As someone who has been running the Weekly Release Thread for approximately a full year now, I can say with strong confidence that the PSP has seen the fewest releases regularly over the year, and I can say with absolute confidence that the PSP has not only seen a significant, sheer drop in software releases and support, especially recently, but I can also say that of all the current gen consoles and handhelds, overall software releases for the PSP are by far the slimmest.

Interestingly and unsurprisingly, when threads like these pop up, and PSP recommendation threads, most recommendations for the system break down like this: Most retail recommendations are for games that were released before 2008. The other recommendations revolve around modding the system to use it for other purposes not specifically detailed so as not to break forum rules.

That's not to say that the PSP hasn't had any good 2008 releases, but it's just that each year, the pickings get slimmer and slimmer, and progressively reliant on Sony releases and Square-Enix support. This is in stark contrast to most current gen consoles as the NDS, where on each platform, the releases are increasing, and third party support is increasing. So while Sony will provide some good ones, even this year with GoW:COO or Patapon, releases like this are very few and often month(s) between.
I wanted to thank you for posting this information. It was very insightful and contained good information. I'm going to buy a DS or PSP tomorrow, not sure which yet, but you sure have helped me to making the right decision.
Slash keeps track of a lot of things around here. Whichever system you get you should ask him for his "list," a list of games that most people on this forum have enjoyed on each console. That is, unless you already know what you'd want.

    OK.

Approximately 59 PSP games were released in 2008 in the USA.

About 180 NDS games were released in 2008 in the USA, removing repeats like dual pokemon releases etc.

    That's 4.9 PSP games a month, and 15 NDS games a month.

About 20 PSP games from 2008 are good, 25 if you take the best sports games too (rounding up).

About 45 or so NDS games from 2008 are good, rounding down, but perhaps a few more (50 or so) depending on your feeling towards certain genres (like Roguelikes and Adventure games) and not including any sports games

That's roughly 2 good PSP games a month, and roughly 3.75 good NDS games a month.

And by "good" i mean based on general forum opinion that I've seen within each recommendation thread we have.

About 411 total PSP games have been released over the course of 45 months, or roughly 9.1 games per month, or 109.6 games a year.

About 573 total NDS games have been released over the course of 49 months or so, or roughly 11.6 games per month, or 140 games a year.

The NDS has seen an upward trend in releases, as you can see that this year they have been way above the average (from 140 to 180). The PSP has seen a decline in recent years, as it has gone down from its overall average (from 109 to 59 - almost half).

The most very striking thing to observe has been in the last year, though, 2008, where PSP software releases (and announcements) have dropped significantly, whereas NDS releases went up real fast 2 or 3 years ago, and then have been steadily increasing, thus the NDS current year is much higher than its overall average, as more games are planned for and released on it.

Approximately 14 PSP announced games have release dates for the first half of 2009 as of this writing, whereas about 71 announced NDS games have release dates for the first half of 2009 as of this writing.

My PSP is kind of my GameCube; it doesn't have nearly as many releases as I'd like, but the ones I have, joined together, are more than worth the cost of entry. Particularly for someone who games a lot on the go and loves having a more powerful "traditional" handheld machine. I have both systems and they're both pretty rad. The DS is about 20 shades of rad; the PSP is maybe five or six shades, but those colors are really awesome colors that the DS is incapable of rendering.

I'll agree that the PSP's future is looking pretty meager, though. The most recent game I bought for it was Crisis Core, I think; everything else is prior to 2008, I believe (was N+ 2008?). I will check out Loco Roco 2, though I never played the original; and I'm not going to buy Patapon 2 until I actually put in enough time to beat the original, which is wonderful.

The PSP really needs to push more in the digital download space, IMO -- I bought both Super Stardust Portable and Everyday Shooter, and they're amazing fucking games for 10 bones each. I know that they're going to push the PSP Store more in the future, but this is where any future for the handheld lies. I know the sole reason I installed a custom firm is to be able to run all my UMD-based games off of the stick for increased battery life and loading times.

I agree, with this, the DS has great software but its really weak in the hardware department. A lot of cell phones nowadays have more cpu/graphical power than the DS so the psp fills this void nicely, but I can see the writing on the wall and realize the games are drying up for it. This is why I was so dispointed by the DSi (I'll probably still get it since I'm a consumer whore). Fucking nintendo is always so damn stingy with their hardware specs. Couldn't they have at least matched the power/screen of the psp? wtf.

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

You expect them to up the resolution and graphical power in what is primarily a revision/redesign? You might as well ask Sony why the PSP's third revision didn't bring it up to PS3 level graphics.

The PSP matching/exceeding comes in the actual next generation. Handheld generations have always been much longer than others which I am glad for, there is always one system that you don't have to buy new every four years.

First, its impossible to have ps3 level graphics in a psp, duh, its very possible to have psp level graphics in a DS. Also the psp changes were rather minor, they don't even bother renaming it. (They are all psps) The DSi however is significantly different in some areas but not others. I would rather get rid off the cameras and ACC playback (cheap fuckers can't pay mp3 license) and have a bigger or higher resolution screen with better colors.

It makes me wonder when we'll really get the honest-to-god next generation of handhelds; the PSP-3000 just came out last fall, the DSi is slated for sometime this year in the West and, IIRC, there were rumors of another incremental PSP upgrade sometime for this year. Both systems have been out for a fairly long time (coming up on four years now, right?), but I don't see anything major coming for another two years or so.

I'm not sold on a DSi yet, but if the whole download-store aspect really blossoms, once I can find the thing without selling a kidney, I'll be there with bells on and sell off my DS Lite. (I knew there was a reason I kept my GB Micro in a drawer!)

I'm not really sold on the DSi either. But my kids are getting old enough now that they kind of hog my DS and they'll probably break it eventually, so I'll probably get it once you can find them in stores. (Right now the only game they play is "Smart Kids" a preschool thing both my 5 year old twins and 3 year old really like it)

The DSi does have a slightly bigger screen. Same resolution though.

I really like the SD card slot and Virtual Console downloads for it. That will be what convinces me to get one. A good deal from Gamestop or something would help as well. I only got a Lite because they had a trade-in deal on the Phat.

I've bought three, but two were just original models as presents for my sisters. I just have my launch one still.

I'm serious about not having to buy a new one; all incremental upgrades have commonly been optional which is nice. If an entirely new thing comes out then games start to dry up on the old one and you have to get the new system to keep playing new games.

How do you know it's possible to have PSP graphics in a DS? It's harder to engineer these things than you think. It has to remain backwards compatible; if the jump forward is too much then you need to include all the old hardware in the same package (see GBA support on the DS). If you don't care about backwards compatibility, well, then you've got something totally new and we're not quite to that point yet. It'd be much more expensive in both R&D and for the end consumer. It's just something that is not done in revisions. To date I think the only "revision" that improved the processor/colors was the Gameboy Color, and even that was a minor upgrade and didn't fly that well (GBC games being incompatible with old hardware).

I mean, I guess you can want that if you want, it's just really unrealistic. It's like a Wii "revision" that puts it at 360 power. Is that even a revision at that point? It'd be so significant that you'd have to call it the next generation. And as I said, it's like expecting a similar boost in PSP graphics without moving into a new gen, which is equally unlikely.

Meanwhile the DSi's changes are essentially addons; it doesn't have enough external ports for the things they wanted to add, so it's a full revision instead. They didn't set out to change the graphics at all, as it's clear the population at large is satisfied with the DS's existing capabilities.

Virtual Console downloads haven't been confirmed—this is solely Internet conjecture at this point, isn't it? Unless you mean the DSi Ware store, but that's separate from VC. (VC compatibility would probably force my hand into a Day 1 purchase.)

The DSi is not the next generation Nintendo handheld. It's a mere revision of the current generation handheld. Yes, it has support for downloads, yes it has a camera. But to say that the DSi is the new Nintendo handheld would have been like saying that the GBA-SP was a new generational launch for the GBA.

It's just a Nintendo DS redesign. It's not a new system, they're not adding CPU/graphical power for that reason. It's an NDS that will play NDS games. And the Camera/memory? Consider them built-in peripherals, because that's what they amount to. And that so-called "DSi Software" they've alluded to? It's just DS software that takes advantage of these built-in peripherals. The primary market for software on the Nintendo side is going to be "DS Software." Because that's what the DS and DSi are - Nintendo DSs.

I honestly think the DSi is what it is because they couldn't figure out how to attach a plastic wheel or balance board to it.

Just to add my 2 cents, it really depends on the type of games you are into. If you like 3d platforming, go PSP - the DS really doesn't do them that well. Additionally, if you like sports or racing titles, definitely go PSP as the DS severely lacks good realistic sports/racing games. For everything else, I really prefer the DS.

My personal genre lately has been strategy stuff and the DS is AMAZING for those. Advance Wars (x2), Age of Empires (x2), Civ, Battles of Prince of Persia, Drone Tactics, Disgaea, Lock's Quest, etc. The DS is a strategy gamer's wet dream.

How much interest was bearing on that two cents, since it should have been deposited back in July 2008? :P
