I tried to copy the article but this work computer is jacked. I had to type the web address for the link by hand!
June Numbers:
PS3 sales increased 94 percent to 405,500. 208,700 were sold in May.
Wii sales decreased from 660,000 to 675,100
360 sales increased 17% to 217,800
The article attributes much of the increase to MGS4. Although the Wii and 360 have the top selling games Sony likely sold a large quantity of systems (release was slated June 12) in 80gb MGS4 bundles.
Does anyone think these sales (May levels) will be sustained? or will July/August's figures be exceptionally low? Most iWhat new games are coming out that could possibly drive console fandom more than MGS4? Personally I always ask myself when I buy a game...would I buy the rig to play just this game? Wierd I know. But I bought my PS 1 because of FFVII :P
edit:
I also wanted to add a poll on what system or "other" people spent their stimulus on. "other" for me. To much school debt still! Oh yeah...I couldn't figure out how to add a poll.
I was pretty tempted to get a new PC (on AGP vid card now, so when I upgrade next it'll be a big all-at-once kinda deal), but in the end tuition and food cost too much of my income.
Was going to buy a Wii, but they weren't in stock and I ended up spending it on another fish tank first. Girlfriend was displeased - "five of anything is already too many" yet she has twenty purses and was actually eager for me to buy a tenth video game system.

Technically that money was "earmarked" for the MGS PS3, but I would have bought it regardless. Just icing on the cake really.

I, uh, fixed my car with my stimulus check, I suppose.
The only console that's been on my radar for awhile is the PSP, and possibly selling my old DS to pay for a DS Lite. I can't really justify the PSP purchase because pretty much only want FF:Tactics, though.
I got a 360 and an HDTV last month, but it was pretty much unrelated to the stimulus check. Not that it didn't help, but I would've bought those things anyway. It was time. The extra money certainly helped out, though.
In answer to the Title question, I was very tempted to buy another console with my stimulus check, but instead decided to buy a GPS navigation system. Anyway....
Does anyone think these sales (May levels) will be sustained? or will July/August's figures be exceptionally low?
It's impossible to discern the future perfectly, or else we'd all be millionaires. So what we can do is look at the data we have and speculate.
So will these May/June numbers be sustained in July?
Well, it depends on a lot of factors. In past years, the 360 has usually gone up from May to June the back down in July. The PS3 in 07 went up all three months in a row. The Wii sales were essentially supply constrained, and so depended on shipment and production levels, but for most of the year of 07 Wii sales just shot continuously straight up, going up up up to 425k in July 07 and up up up to 1.35M in December; it only went down 3 times in the year, and never pulled less than 259k for a month during a slow month (Mar 07; 360 at 199k and PS3 at 130k at the time).
The Wii broke a sales record held by the PS2 about two months ago; it sold over 700k units in a nonholiday month, a record held by the PS2 since 2002 (shortly thereafter the NDS smashed this record in June by selling 783k units in the month). However, the Wii has since then been holding at around mid-600k levels; extremely impressive numbers, but not 700k+ numbers as before. Is it supply constraint, or did Nintendo deliver on the promise to ship more units specifically for Wii Fit, which launched in May? Or is it a combination of both? I think Nintendo brought more systems to the US for Fit's launch, and has since relegated some of that mega supply to Europe and Japan (after all, the US Dollar isn't very strong right now). Even so, Nintendo ships 40% of its Wii supply to the US every month.
So yes, I would expect the Wii to maintain about a mid-600k level sales rate next month. April/May months recieved larger shipments and sales were larger as a result. Months thereafter things were leveled off a bit and it shows; but sales are still at about 40% of production, meaning Wiis are very nearly still selling out even in non-holiday months. So expect >600k Wii sales in July.
The 360? Been a very steady seller without much change except when Halo and arguably Gears of War came out, but even then, it is hard to say how much a single game impacts sales during crazy holiday months. That said, the 360 really kind of hovers around 200k to mid-200ks during non holiday months and then shoots way up in november like most systems historically do. And while the 360 is receiving this $300 clearance to make room for new systems, it's not exactly an actual price drop overall, and may only affect a small number of people. I expect the 360 to maintain its sales in the low to mid 200k's for July simply because I don't think many people will realize that a $300 is available, and even then, it's only for a short while.. Furthermore, there isn't any huge system pushing game, to my knowledge, coming out in July. The biggest games are Soul Cal IV and Madden. The 360 hasn't seen much hardware boosts due to Madden except when it came with a simultaneous price break; otherwise, the 360 just sells shit-tons of copies of maddens, but the HW sales don't much budge.
Finally, the PS3. This machine sold terribly until it finally hit the $400 price point, at which time it started to slowly crawl its way up to equalling the 360's monthly sales rates. When GTAIV came out, neither the 360 nor the PS3 saw sales bumps. Until MGS4, there hasn't been a game that pushed PS3 sales, exclusive or not, "playstation franchise" or not. Nothing caused it to really budge. Until MGS4. Finally, the PS3 saw a significant bump in every major region. In the US, sales of PS3s went from 208k to 405k. Definitely a result of several things - one, MGS4 has been the poster child of the Playstation 3 since before it's launch. To say that this game has been hyped would be an understatement. To underscore how valuable an exclusive this is, Sony repackaged PS3s with a DS3, MGS4, and sold it as a bundle for $500, and marketed the hell out of the thing. I think it's pretty clear that a lot of MGS fans were on the fence, waiting for MGS4 to come out, before shelling out over $400 for a console. But like most system selling exclusive games - Halo, Gears of War, you name it - these releases tend to cause a noticeable bump in system sales for the month of release as people rush out to buy the console+game, and then the numbers level off. In japan, PS3 weekly sales went from 75k to 20k to 18k to 14k, at which point it had returned to pre-MGS4 release sales. MGS4 brought the PS3 to 75k for the week, and it took less than a month to return to normal. Still a great month for PS3 in Japan, but it's fairly clear that in Japan, console sales based on singular exclusive console pushing games is very frontloaded. Likewise in the USA, sales of the 360 shot up for Halo 3, then went straight back down to normal numbers the next month. Sales of many huge games, with few exceptions, rarely stick around in top spots for long. GTAIV didn't even reach the top ten sales charts this month, as an example.
So I expect the PS3 sales to go down next month. Probably to numbers above the 360, since it had just barely pulled that off in prior months, and people will still be buying the system or MGS4 bundle. Just don't expect it to be 400k numbers in July. Probably just a tad above 360 numbers; so if the 360 pulls 220k, I expect something between 220k and 300k for the PS3.
Most iWhat new games are coming out that could possibly drive console fandom more than MGS4? Personally I always ask myself when I buy a game...would I buy the rig to play just this game? Wierd I know. But I bought my PS 1 because of FFVII :P
What could drive system sales more than MGS4? Hardly anything has as much of a hype train as MGS4 did. The only ones with equal or more hype have/are multiplatform. For a system selling exclusive, I'm not sure anything has been quite the poster boy for so many years as MGS4 has been for the PS3. The 360 had Halo 3, and that sold a lot of systems for one month and then went back down. I expect a similar effect for the PS3 with MGS4. But I don't see much of anything having that 2+ year PS3 hype momentum and system-bundled Sony backed hype train that MGS4 had. Not Killzone, not Resistance 2, not LBP. Although the next closest thing will probably be Resistance 2, it certainly isn't getting the hype that major games like MGS4 or Halo 3 have had.
What seems to cause system sales to rise and stay at a certain higher point have been price breaks. Particularly at certain levels. I think $200k was the point at which the PS2 truly took off. And nobody is disputing that the Wii is doing anything less than stellar at $250.
Cost of Entry is key. System sellers will only push so many consoles as there are fans of the game, which tend to buy the game immediately and then sales go back down. Price drops help push consoles regardless of taste in games or hype behind specific games. Everyone, not specific people, benefit from price drops.

I have some friends that do that. I've considered it. Maybe I'll give it a shot now that I have a pretty sophisticated GPS. Although I use the GPS mostly for navigating in my car.

I actually bought my 360 with my stimulus check. An Elite so no RROD for me, although I don't have Live access. So the check realistically paid for about half my 360.
Still totally worth it, though.

I justified buying a PSP just for Tactics. I came for the Tactics, and stayed for the Monster Hunter.
Considering picking up a 360 with my stimulus check. The horrors of red rings keeps me weary though. Maybe I'll just soup up my comp for the advent of Spore.
No, but then again I didn't get a stimulus check. Unemployed college student ftw. That being said, I still upgraded to a DS lite. I figured I might as well take advantage of the GameStop trade-up offer since I could get about as much online for my SP as they were offering. I still have my phat, which ought to make up some of the difference once I find someone to off it onto. And even if I don't, I'd still say it was worth it. I can actually play my DS games when the sun is bright now that I can bump the brightness way up.
...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

We bought a PS3 (the MGS bundle), but then that wasn't just because of the stimulus check, but also because of Wal-Mart's gift card deal.

"Wii sales decreased from 660,000 to 675,100" o_O that doesn't even make sense.
And the 360 sales increase is really just ho-hum.
I don't think it had anything to do with the stimulus checks. Most people probably just bought groceries. Or gas.
