage limit? Transfer limit?
Storage limit seems to be 2 gigabytes. I've not been able to locate a transfer limit though.
I too have PMed Akinos...

No idea about a transfer limit.

My most gracious of thanks in advance, kind sirs!
It's on its way. Here's hoping you have any remaining.
1 Box reserved to be dropped on someone.
5 boxes that can still be dropped. message me if you want one.

we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
The RIAA will be shutting this down very quickly.
That's just some bullshit I pulled out of my ass but it was worth saying something.
I have no idea where to start with how much is wrong with this post.
I wish I was kidding. A locker-type filesharing service has already been sued by EMI
EMI says that transferring a copyrighted file to a 3rd party is illegal distribution.
But this is not what Dropbox is for at all...

send me your email.
I feel this is relevant to the "music sharing" discussion in this thread.
