What are Nintendo and Microsoft bringing?

Dark ForteDark Forte Registered User regular
edited August 2006 in PAX Archive
Being new to PAX, I have no idea what either of these companies is going to offer at the con. Will there be any hands on for unreleased products such as the Wii or Xbox Live Vision? Will they just show these things without handson, or will the Wii be absent from the con all together? So what exactly can I expect from Microsoft and Nintendo?

I'm sure Microsoft will show off Vision and a whole load of new games. As far as the Wii goes, I'm not counting on it, but I reallllly want it to be there.

I'd say its 50/50. But why Wouldn't they bring it is my question to you. The rumor mill said that the WII-remote was running on gamecube hardware at E3. Ya know, If thats all thats there is the WII-remote and a usable demo thats fine too.

I've heard plenty of people talk about how good the remote is and I want to touch it for myself. If there's enough samples available and nintendo has a strong presence again this year, It would be foolish for them NOT to bring it.

    my 2cents though.

    #1 reason:

Security. They were able to do it at E3 becuase the demos were in closed booths. Pax is an open expo floor where its substantially more difficult for people to keep track of the remotes flying around.

If you people are so sure the wii is going to be there, take me up on that bet ;)

Plus, isn't the Leipzig Conference the same time as PAX?

Expect the Nintendo big-wigs to be much more focused on that then they are about PAX.

They wernt tethered at E3, but you were in a confined demo booth anyway.

I dont even know if nintendo has any retail wii demo stations or not..

Still waiting for someone to accept that bet...

As far as Microsoft is concerned, they might even show off DirectX 10. It's a long shot, but it'd be pretty sweet to get to see different stuff in a simulated DX10 environment.

I thought Rankenphile's implication was that geeks might have upper body strength in just one arm. Like maybe the joystick arm. But most games require you to mash buttons too... or mouse+keyboard... either way, using both arms. So I was just wondering why, if geeks could have one arm be strong, why they might not be strong in both?

Plus, it let me make a masturbation joke. That's worth some assumptions and potential mangling of intent.

I suppose it won't hurt to say this since the expo is so close, so here goes:

A few months a go, I was at work (Gamestop) and a gentleman by the name of Robert Khoo walked in. I, having attended PAX 04 and 05, recognized him immediately and freaked a little on the inside (I stayed cool outwardly though.... maybe...). Anyway, I asked him if I could help him find anything and he wondered if we had any Xbox 360's. I asked him if they were for PAX, and he looked at me, somewhat taken aback, and asked me if I knew who he was. I responded affirmative, as did he. Long story short, I set him up with a 360. While the transaction was occuring, I casually asked him if there was anything he could tell me about PAX like, "if the Wii will be there, heh." To my surprise and joy, he actually responded with a "Yes" to my half-joking question/suggestion/thing. He also mentioned that it was not going to be announced or anything. I... about... died with glee. True story. I have his business card to prove to myself it wasn't a hallucination.

So. That's my tale. According to Robert a few months ago, the Wii will indeed be available at PAX in some capacity. I'm not sure if it will be playable, but I'm willing to bet that Nintendo will certainly be bringing a good deal of its E3 presence this year, as the Nintendo booth was easily the largest one there last year.

Heh. I registered a forum account just to tell you guys that. That's all I got. PM me for a picof Robert's Business card if you need proof. If not, I'll see you at the Meydenbauer!

This is all an elaborate ruse to make us think the wii might not be there :P

I would put the odds at 75/25 now in favor of it being there. Bigred's concern is valid though. Security for the nintendo booth will be challenging. I would make the point that its close enough to launch and they are doing that tour to demo the WII.

A question, What is the showcase speedrun? Does that have anything to do with the exhibition area?
