Some people are treating it like a joke, the officers, who are friends with this guy - "Stop looking at porn sites lolol", but it pisses me off that a guy who in charge of a FUCKING RAIDING GUILD wasn't more careful. Don't go to questionable sites, use a better password?

Personally, I think it's hilarious - it couldn't happen to a nicer guy (/sarcasm), but it fucked over the guild.

I hate to tell you this but we've moved on from the "You can only catch viruses from seeing shady sites" period of computing. The recent flash vulnerability combined with the ad-servers for a number of major wow sites getting compromised at various points really kills that theory dead.

Ah, OK. But he could've moved the character with access to the guild bank to another account. I knew someone who did that, just to keep guild stuff off of his own account. He only gave two other officers access - back when we did not have guild banks. Or not shared his account info with other people (which is the other cause of "OMG I got hacked" & how many people did you share it with...?).

I guess there's a lot of this hacking going around, one of other officers got hacked a third time. Or was it fourth, I lost track.

You could if your anti-virus application develops a magical method of find and preventing infections before the vulnerability is announced. The Flash exploit was a zero-day. And almost all anti-virus apps work like shit.

A GM can't lock themselves out of the guild bank. As long as a GM exists for a guild, there will always be one character with access to the guild bank at all times. But are you seriously suggesting that splitting his account would have magically prevented the compromise? Because some how the hacker involved was just going to go "Hey look there are two accounts worth of logins being sent to me. Hey, I'll be nice and throw one away".

Could be worse, in another online game I play it was in fact a very useful addon that the guilds used that contained the logger, quite a few guild leaders had hacked accounts. And when that happened they didn't get their stuff back either.

    Amazingly fucking stupid:

We got a raid ID from a guild that had killed RoS, to try and get an Illidan kill for reset. Raids have been slow due to normal crap + summer-time jobs and such. We had to go kill Gorefiend AND Bloodboil, due to the guild that gave us the ID having spent extra time to down RoS. We got it all done, had some silly stuff on Bloodboil, but got to Illidan in decent time.

We're old hat @ the fight, and we actually did our best P2 that anyone could remember. Flawless and beautiful.

36%. Main Tank D/Cs. Raid wipe.

    Next attempt.

55%. Demon Phase Warlock tank D/Cs. Raid wipe.

This proceeded to continue for the next 2-3 attempts. It got to the point where the MT and the Warlock tank were D/Cing in tandem with eachother. One lives Central Timezone, and the other lives EST outside Philli. We specced another Warlock to do it, but had no one that could replace the MT for Illidan himself.

THE ENTIRE NIGHT, connections were golden.

Illidan will now rot to reset. Thanks Blizz, give our guild ANOTHER kick in the balls.

Somewhat happy: New Hunter and Priest that we recruited picked up a couple decent upgrades.

Not sure if the device was bested so much as a blizz employee at a call in center was tricked. Can't remember what the cause was, either way you can search for it and find out at http://www.massively.com/

Either way, the point is no matter what precautions you take bad things can still happen.

I mean....come on....most security programs are suppose to be hack proof and all that.....I'm sure we've heard stories before that claimed to be as such. In the end how many are.

It looks like the issue was on the call center end. But a couple of the "investigative" tests that some of the other blogs did seem to indicate that Blizzard requires the CD-Key to do a deactivation. Which isn't something that works well with random guesses.

There seem to be some holes in this story, so I wouldn't start a panic yet.

Happy: Did my first Kara on my Warlock in like 2 months since people have been wanting my warrior to tank/off tank.

Hate:Server down time is during my main playing time. Also though I do insane damage, being a shadowbolt turret is still boring as sin.

Hope: WotlK makes 'locks more than X-turrets so that we can do many different things while in a raid. My fingures are still crossed that affliction will not just be viable but useful in raids. With CoX(Whatever the assignment is), siphon life, unstable affliction and haunt to rotate while still shadow bolting it looks like a busy but fun spec.

Happy: My paladin is now at 34. I made the switch from ret to prot at 33, and tanked the Library with few issues except for accidentally wiping on the first hallway (at which point I remembered Judgement of Justice prevents runners), and dying on Loksey after the healer OOMed, but not before we took down Loksey, one of his dogs, and had the other two at 20% for the remaining people to clean up (at which point I realized I probably could have judged light at the start of the fight and survived). Other than having to drink after every third pull or so, it was good fun (and being the one to tell the DPS that they weren't getting anything but salv so STFU was refreshing). Then I got to try out some AoE grinding at the Dabyrie Farmstead, and pumped my fist every time a runner took off and came back with two more friends. I could get used to doing that.

Annoyed: This paladin is on Blackrock (where my coworkers play) instead of Emerald Dream (where I've been mostly playing and where all my Horde 70s are), so I really don't have any sort of support network other than Herbalism to keep me in Eagle mail and shield spikes. And when those coworkers eventually "quit" the game again, it's gonna be another 25 bux to move him over to ED.

Amused: Daily BG yesterday was EotS, so I queue up on the mage. Once the battleground starts, I head straight to BE to hold the fort. I see a rogue head towards us from DR, but she stealths and just seems to lurk around. A Demo warlock then shows up and heads straight into the middle with his felguard and pops the voodoo gnome trinket (so at this point, since I have enemy lifebars up, I'm seeing all sorts of red bars all over my screen).

I start unloading into him along with the other two defenders, Cone of Cold, Frost novas, Ice Lance spam, etc figuring if I get him down the rest of the lifebars go away. When the dust settles not only is the warlock dead, but there's a dead night elf in the mix as well. I see I didn't get the KB on the warlock, but the battleground score shows I have a killing blow to my name, so I check my combat log and I somehow killed the rogue without even realizing she was there

You would be surprised at how young some of the people actually logged into WoW are. I know of at least one 2 year old who can turn on a computer and double click on a Shortcut, could be that mommy or daddy are using WoW as a babysitter instead of television.

How the hell can someone not know what a vowel is? How did they manage to turn on a computer, install WoW, make an account, and log in? Did they manage to get a monitor that beams stupidity into their otherwise normal brain?

    err possibly not knowing english?

You would be surprised at how young some of the people actually logged into WoW are. I know of at least one 2 year old who can turn on a computer and double click on a Shortcut, could be that mommy or daddy are using WoW as a babysitter instead of television.

My supervisor had a five-ish year old son who adored fishing in game. He had no interest in doing anything in game but fishing and cooking. And sometimes alchemy if the mats where on hand. So my supervisor would let him fish for 20 mins each night and cook up what he caught.

Then again the bastard figured out how to do one better then botting. The older teens were given 50 cents for each WSG/AB mark they got for his toon.

That brings to mind that PA where Gabe has purchased a farmer to play WoW for him.
