[Game On?!] Science and Industry numero Uno! (S&I2 not quite out yet)
For those unfamiliar with the game the concept is simple.
Shoot enemy team!
Steal enemy scientists!
Protect friendly scientists!
Pick new inventions!
???
PROFIT!
It's a pretty simple concept but S&I becomes rather deep with all the inventions and gadgets you can choose to research.
In fact there's a rather large list when it comes down to the research tree
So lets get some games going and make some money.. in the name of science!
There is also an the aptly named sequel to Science and Industry, Science and Industry 2 but unfortunately S&I2 isn't done yet and is only out in a barely playable alpha form.
This version can only interest people willing to work on the game. It's of no interest to the "normal" players, which are 99% of the player base. I would not label this a playable version, it is a waste of time for the average player and I can see why some like evils_army would get angry.
Make it clear this is a "development version", something to attract contributors. This is not explained in the announcement, so players believe this is a first playable version which it is not.
As it is, the random player starts the game expecting S&I2, and the first thing he sees is a pistol with no skin, a giant net graph taking half the screen, Counter Strike models hovering around etc... the difference between the player's expectation and what he gets is pretty big. You can't fix the game right away so at least fix the expectation: change your announcement, label this version differently.
I agree. I'm going to be skipping on it for now.

Sounds like an obvious desperation tactic to draw attention to the mod, but even if they were honest about it, this is a terrible idea. Builds that are unplayably buggy or unfinished should never be released to the public - all it does is ruin their first impression of the game, and by the time it's actually finished(if ever) they'll have forgotten all about it. Too many Source mods to count killed their chances right off the bat this way. As a general rule of thumb, people are only willing to try a game once, so don't let them play it at all until it doesn't suck.
The fact that they passed it off as an actual release with only a passing mention that it might have bugs just makes it worse. They really shot themselves in the foot here.
I was all excited, too. I saw this post and I lit up. It seems kind of silly for them to release something like this for everyone to download, because people are dumb and they'll get turned off thinking it's something it's not.

Seconded.
Thirded.
I just installed Science And Industry 1, theres a server with a few people on it, probably bots though.
This would be awesome if we get a Penny Arcade server going.

Sounds good to me. Go for it.
Go for it.
Is there anyone willing to host a server? We also have the option of going to a empty pub though.
