Dude I just had an idea! (PAX Crane games for Child's Play)
Okay so I'm a fan of the crane games, you know them. The games where you operate a crane in the hopes of grabbing some stuffed toy, or better yet some weird random thing. Well why not bring them to PAX?
Just set up three machines, have the companies who are attending fill them with swag, and all the money they make (50 cents a game) goes to the Child's Play foundation.
It's simple, fun (unless you suck at crane machines), and goes to a good cause. A triple threat yo.
Not a bad idea but it would be better if you could somehow get good prizes like DS games and stuff and make it $5 a pop. I would gladly drop $20 for 4 tries if A) I might win a free game and it was going to charity.
Well maybe one 50 cent machine which has just small stupid little things/candy, three $1 machines which would have larger items/t-shirts, then five $5 games with crazy awesome stuff like DS games... maybe even a DS or two.

Man, I first read this and though you were talking about this. Now I'm all disappointed.
-There would have to be a semi-dedicated staffer for it since the stock of items would deplete so fast.
-Would need enough stuff to last the whole of the event. Or have a set amount of stuff set aside for each day.
-Might run into prize providing companies wanting branding on the machines and if not, they won't participate. Maybe along with whatever sign will be there stating the charity, there can be something listing the providers all together.
-PAX branded stuff would probably be the easiest to get but they're selling merch in the expo so what would they want to contribute that wouldn't take away from those sales?
Just some logistical things to think about. Can't think of anything else right now. Tis a good idea.
um... where will you be getting these machines from?
and also, i think since everyone that's replyed on the thread so far have been supportive, you should take this directly to the PAX guys. they can probably get in contact with donar-like complanies much more easily that a regular joe like you and me.
If this could be pulled off, it would be great! I'm 100% in support of this. Whatever we can throw to Child's Play would be awesome. Indeed, I don't know where we'd get the crane machines from, but I'm sure someone has to know someone who does that kind of thing. Anyone know someone?

Alright so I just called up the Seattle branch of Mountain Coin about if they would do rentals, and while they said they don't. They did give me the name and number of a company that would. So I'll pass that along to Robert Khoo to see what you thinks.
Dude this is the second time I've been shoehorned into doing something like this... it's starting to get a little ri-goddamn-diculous. Not that I'm complaining... I like getting my hands dirty on stuff like this.
I know my roommate, for one, is nuts about crane machines and would probably be way down with something like this. Everytime we see one and one of us has change, he gives them a whirl.

You would need 3-4 machines to really get things moving and all the toys to put inside of it. I do endorse this idea but the convention center might get fussy and want their cut. I hope they don't charge us tax for coin-op stuff like this.

again, i say, take it to the Official PAX guys. They already know what can and can't happen in the convention center, and they have the resources to get in contact with the distributors companies for prizes and get things in the door.
Hey sorry for the late response guys - I love the idea, but the big issue is that planning for layouts etc. happened a few months ago, and since those plans got submitted to the fire marshal back then, there's not a lot we can do to add things. We'll definitely keep this on the whiteboard for 2009 though!
Haven't gotten a response yet. And since he has to go though about 32 pages of sign submissions (And hopefully pick one of mine...) it's not really all that surprising.
Edit: Oh well, se-la-vi. Hopfully it'll be in PAX 09.

So does anyone remember last years PAX banners? What were the chosen phrases?
Well, for 2009, one potential source of Crane Games is Gameworks - they've got a whole slew of Sega UFO Catchers. Of course, *they* charge like $2 per play...

As cool as it would be to have this in support of Child's Play, PRD has already stated in the PAX Charity Poker thread that PAX and CP have to be kept as separate as possible. I'm not sure of the exact technicalities, but I think this would probably fall into the same category, despite being as awesome an idea as it is. I had the idea that Prize Redemption should be able to take point=cash donations for things on Sunday once all the tournaments are over, but this idea was also not approved.

What about a full arcade? rent some awesome arcade machines and prize cranes and have them set to 25/50 cents and have the proceeds go to the Childs play charity? Or some sort of event at gameworks for childs play?
Although everyone has great ideas, I think it's too close to PAX to really throw something together as I bet most floorspace has been allocated already.
