Put it this way, if my sniper's machete always critted from behind, I'd be king of the world. The blackjack would just be a standard melee weapon- not a 30-damage toothpick like the knife- but it'd still kill anyone with a couple of hits to the back.
Obviously hearing his teams chatter re: sentry location is useful but also if the opposing team is making a push, he would know that it would be a prime time to go in for some backstabs.
When you said that, I immediately thought of a little map that would let the spy "ping" building locations, or even other classes.
I think spies should be calling everything out for their team, like the classes the other team is playing and sentry locations. Why they don't I have no idea.
Allowing a spy to set his health to something very low could very well be broken. No one questions someone with low health making a beeline straight for their own base, changing that would force players to spend way too much time shooting each other.

I flame anyone who comes back to base, I barely look at their health (or their ubercharge if they're a medic). As far as I'm concerned, people should have to spy check to winkle out spies, not just rely on the fact that the disguises aren't much use or that they'll flash into existence if they touch someone or absorb one stray round.
The only thing I was every decent at with spies was to sneak behind enemy lines and destroy teleporters or the odd sniper or engineer.
Ditto..
That video just puts every attempt at spying I've had to shame.
I thought what was good about that video was that even though he's a good spy he wasn't afraid to show that even good spy's regularly get found out, make mistakes, and get killed. It's being smart about your approach and working around the idiosyncrasies that net's you a rare but sweet string of kills .
I find the difference between a spy with a high score and one with a low score is really just a matter of luck. It a little bit of skill and a lot of luck to get a huge string of backstabs.
I am shocked and appalled at this statement. While a lot of luck applies when getting to your desired location, skill gets you back to your dispenser alive while leaving a pile of corpses in your wake. I used that video as a guide for a while until I discovered how lethal the revolver was.
Spy is really all about waiting, waiting, and more waiting. I was hanging over the cart on pl_dbheights disguised as a medic. About a minute passed and a push happened. I jumped down got a good four stabs, which cleared the cart, and died somehow on retreat (I think it was a crit rocket). I was told afterward that someone on my team was mid typing "Dual do something." as I jumped down. I can also defend the cart at times on Goldrush by waiting in corners and stabbing as a group comes.[/egoIreallythinkI'mahorridspy]

The extreme difficulty of playing spy also makes it, for me, the most satisfying class. At least on the rare occasions when I don't do something dumb and manage to help my team. I just wish I could figure out the sap stab combo, but every time I try I end up pulling out my gun or opening the console.
Hey guyz, I have two friends who are kind of familiar to the game, but not quite that great (They are noobs). Sometimes they get frustrated when they suck badly. I want them to get into TF2, but I'm not sure what to do. I could either introduce them to the PA servers where they will most likely get slaughtered until they learn, but they may think they suck too much for the game and quit. Or I could play with them on the pubs, practice my bad classes or silly tricks, but then the pub experience might be so wack that they decide they don't like game.
Hey, I suck and still play on the PA servers. . . I think I had 4 nemesises... nemesi... whatever just now. I don't have to dominate at a game to have fun. I have yet to have a bad experience with the PA guys and they don't really bitch about how bad I am. I'd be willing to bet it wouldn't be that way on a pub server.
Though I haven't tried. But, when I've got the PA guys to play with, why would I bother?
Spy seems like a strange class because, like the sniper, he is disconnected from the rest of the team. But at the same time the spy would do a lot better if he didn't have to rely only on what he sees but could also tap into the team communication. Obviously hearing his teams chatter re: sentry location is useful but also if the opposing team is making a push, he would know that it would be a prime time to go in for some backstabs.
It's a bit inherently difficult to play because it calls for patience and restraint as well as a large reliance on luck and laziness or neglect on the other teams part.
I can't think of what valve might do for the spy pack, it will be interesting when it comes.
That sounds brilliant, I haven't played any splinter cell since SC2 but the whole "bugging the enemy communication" was brilliant in that game. Though I can't really see the use in pubs / casual games
"alright everyone... they're piping the theme to fraggle rock, react accordingly"
Get them play on the PA servers for a week or two, and when they say "F this" take them to a pub and they'll be like "oooooooooooh."
edit~ "We're really gooooood."
Hmm, good idea, hopefully I can get them to survive two weeks on the PA servers.
If I can still manage to play on our PA servers anyone can. I am Sniper/Pyro/Scout/Medic/Soldier/Demo/Heavy Fodder and my low scores prove it. But, I amuse myself in my pathetic attempts to get better. And I have actually noticed improvement in a few classes. And yet still, a few classes seem to rub my inabilities in my face and laugh out loud.
tl;dr - Have them play on PA, learning on Pub is annoying as everyone is running around without a clue. At least when their dead, they can watch someone doing it 'right' on deathcam and learn.
i knocked you around like a ragdoll skexis, it was pretty awesome.
I couldn't figure out what happened at first, I thought some pyro had blown me away, and then I bounced a second and a third time, and I knew I was in love.
I hate Spies. One, because it's the only class that can consistently make me feel like I got an unfair death(mother-fuckin' facestabs among them...), and two, because the universe fucking HATES me if I try to play Spy. Any night I try to play Spy, you can bet that I'm going to get shot and killed by someone on the other side of the map who didn't know I was there, without any other players nearby. I'd guess around 70% of the nights I've played Spy, that's happened at least once, no exaggeration. I couldn't even begin to count the number of times I've snuck into a passage that no one's been in the past 2 minutes and just happened to come across the single Scout/Pyro/Soldier who's decided to traipse down there during the 6 seconds I happen to be moving through with a depleted cloak.
Seriously, I'm not sure I can properly express the sheer statistical impossibility of my Spy experiences. I'm not a great Spy, and this is a pretty high-level community, but both of those facts still is not enough to explain away at least half of the hundreds of absurd scenarios I've been in. It's simultaneously infuriating and fascinating.

I never asked for this!
My play style is all about the ambush.

Actually I hear he's pretty damn adept at the molestation of children.
I think you have it backwards!

Question: is there a way to get the party gibs?
