the fine art of action figure hunting

I'm not much of a collector, so I have no idea how the hunt really works. I'm looking for a specific figure as a gift to a friend but I'm not quite sure how to start looking (aside from ebay, amazon, google).

i've come across a number of sites with varying prices (each more outrageous than the next) and there seems to be no real consistency.

i'm not sure what sort of stores physically stock models like that. should i look around local comic book stores or hunt around some of the larger franchises like KB toys/toys r us? i'm situated in NYC if that's of any help when it comes to local retailers
