Car alarms...

Hello fellow P/A'ers.. I'm about to invest a large sum of money on a new car which is quite the eye candy for all (including thieves). So as to deter (sort of) or atleast help me catch someone who is trying to break into my car (probably 1/1000 car alarm siren trips) & to help supplement my insurance costs I want to invest in a car alarm.

Does anyone have any reccomendations? I'm not looking for anything flashy or super awesome. Just something to tell me if my car is being fucked with and something to signal me if my alarm is pissing off everyone in the neighborhood for no reason. Also the cheaper the $..but I am assuming its a case of you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the future input

I posted this in the last car alarm thread and I think it'll be valuable here as well. Car alarms will almost purely be used to reduce your insurance cost and nothing more. Most people don't think "Oh no! Thief" when they hear a car alarm, they think "I wish that asshole would turn his alarm off." If you live in an urban area, after the 100th time your alarm is set off by someone's car radio, you'll stop thinking "Oh no! Thief" as well.

Yea- I've taken all of these into consideration. As of now I'm sort of paranoid being in that my neghborhood isn't very good. My balcony/ Room window has a great clear view of my car so I could easily peek and turn it off. I also at college park right outside my window therefore again I can check and turn it off easily.

I totally understand and partially agree with you though. Thus I figure the cheaper one I got the less sensative it would be. Thanks for the response though!

I've heard good things about Viper systems, but I don't have any personal experience. A friend of mine had a pretty good system that could even be set to go off if someone reaches into your car when your window was rolled down. Not that i recommend leaving your window down...

I personally use the included alarm on my VW.

I also use the factory alarm in my '08 Elantra. I was told by my insurance company that an alarm doesn't really affect the price of the policy unless you have a car desirable to thieves, which an '08 Elantra is not.

Get the best alarm you can afford. As far as 'sensitivity' is concerned, if you mean the alarm being set off by WRX exhausts, when the workshop fits the glass breakage sensor, the best way to set the sensitivity is to make sure you can belch into it and it doesn't go off. You should be able to punch the window nearest the sensor pretty hard, almost hard enough to make you worry about breaking it before it goes off.

I had a Viper for a couple of years, and it worked pretty well. Nothing fancy, just an alarm for when the doors opened "unauthorized" or if the glass broke. Had a feature that automatically locked your doors when the engine was turned on and unlocked them when you turned it off. That was kind of neat.
