Out of the blue just now, my antivirus (CA Antivirus) popped up saying that the Fallout 2 installer exe contained "Win32/Adclicker.JO" and deleted it. (Nice of it to tell me now, after I installed it and played it for a day.)
So then I told it to scan the Fallout 1 installer (which I've had for a good... two weeks?) and it said it had it too and deleted it.
But I find this suspicious, since 1. I've already had them for so long; 2. CA Antivirus is supposed to scan the executable when it executes; 3. I've yet to hear a single report about anything malicious coming out of GOG.
I've been using CA Antivirus for years and it has had a single false positive before. So, what do you guys think?
Unless CD Projekt have been spectacularly careless, I'm guessing false positive. One thing though, you might want to post this on their forums to let others know, or possibly send an e-mail to them directly so that they know that this is happening.
Anyone else having the issue that when you use the beta code they gave you it says that it's no longer valid?
I don't really mind since I already created my account and got the games I wanted, but now I can't login anymore since I can't get past the beta login screen.

I had that problem when I was using my computer at my girlfriend's place. I never found a workaround. Seems kind of silly that they wouldn't even give us a login page. I guess if you cleared out your cookies, you're screwed at the moment.

I'm sure that the account details ought to persist to when the site goes live for reals, but I hope that's soon.
After re-downloading Fallout 2 twice (the first time it just freaked out and before it got around to copying from the temp folder to the final location, CA caught it and deleted it) I had my brother scan it with BitDefender and it didn't find any problem with it.
Not that anybody cares, though, since it just confirms what was already assumed.
That cookie thing to get to the login page is probably the strangest part of the experience, but I assume it's simply a beta thing. If they do a perpetual Google-style beta, though, it might be nice to figure out a workaround. Is there anyone with the skills to grab the generic "let me log into beta" cookie and sort out how to adapt it individually? I don't really know if such things are possible, I just won't delete my cookies.
It really is great to have such a convenient and inexpensive way to get these old games. This is really how it SHOULD work. It's easier to buy the games than pirate them, and you don't have to worry about viruses and fakes and cd mounting tools and all that hassle. I really, really hope that people adopt this service. I'm not sure that it is applicable to new-release games (although Steam is a pretty good alternative for them), but it certainly seems valid for retro games that have stood the test of time.
If they can come out of beta soon, they can ride the Fallout 3 hype to help give them a boost also. I have a feeling that a lot of the beta customers have grabbed the Fallout games already, partly because of the desire to replay them before the sequel.

But all that aside, I'm having a blast. Some rooms are just unbearably epic for a game that's so blocky, I hardly can tell what's going on in the cutscenes. I think some people just don't get the whole "it's fun to fail - multiple times" type gameplay. And the swordplay is a lot (a whole lot) more bearable if you just skip right over trying to juggle the damn vsim with your mouse and just use your numeric pad.
My biggest beef is that the patch actually makes the game much cheaper (if memory serves). It removes friendly fire, which means that in later stages enemies will cluster together and whack at you in a wall of death without fear of consequence, while your own attacks are constantly blocked by one of the multiple weapons clipping through one another.
In the final stage when fighting the Ultra Cheap-o skeletons I just crouched down and swung at their feet, since they can't block there. Then it was just a question of what happens first, me killing them or them hitting my head and one-shotting me.

Man, I have yet to get past the first two enemy skeletons in the expansion.. They're just ripping me apart. And oh, yeah.. The wonders of enemies that can one-shot you.
I don't think I ever played it unpatched, I remember it being exceedingly difficult and sort of a coin-toss whether or not you progressed or loaded your latest autosave.
Also, man is IPX LAN multiplayer easy to set up.

Ok. So Sacrifice and Giants are automatic purchases for me. But dear God there are magnificent games on this. Messiah? Evolva? MDK? Fallout Tactics? My cup runneth over.
Oh man, my wallet is going to HATE me. Descent, Freespace, Fallout, Shattered Steel!
I remember way back when Shattered Steel was going to be released, I actually got to participate in a beta review of the game. Interplay sent it out to my house with instructions to play it and let them know of any problems and/or a review of the game and then ship it back to them with included postage after a few weeks. So awesome. I only wish they sent a retail copy to me as a reward, but no such luck.
So fallout 2 is a given for me (already have 1), thinking about checking out freespace - I've never played it.
Freespace 2 is a great choice, especially with all the mods available to turn it from an older game into an incredible looking game. Not that it was bad before, but it's starting to age. The controls, story, and everything else is timeless.
Descent 1+2 or 3 are nice (1+2 are really showing age, 3 isn't too bad) if you like to give yourself vertigo and motion sickness. I loved those games. I saw someone who is trying to write up a control scheme for a Wiimote + Nunchuck for Descent. I am going to watch that carefully because it could be absolutely fantastic!
Back when Descent 1 came out, I had a junky little joystick so I taught myself to play using A,Z for throttle with all the keys around them for different weapons and firing, and the numpad for ship control. Yes - The NUMPAD. It actually served me quite well. Turning, strafing, and multitudes of other controls were all right at my fingertips, and it drove my friends mad to play with me after I got pretty good at it. Though, with the right joystick it is so much more incredible.
I loved Descent as a kid, don't know if I would play it now. I still love the fallout games, I'm looking for games that are fun to play now. I've actually never heard of most of these.
If anyone can hook me up with a code, I'd appriciate it...
If anyone could hook me up with a way to access my account, I'd appreciate it. This whole thing is leaving a rather sour taste in my mouth.
What happened to your account again?
Well, if the only thing is the beta key doesn't work anymore, just send him a new beta key and he should be able to access his account. They're not linked.
Evidently I signed up with both of my gmail accounts, so I have 2 codes to give out. First 2 PM's I receive gets them.
Now, do I want Fallout or Descent 1&2 more? hmm. Does anyone know if the version of Descent can be used with the DS port? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't.
With Sacrifice being re-sold at such a bargain, is there a chance they have their multiplayer servers online? I remember there was a community of players that set up their own game patch and had a pretty thriving multiplayer network, but I don't remember where I found it.
I would love to do some Sacrificin' teams matches.

Oh crap, got my beta key and I have no idea what to choose. I was blind to the world of PC games when most of the these came out, so I'll need some help. I've played the Fallout stuff, Descent, and Giants, so what do people suggest I start out with?
Freespace 1 and 2 looks good (haven't played a good space sim in years), but I remember hearing good things about MDK back in the day. Help!

Get freespace 1 & 2, then use the fan upgrades that run fs1 and fs2 in the fs2 engine with updated graphics. They look good even by current gen standards (especially the capital ship beam cannons) Freespace 2 is pretty much perfection for the genre... pity it didn't really make any money .

Also, that invitation is pretty sweet. If anybody didn't get in and still wants to we could daisy chain them.
Finally have the chance to play the Fallout games in preparation for 3 this fall!

I am a freaking nerd.
And you should probably play with a good one.
