Hey guys, I just had a quick question regarding the Hyundai Tiburon. I've been watching the auto trader site for the last couple months or so since I've been looking for a car and one thing that I see the most of is the Tiburon. Now this would normally lead me to believe that the car has some flaws if people are generally trying to get rid of them in the 6-7k range but at the same time these cars are typically in the 70 and 80k mile range. This is making me feel a little conflicted. Any personal input on the car would be a pretty big help.
Thanks

Hyundais have a fairly bad reputation, a lot of which is undeserved.
Whilst it is true that in the early to mid nineties they were unrequitable pieces of shit, nowadays they are easily the best built Korean car out there, and by a large margin. They are still built down to a price, but then so is every car you buy today, unless we're talking real exotic pieces of machinery.
If you're talking about the model I think you're talking about, it comes with the 2.7 V6 out of the Sonata. As long as the particular car you end up purchasing has a good service history and checks out (get the AAA to inspect any car you like before you take it for a test drive!), there's no reason you won't get years of enjoyable motoring from it.
They actually get quite favourable reviews compared to things like Toyota Celicas and Honda Integras.
From the friends I have that own them I've heard there are a few major problems with them, but overall they're pretty decent cars. I've heard of problems with the sunroof getting stuck in any position between open and closed, problems with the HVAC systems and window regulator issues. The only complaint about the car aside from those that I've heard from my friends is that it's not nearly as sporty as it looks. I've also heard that the service side of most hyundai dealers is pretty poor.
Be sure and check out sites like Edmunds, which give decent reviews of cars.

Well obviously it's not going to be as fast in a straight line as a Corvette! The engine is half the size after all...
If there are endemic problems with the HVAC and window regulators, that seems like a warranty problem that would have been sorted on a well-maintained example.
Don't get a sunroof. Sunroofs are for gay European hairdressers and middle-aged men.
Hmm well thanks for the quick responses guys. Maybe I should consider looking into one since they are pretty cheap. Anything is gonna be better than this clunker I've got now

Ask around and see if someone you know has a Carfax membership, or get one yourself. It's well worth it.
They're a nice looking car, they have acceptable power for most people, and Hyundai's are better than most people give credit. I'd at least check it out. I nearly bought one a few years ago, in fact.
One thing to keep in mind is how tall you are, because i found them a bit of a tight fit which ultimately swayed my decision. The one i was looking at had a sunroof, which does cut into the headroom a bit as well though. I'm only 6' tall. I cant recall what the rear visibility was, either. I remembered at the time looking at a few cars, and at least two of them had rear visibility problems. One was the RX-8, and i cant remember which the other was. Check that out as well, in the long term its a pain in the ass to not have good visibility when daily driving.

Good luck!
