I'd appreciate some help and information

I'm reposting the general gist of my G&T PAX thread, as I'm still desperate for information and a better sense of what to expect from PAX.

I'll start off by simply asking what to expect. I want 3 days of console gaming heaven, how do I go about this? I'm not expecting precise aim and direction from PAX, but I'd rather not show up next friday without any idea of what I'm in for, or waste a day finding my place among other console gamers. I'm not interested in any of the official tournaments or events (besides the final round of the omegathon, and I might check out the exhibition hall if anything worthwhile is displayed), so it should be pure gaming all the way through. Is there a place where people just set up consoles and play for 3 days straight, can I expect anything like that? Any help is appreciated, I'm surprised the G&T thread failed so utterly.

PAX Musts: Go to at least one of the PA Q&A's, the Omegathon Final Round and spend a lot of time in the expo hall.

The Q&A because they're pretty hilarious, the Omegathon Final because it's crazy how much energy and excitement is in the room and it's just plain fun, and the Expo Hall is pretty self explanitory.

Well, lets see...Nintendo will be there, so new DS game demos and POSSIBLE Wii demos. Microsoft will be there, so 360 games(possibly Gears of War). Red Octane will be there, so I'm sure there will be a demo of Guitar Hero 2 somewhere. Ubisoft...Frag Dolls will probably be there playing whatever is their 'big game' at the moment and kicking people's asses at it. The Behemoth will be there, so maybe a demo of their new game. Sweet Kitty will be there with plenty of japanese treats and figures to buy. Plus more.

That's just what I imagine at least.

Wii would be amazing (but I fear the length of the lines), new DS games would be awesome, Gears would be great, and I just realized that while Castle Crashers may be great as a final product, playing only the first level would probably be a bit boring and a waste of time.

Well, new DS games are a sure thing. But the Wii is just rumored. It's like 50/50(they should have it there, but they may not).

And I'd say that Gears is almost a sure thing(though, that's just my opinion).

You got my opinion at least.

I did, and I appreciate it, but I expected people actually wanting to discuss PAX prior to its arrival in G&T. I'm still totally in the dark as to what to expect from PAX, and it's only a week away, and I can't be the only one. Do new people just show up and hope for the best?

Wow. I don't intend to have everything planned, but I want to have some idea of what to do and where to go. I don't want the first day wasted learning things I could have known months prior.

I mean...look on there and see if there's anything that you're interested in. If you look at the top, you can see the types of areas(i.e: Console Freeplay, Wireless Lounge, PC Freeplay and Tabletop) to play games in.

You want to play console games all day? Go find the Console Freeplay zone. I dunno where that'll be this year(they've moved it around every year).

You really don't need to plan anything. You'll get a schedule with all the events, so it's not like you'll miss anything you wanted to see.

PAX is really what you make of it. If you want to do nothing but game the entire time you're there, you'll be more than capable of doing exactly that. If you want to hang out in panels and hear what people in the industry have to say all three days, you'll be able to do that. There is no right way to do PAX.* Take a look at the schedule, see what interests you, and sketch out a rough timetable of what you want to do. Just keep in mind some events and panels will change right up to the minute they're supposed to start. Last year, I had a print-out of the schedule from the web site, got the event book and saw things had changed around in there, and then found when it came time for the actual event, stuff had been moved around even more.

*There is a right way to do PAX, and it involves watching The Wizard in an auditorium full of geeks that have watched the movie far too many times.

Well except in instances where two events are taking place at the same time, such as the Super Smash Bros Melee Tourney and the 1st PA Panel with the "Big Announcement"

    yay l33t paint skills.

General layout of the 4th floor, I didnt draw the individual rooms cause im lazy. Just put the text in the general location of the room.

There will be a map in the pax booklet thing you get at checkin.

    4th%20floor%20layout.JPG

and im going to stay it again... thats not one big room, its several rooms (to those who havent been to the mbc before).

Yes...so it IS near where the console freeplay/tourney area was the FIRST YEAR('04).

If I remember correctly, on the map you have there, the Console Tourney area was the Console Freeplay/Tourney. The PC Freeplay area was still the PC freeplay. The Console Freeplay was the BYOC area and the BYOC area there was the Expo room.

    :P

The tabletop area was on the bottom floor in '04.

    The rooms are connected.

Sure, you have to walk around to get into them, but if they wanted, they could open up the walls.

    I'd say that's near enough...geez... :P

Yeah, I'll just see how things work out. I assume there will be enough consoles and TVs already set up, enough people have brought them each year? I can probably bring my PS2, but there's no way I can lug a TV along with me. I'll definately be bringing Third Strike and MvC2 along with me (PS2 both), and perhaps Metal Slug X. Hopefully I can find someone who has more than a mild attraction to Third Strike, I've never gotten a chance to play against anyone before, and I'll spend the next week preparing for PAX.

I don't think anybody expects you to bring a TV or a PS2. There'll be enough. Of course, if you want to have your own private stuff... then I don't see any problems.

Oh, and to BigRed, regarding your floor plan there, do you know where any DDR machines might be set up?

I think you're putting way too much "Thought" into this...

Show up, walk around, enjoy yourself. The more you relax and take it all in, the more fun you'll have. If you spend the whole weekend stressing out about your exact gameplan and where you're going to be when, It'll be over before you know it and you'll be disappointed.

Just show up and have a bitchin' time.

There is no way you would be able to walk from one far side to the other without going into the hallway.
The walls are all opened, but the sections of smaller rooms (consoel freeplay, byoc, console tournament) arnet connected to each other.

the best heads-up I could give is to be prepared for a lot of games, a lot of geeks, and a lot of cool shit to check out. I had no idea what to expect, and frankly, I think that's part of the magic that has become PAX. Crazy parties, awesome entertainment, meeting a ton of cool new people-- it's pretty stocked. If you want to play games, just go do it. Everything is available to enjoy, so give'R hard on whatever you enjoy the most.

That's my summary from last my experience last year, and it's going to be a whole lot bigger this year.
