Haven't had a Mount & Blade post for a bit and the last beta for the game before commercial release (to be
published by Paradox) came out about a month ago.
What is Mount & Blade?
M&B is a realistic medieval mounted or unmounted combat RPG with none of that sissy magic stuff.
"We are offering Mount&Blade through a try before you buy model. You can download the game and start playing right away. What you download is not a demo, it is the full game. There is, however, a level limit at 6. When your character reaches level 6, you can start a new game or, if you decide you like the game well enough, go on and buy a license online. As soon as you buy a license you will obtain a serial key which will remove the level limit. You will not need to download the game again."

So whats new in this version?
Version 0.960 -
http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php/topic,39194.0.html
Not a whole lot actually. The main content patch came in 0.950 it seems so this was mostly bug fix's. But since there hasn't been a
post on the game since the .800 days i thought i would bring it up again.
Having not played since the 0.700 patch time i was pretty overwhelmed by all the new stuff. Castle sieges / burning and looting cities / able to align yourself with a faction and conquer the map / an in game encyclopedia with listings of all the cities and NPCs.
It has a very Total War feel to it now but with you down in the thick of battle.
I've never played this before
Should I correct this right now?
Yep.
The mounted combat was what did it for me, it was awesome.

It is like yesterday that I had announced the first beta version of the game. Yet it was more than four years ago, and everything was so uncertain at the time. If the players had not supported the game as avidly as they did, the whole project would surely die out somewhere along the way. But it didn't die out, we released many versions throughout these years, got the most wonderful feedback a game developer could hope for, saw amazing mods come out, and I personally had the most interesting time of my life. Now, four years later, it is time to announce the last beta release of Mount & Blade. I want to thank everyone who walked with us in this adventure. And although this is the last beta release, I am sure there will be lots of exciting things in the coming months and years.
Changes and bug fixes in this version are as follows:
Lots of fixes related to strategical faction AI.
Lance models now match their length in item stats correctly.
Bug with speed bonus calculation fixed.
Troop portraits displayed correctly in notes window in DirectX7 mode.
Faces should no longer be entirely black on some older video cards in Dx7 mode.
Various problems with the physics system fixed.
AI pathfinding improved.
Bug fixed where sometimes an arrow would pass through the target without colliding.
Various crashes related to parties being removed fixed.
Face generator changes.
Rock physics objects now match their models.
Siege defense is no longer lost automatically when the player is knocked unconscious.
Retirement system fixed.
Siege attacks are now started more frequently if the player is around (either defending or attacking).
Looting a village now produces some cattle.
You can now put captured lords into town or castle prisons.
Awesome. I shall now proceed to play the hell out of this.
I was also happy to find a newer version of the Expanded Gameplay mod for the game. It does require an older version (v0.903) of the game then the current version though. Here is a link to the version it requires -

(just make a seperate install for this version like "C:\Program Files\Mount&Blade1" during the install)

Expanded Gameplay II: Illumination
The goal of this mod is a balanced, enjoyable, challenging gameplay.
The main features are:
* A two-tiered game structure, starting in medieval Calradia you are on a quest for eternal life. When you succeed, centuries pass, Caldaria enters the Age of Illumination, gunpowder technology is developed, and all troops and factions have evolved.
* The game is different every time you play. Heroes, lords, and some troops are equipped with a different set every time you start a new game. Chests can contain great or worthless items. The evolution of Calradia into the Age of Illumination is also determined while you play and is different every time.
* Ten very distinct starting characters, with access to different troops for hire. Varied paths of character development and specialization.
* A game-long quest for immortality, with several side-quests.
* Completely new system of item stats that serves to further differentiate the characters in gameplay. More than 600 new items, more modifiers enabled on items, modifiers are more relatively significant, thus further increasing item variety.
* Combat abilities that rely on character attributes - Berserk Rage, Sprint, Combat Focus.
* Elaborate character wound/death scheme upon knockout -- wounds that heal with time, permanent death, talismans. Character Score display for when you perish in battle.
* Trophy items that are gained in battle and can be sold, exchanged for experience, used to train attributes, or gambled for items. Special charm items that protect you from wounds and death, improve combat abilities.
* Completely new faction troops, elite faction troops, unique faction troops available only to particular starting characters. Many new non-faction varied troop types and parties. Varied parties to fight against or alongside, like deserters, scouts, hunters.

Damn Vaegirs keep burning my Swadian villages on their border :x
Just noticed you can build structures in the cities the king gives you that improves the cities chances on staving off a siege / allow you to rest twice as fast in that city / generate more tax's. Build times all depend on your skill as an engineer so im trying to find a NPC to recruit with some skill in Engineering. So hooked on this game again, been playing the Expanded mod mostly.
We were doing OK in the war against to Vaegirs. So what do they do? Declare war on the Rhodocks! Who promptly capture the King, making it so I can't get paid!
Ok, fine. Two front war. Doing OK, but haven't captured much. Hey, I know! Lets declare war on Swadia! Then on the Khergits!
...so everyone on the map except the Nords wants to kill me. Eep.
Raze_Everything: there's only one NPC with engineer skill- Altimeer. And he's a bit of a dick; he hates Jerimius, who is the best doctor NPC the game has to offer. I usually just level up one of the other NPCs into an engineer.
That's the other big new thing with the latest versions- lots of companions, but they all have their own likes and dislikes. One hates retreating, one LIKES it (saves his own skin, doncha know). One hates burning villages, one likes losing lots of soldiers...and they all have their own opinions about everyone else. Makes things interesting from time to time.
...by the by if you do this make sure you don't outrun your infantry line. My armor is heavy enough the enemy infantry usually only does 2-3 points of damage per hit, but when you're getting assraped by 20 of them that ceases to matter. :P
Who do you think has the best set of infantry, and what type? I like archers alot, but i'll be damned is it hard to train those hair-brained troops. they seemed to be wearing paper.
Aside from that, how do I get a castle? I am having a hard time conducting sieges since My guys just get murdered.

This game is so completely awesome. I bought it in the .5xx days and it was the best $15?(i don't remember exactly) I've ever spent. If you lost your key, the dev website will email you a new one.
Most of the big mods and total conversions are for .903. But they released the libraries for .960 so expect to see the oldies updated and new awesome ones coming out soon. Although the latest version of native is pretty damn fun on its own.
One of the best things about this game is how mod friendly it is. There was a really great little mod floating around that made arrows realistic. It totally changed the game. Archers were actually useful and the battles were usually bloodbaths. It will probably work with any recent version, as it was just edited weapon stats.
Let 'em eat fucking pineapples!
This will be here until I receive an apology or Weedlordvegeta get any consequences for being a bully
Been trying to play an archer lately, not having the best of luck. Pretty used to riding by people at high speed and chopping them down.
Usually ride out in front of my troops and hit them from behind targeting archers mostly and let my troops slam into them in the front.
So instead I'll simply say this: while I've always enjoyed Mount and Blade as a concept and a foundation for other games, this is the first time in the game's life cycle when I've enjoyed playing the "native" version more than any of the mods.
Does the $$ spent for the beta key also get you a copy of the launch game?

If you already paid for the beta version, then you will not have to pay any extra for the final release. When the game is officially released it will be no different than downloading another patch for you.
Which is why I am happy I paid $5 for mine oh so long ago.
Also you should be able to e-mail the Dev and he will send you a new CD-key. Thats what I did awhile back. Took maybe 2 days I think.
What's the ETA on full release? Should I buy this within the next couple weeks to avoid the price increase?
Should I correct this right now?

I was thinking the exact same thing. heh.
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
I am sorely tempted to try out the Merchant class. No power strike is HARSH, but those stats are to die for. I guess playing the leader role while not being that good in combat might not be worth it.
Somehow I accidentally managed to develop my most recent character generally along these lines. I'm not a very high level and don't have a very big party (20 men or so), but the party of Nordic infantry I do have tends to hit "warrior" pretty friggin' fast. Also in previous versions I used to basically solo enemy armies by myself, running people down with my warhorse and bastard sword until I had an overwhelming enough numerical advantage that I could order the rest of my units to charge. This time around I notice that I do a whole lot more commanding than I used to--I try and find some quick nearby highground to position my infantry and archers on and then find a shady spot on the flank where I can keep my calvary in reserve. But when the battle actually joins I only manage to kill maybe an archer or two.
...actually that may not be the character, now that I think of it; I also used to play on the medium difficulty levels, I bumped everything up to the highest difficulty for this particular game.
added: You know what I absolutely love about that youtube clip of mounted combat gameplay? Towards the middle where he stops using the war scythe and switches to his sword, everytime he rides by someone and swings he turns around to see if he got him or not. You can almost feel the joy in the player as he looks back over his shoulder and sees another enemy infantryman fall to his knees.
The problem with regular Mount and Blade in the newest version is that "beating" it is fairly easy. Get 50 swadian knights, and no army in the world can stand against you (and most armies under 100 men will be hard pressed to score a single casualty). Expanded gameplay 2 seems to add an end game of a sort, but getting there is damn annoying and staying there seems to be just as hard considering the upkeep cost of decent ranked soldiers and the hidden nerf to the trainer skill.
I wish there were more mods kept up to date for this game...
Best. Thing. Ever.
...you could do what I do and only hire Nordic infantrymen and the super-expensive mounted mercenaries you find in the taverns. If you want to be a Nord, this is a hard, hard game to master.
When Age of Conan said they were going to have mounted combat and action-RPG combat where you actively block and swing, this was what I pictured. Age of Conan's got a lot of problems, but it's even *worse* if you've played Mount and Blade before.
In playing the demo, it seemed like the controls to affect your swing direction were similar to Dark Messiah of M&M: press a direction key while holding the mouse and you would prep your swing on that side. But sometimes I can't seem to get all the different strikes when I'm riding my horse. What are the key presses for the forward strike and overhead chop?
if you look upward while attacking, you do a downward chop - if you want to thrust, look down while attacking
some weapons can only swing or thrust, it tells you in their stats
